HP Mixed Reality Headset inc Controllers £349 AMAZON!

I have seen Vive and Rift fans criticising MR Headsets because the HDMI and USB connections are directly connected to the headset - not that big a deal until you find the need to replace them because your dog took a liking to chewing them.
The HP is (I believe) the only headset that has replaceable connections for USB and HDMI - apart from which it is also one of the most expensive headsets in it's home tuft - the USA.
Great to see such a low price through a reputable supplier like Amazon!

And it does, big time. Sent mine back and ordered a Rift.

I have this headset and can recommend it - don't let those salty Rift and Vive guys stop you from trying this - the resolution is way better than the Rift or Vive and there is no messing around with multiple cameras as it uses the same tech Microsoft used in the HoloLens (Inside Out Tracking)

I tried it expecting it to be great based on the spec. Although the resolution is better it doesn't actually look better, screen door is much more obvious and the colours look washed out and dull. The rift looks miles better, even at £500 - £600 the rift would be worth the difference, at £400 with 5 free titles it's a no brainer.

I wouldn't take much notice of anything moremixedreality say, i did and it's all bull.

Like I say - do yourself a favour and try one of the demos at PCWorld/Currys:

Very have actually got better as the years have gone on.
Had some amazing deals with them the last two years.

I also had one of these and returned it 2 days later and ordered an Oculus rift.

The fact you can't adjust the pupil distance is a major flaw so if you have a pupil distance of greater than 67mm then I wouldn't bother u less you are happy to only get a clear image from one eye at a time.

The resolution is better on the mixed reality sets but this isn't that noticeable in reality. They do have less noticeable screen door effect though. Although I don't notice it too much on the oculus once in in a game.

Another point is that I find the fit of the over the head straps on the rift more comfortable than the halo type design of the mixed reality sets. They kind of just press on your forehead and back of the head which gets a bit annoying. They also move around quite a bit of you are in a game where you have to move your head round alot.

The controller's are "ok" but do feel cheap and flimsy and aren't the most comfortable of designs

If it werent for the fixed lenses I would probably have kept it though to be honest, as I liked the inside out tracking, and with SteamVR support coming it would of suited my needs.

How well does the inside-out tracking work?
I'm curious how it handles controllers being outside your field of view?

I like the inside out tech and slightly higher res screen than my rift
but the rift and vive are still superior in tracking and 6dof 3D movement. Plus both rift and vive have the option of the TPCAST wireless add-on (for 350, mind you) whereas these one-off headsets will never get such a thing nor any long term support
HP, Dell, Lenovo, and acer have just dipped their toe in the water with their me-too headsets
Oculus has 1 product
HTC arguably only has a few products, but which are related in tech
the others don't really care about this and just use it to push their crappy hardware

A few of the things i picked up on using the HP for a day.

Good points.
1 - easy to set up
2 - tracking works fine
3 - visor flips up (although it feels like it could drop off at any minute).

Bad
1 - it feels cheap, the headset is all plastic and the controllers are like an after thought.
2 - it may not fit your head properly, on mine it just sort of sat on my head and moved about too much, it was impossible to keep the headset focused for long, also i got quite a bit of light coming through the nose area.
3 - the lcd screens are really poor compared to the oleds on the rift, vive or even gear.
4 - adjusting the quality settings didn't appear to do anything, low looked the same as very high.

It works even when the controllers are behind you - someone on YouTube demoed this by showing the shadows of the controllers working when the controllers were behind his back - sorry can''t find it now but it does appear to work really well!

Can see a big future for these types of devices. Alternatively for a much cheaper option just join the Labour party....

You can change the IPD in software, apparently it works quite well start/settings/mixed reality/headset

hmmm i thought the Oled with pentil is terrible for VR, and HP is higher resolution, so it will be better than older headset. Can you explain why it is worst? SDE?

The SDE on the HP is finer but because the colour and contrast isn't great it seems more obvious. I wasn't happy with the image quality compared to my S6/Gear so i sent it back. When i ordered and fired up the Rift i was blown away by the difference. The only advise i would give is try a WMR and a Rift and see for yourself.

Yeah but it only covers 58mm-67mm so pretty limited in comparison to the other options out there. Software adjustment isn't that great compared with actually moving the lenses anyway. But if you fall out of this range then your experience with this may not be ideal.

If your IPD is within that range then this may be brilliant, if you fall out of this range I suggest trying it before purchasing or looking into other options

tomorrow I have the pleaure of navigating another RMT strike; strange that Labour condones such action...at least they never say the strikes have no basis for taking place other than political activism.

Ya' melt.

Did you ever get rhe rift? Is it much better? I'm finding my hp headset beryl poor but I'm liking the resolution. Even though it goes out of focus in the center. How does the rift compare?

Yes i've had the Rift for a few weeks, it's better in every way. Picture quality and immersion is better, colours, contrast, screen door is less obvious even though the grid is finer on the HP. It's more comfortable and doesn't move around going out of focus like the HP, it stays pretty cool (i could feel the heat on my eyes with the HP). The touch controllers are pure perfection, they sit perfectly in your hand.

Basically it feels like a top class product made from A grade materials and great design, the HP feels cheap and thrown together in comparison. With the new Rift Core 2.0 UI coming December it should get even better
