Generic toner is rather expensive at £40 a pop for an up to 1,600 pages (@ 5% coverage) cartridge. linky

This printer is probably suitable for those who print occasionally, may be 30 odd pages a months. If you are likely to do more than that do yourself a favour and look for something more economical.

Agreed, with any printer, laser or jet, it depends on the price of generic toner/ink

Unless the printer is special in some way, this one seems fairly versatile, ethernet wi-fi and usb and supports most operating systems, doesn`t do dulplex or multiple copies

Why? Will it explode if you print 31 pages a month or 40 or 50? Have you seen the duty cycle?

According to HP the maximum monthly duty cycle for this printer is ~ 10,000 pages.

However keep in mind that the imaging drum in this thing has an approximate life span of only about 12,000 pages. Hence you would likely have to swap it every 45days or so at a cost of £60 a piece.

This printer is ideally suited for someone who wants to print the occasional airline ticket and make the odd photo copy. Since it uses dry toner there is no ink that can dry out from it being used infrequently. There is a fair chance that in this scenario the printer would be good to use for the next 3 years, without one ever having to buy a new toner cartridge for it. When it eventually does run out you would just go out and buy a new printer, rather than a new cartridge.

It is literally a 'use and throw away' product IMO.

I hadn`t noticed that the drum was separate from the toner. Often nowadays the drum is integrated with the toner. It should mean the toner cheaper, not apparently in this case.

Any model suggestions to keep an eye out for? That include AirPrint and other direct Wi-Fi printing options.

I was looking at Brother DCP-L2520DW, but I've not found one at as tempting a price.

I haven't seen any decently priced networked all-in-one laser printers in a while, unless you are looking for a colour laser that is.

e.g. Laserjet Pro MFP M377dw - £252 then claim £70 cashback to make it £182

It comes with a 2,300 pages (@ 5% coverage) black toner cartridge and 1,200 pages each for cyan, yellow and magenta in the box.

Generic XL replacement toners are 6,500 pages black and 5,000 pages each for cyan, magenta and yellow andcost just under £100 per set or < £30 for just a black cartridge on its own.

I installed 2 of the more expensive M477fdn versions at a customer 2 months ago and was very impressed by them. They are basically the equivalent to the super popular Officejet Pro 8710 / 8715 / 8720, but laser instead of inkjets.

Amazon compatible toner listings. Don't include chip, but meant to be able to transfer chip then clear toner empty message on printer to begin printing. Unless doesn't work with starter toner chip.
