argh , just bought a gen 8 for £125 after cahback, would it be worth cancelling and going for this?

how many drives can this fit , more than 4?

most notably it seems:
gen10 vs gen8
no ILO on gen 10
amd chip

It can hold 4 officially...
Think some beta testers in the US managed to slot an SSD or two on the side of the case or in the optical bay area.

This forum should have some comparison test results:

reading the threads regarding this i dont think itll be worth changing, the case does look sleek though but the chip is soldered on and DDR4 ECC is super expensive plus theres not much elsse thats good, extra PCie slot i guess. happy with my gen8 to be delivered soon thankfully.
No iLo and soldered CPU, might as well go Gen8 - They seem to have targeted this one at home / media use (I certainly don't need 3 display ports on my server!) which is a shame
Can't believe they dropped iLo on these servers, such a convenient tool and one of my favourite features of a HP server.

Oh well will just have to buy a DL380 and see if I can adapt the server cab to fit in the bedroom wardrobe
I'm still running the N36L. It's on 24/7, running synology and doesn't miss a beat. I note that all other microservers have a higher TDP and so I'm likely saving a bit each year in energy.

It supports 4 3.5" drives in the drive bay. If you want to use an SSD you can fit one in the optical drive bay and use SATA port 5, but you'll need to buy the conversion kit or jury rig your own solution.

Does anyone know if the Performance Edition is substantially better or is it over priced for what it is?
ebuyer.com/796585
Could benchmark would suggest so. 2x the performance.
No ILO is a deal breaker.
Finally out in slight cheapness I really could do with this because the fan noise on my gen8 is so bad it lives in the loft and the 16gb ram limit in the gen8 is not good Esxi and 11 vms doesn't play well but how much would 32gb ddr4 be don't even want to check. I have a e3 1225 v2 in mine not sure how this would compare with that

It looks like the RAM included is not ECC? Is that correct? Shame if so.

According to ebuyer it is ECC.
Wow, no iLo and no Intelligent Provisioning. Clear statement being made here by HP.

The N54L was soldered on, it was an awesome machine.

You can get a free temp license for 2 months from the HP site, you can then re-use the same one again and again by just doing a factory reset on the iLo which only takes about 5 minutes to do.
The only real config you lose when doing the reset is iLo user accounts you set up. But the main admin account is always there.

If you're lucky and know someone who has paid for an iLo license or have access to a corporate server you can re-use their one.
Wish there was still a way to buy I'll for my gen7, I love it. I have 7 drives in it, totalling 35tb. But the ILO cards no longer exist.
I sold my synology 214play and I am looking for a replacement.

Is this a good replacement?

Mine too, in fact my N36L is still fully functional
Only just ordered a n54l, currently running a n40l which is struggling a little bit now with serving the whole house & being used with windows remotely all at the same time, want a gen8 but as it requires different ram that's not going to happen for a while
Gen10 sounds like a worse deal due to not being able to upgrade the processor
My Gen8 (Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2) out does this new model, so i'll stick with what I've got.

I too have a Gen 8 and upgraded to a Xeon E3-1220V2 with 16GB ram running Server 2016 4x2TB drives and an SSD for the OS. It is probably the one to buy as the prices will drop now so get them cheap and upgrade the CPU

Switch to Linux and it will serve the whole house without breaking sweat.
For the extra £40ish I'd prefer the ML10

The GEN10 in the chart is a different CPU to this one in the Deal, probably a more expensive model.
just had a look mine is the G7 40L got a asus GT610 in it should i stick or twist hmm
The Gen8 will have a considerable life left, especially if this Gen10 redesign represents HP's latest thoughts on the microserver.

Looking for a NAS server(XPEnology or freenas), cant decide which is better, gen8 or gen10? Out of the box gen10 cpu is more powerfull and it less power hungy. Also 8 gb of ram included. But for gen8 you can upgrade cpu, and ram is cheaper

I've got 4 x 3TB and a SSD with Server 2012 R2 on it and has been running 24/7 for years now with no issues so no need to upgrade and personally I think the GEN8 looks better cosmetically as well lol. Also when i got mine i got the free matching PS1810-8G switch with it as well.

Jammy on the PS1810-8G switch i bought one earlier this year for £100, crazy impulse buy but looks good sitting on top of the server Like yourself it runs 24/7 a great piece of kit, i only upgraded the CPU as i was putting server 2016 on and wanted a central data storage for all the kit.

Anyone know where to get ILO cards for an n54l?

The iLo cards for G7s are like gold dust. eBay is going to be your best chance and even then it's usually an international seller and the price is ridiculous.
I've been running an N40L for years as a download/storage box, streaming content to Plex on various devices.

It really struggles on some content when it has to transcode it and can't handle it.

Is the Gen10 significantly better? Or should I be looking at a more powerful machine?
