If I've got my calcs correct thats a possible £102.73 inc VAT delivered or pickup.

First post so be kind!

You know the specs by now etc. For those that are thinking of it we've put a ATI Radeon 5450 (about £25) in one of these with some extra RAM and they play full 1080p MKV's with no issues at all. Only BLURAY 50GB ISO's does it struggle a little.

Cashback ends 30th November 2012.

Up to 10 days delivery is free, just click it further down.

The deals just keep getting better for this! Colleague at work got one and seriously tempted myself now.
Bought one a few years back for about £150 after cashback. Excellent machines.

EDIT: Free delivery states 10 days. That may be cutting it a bit fine to get the cashback claim in. Probably fine but worth bearing in mind

Yeah, i'd love to see a raspberry Pi do what my N40L does. Raspberry Pi's are good for programming, but have their limits (_;)
I believe cashback is based on when you buy it, not get it delivered???

Great little server - I've got 3!
I love mine :-) just add some memory & a cheap graphics card. XBMC is brilliant, sabnzbd, couchpotato, sickbeard & headphones are all working so this has transformed the way we watch tv. It streams to the kids games consoles, laptops, Squeezebox & ipad & is plugged into our main tv, remote access works too. Every home should have one.

ardandy: yep you're prob right about the CB expiry, at least I hope so, I bought 2!

Last order we placed from them came in 2 days. I doubt it'll be 10 anyway.
damn, awesome deal. Just got mine delivered today from ebuyer.

Looking to use this to raid a few sata drives of different sizes (200gb, 750gb, 250gb) to use as a file server and xbmc streaming to ipad/tv.

Should I go down the WHS 2011 route or linux?
Unraid is a popular choice if looking at solely a storage server though technically is a software raid, personally I've always had no end of issues with windows SMB shares unless the clients are also Windows (doesn't matter how many ways I say guest access is fine, it forgets on reboot!), I know others have overcome it. I tend to side with linux for such servers. Just works for me

Windows 8 is the best alternative. Even Microsoft admit WHS is defunct as it's unique features are part of Win 8.

There's also a new BIOS update (google it) and a few steps to do so you can enable AHCI in the BIOS.

FreeNAS is what I'd recommend if you don't want/have Windows.

Great machines...masses of info for buyers over in the N40L thread over at AVForums if your unsure of what OS to run/graphics card to use/Memory to use etc..

avforums.com/for…tml

I've jumped ship to a beefier Proliant ML110 now but am tempted to pick up another N40L at this price...
I bought one of these as well... and am extremely impressed with it... Mind you it is HP... and goes against my religion having worked for them and swore I would never buy a HP product.. but at the price... who is going to complain. Awesome for the price, especially when you look at how versatile it is compared to just a normal NAS product.

If anyone is looking decent NAS software try "Open Media Vault"... its debian based and a lot better than Freenas in my opinion.

I'm running whs 2011 no probs at all, also got sab sick couch xmbc pseudotv rom broser with 5 emulators, mp3 server and I can output in 3d without a blip. Windows 8 is rubbish and as per usual will take a year to even get sorted and then it will still be garbage in my eyes. Win 7 is the only choice for users who want ms and don't want to put on whs. But each to their own ;-)

WHS is pretty good esp at £30 and win8 is difficult to get that cheap legitimately for a clean install. I like the way it looks after backups of all the machines in the house and provides me with a URL to share/ stream media and files anywhere. Not sure I'd prefer windows 8 for the N40 having used win8 on my desktop since release. I do like it on my desktop though.
Hey guys,

I have an Intel Desktop Board D945GCLF2 (Atom 330 Based) with two disks (a 320GB and a 500GB 2.5 inches).
What will be the difference in power consumption between the N4-L and my Atom 330? A rough estimate helps a lot.

Cheers.

apart from games, probably everything that this can do.
Windows 8 can do all the things EHS can (Storage pool etc). For the price then yes but all things been even there's no need for WHS anymore. Hence why it's so cheap. MS have binned supporting WHS so it won't be an option soon.

^^^ Stupid comment.

Because a Pi comes with a decent case and the ability to plug in 4 (up to 6 with top caddy) HDs.
(Hint, it doesn't).

I await your next comment on e.g. a caraven as "cold. Not a tent".

any way to get a clean install using the upgrade version? I have multiple legit windows 7/xp keys from old laptops to provide as the upgrade, but is it possible to do this cleanly on the N40L, since MS hasn't released the full Win8 package.

I dont understand why people would want to install WHS or a mircrosoft product when there are so many better open source alternatives that will give you a hell of a lot more scope and flexibility..... and its free.....

Can I use this for a simple home set-up or should I be looking for somehting a little less sophicated such as something like this?
ebuyer.com/245…esn
If someone could explain in simple terms the main differences then that would be much appreicated.
All I really would like is somewhere all of the files / pictures / videos / music can be stored and accessed via any device in the house or externally via the internet. Also I need to be able to backup the main storege disk easily?

Thanks
Simon
For most people, MS products are free too.

Simple GUI's and wizards make things easy to do.
Sorry, also would I need to buy anything else to go with this equipment to faciliate the above requirements?

This will need an operating system installing like Windows 7/8/Home Server. Basically like having another PC and using that to share files. If you don't know how, go for the easy plug and play option.

I have a N36L and a D525 Atom based 4bay linitx.com/vie…=ts that I built myself just before the Microserver deals started - all other things are equal (same HDs etc, tho the N36L still has the original 250GB HD as a 5th drive)).

pgregg.com/blo…ke/

I ran both machines behind an Energenie to measure power usage.

Both machines together cost just under £10 per month to run with the N36L about £1 more than D525 (i.e. the D525 uses less power).

The D525 is a little more powerful and power hungry than your Atom 330 - so for you the difference is likely to be a little more than £1 per month in electricity costs.
* I pay Northern Ireland electric rates - I've no idea how they compare to the rest of the UK given we can't really shop around for suppliers. I expect mainland to be cheaper.

Hope this helps.

Saw that before. And that is a multi-Pi parallel computer. There are no Hard drives in there.
Still doesn't come with a case.

Because if you don't know Linux, troubleshooting FreeNAS etc. is a royal pain in the ****. I wouldn't normally champion Micro$oft but at £30 I have been very pleased with WHS. It is straightforward to set up and does everything you need from your server without the need to know any programming language or syntax. And it stays working.

I got my N40L to replace a Buffalo Linkstation Live. It was okay as far as the hardware goes but the constant maintenance, in Linux, in order to get it to do what I want (SqueezeBox server, etc.) really was doing my head in. If you know Linux then go ahead, save yourself £30, but if you are mid-level tech-savvy (like me) or less, it is money very well spent.
