Seems to be a DSG exclusive (not on HP Store) with great specs -
i7 Gen 10
MX250 Graphics with 4GB DDR5
8GB RAM
512GB SSD & 32GB Optane accelerator
14" IPS screen
USB C & USB 3.1
Currys claim it's £300 off - take with a pinch of salt! - but still a v good price for the package.

Great laptop, Got on the black friday sale. Always had i3's but preferred to get an i7 due to computing power. This laptop has a fantastic display and plays 4K extremely well. SSD is quick. Be cautious with the intel optane memory. If you install windows fresh then you need to disable RAID in the BIOS first. After install, You'll need to download intel RST and it will bond together and work. You could use it as an additional drive if you wanted.

Pros:
802.11 AX is just wonderful and a great chipset. Runs far superior than my previous AC module.
Fast veracrypt performance.
reasonable load times.
Great for daily use including study, work, blah blah blah.

Cons:
Fan is running wild. Hasn't shut up for a few hours and nothing running at the moment.
No backlit keyboard.
Battery lasted perhaps 4-6 hours with a balanced setting.
Sound is questionable but I have expensive headphones for that purpose.

Got a PS4 for games so don't bother on the laptop.
Definitely need to install a 16GB DDR4 module but mainly for virtualisation.

Pros - Great processor, discrete graphics, quality screen, 512GB SSD
Cons - 14" screen (although it has HDMI to plug into monitor or TV), large amounts of games may require an external USB drive

More than sufficient for school work and very competent for mid range gaming. If it's in budget, can't go too far wrong.

That's a good deal as well, although it doesn't have a discrete graphics card and (I think) i7 gen 10 has the edge on Ryzen 7. Also you can, if you really want, upgrade memory but you can't add a MX250 GPU to a laptop with integrated graphics.
Nice saving thanks!!

Agree on most, but wont Touchscreen give the edge

Doubt it, most people I know who get touchscreen laptops never use them. It’s handy if it’s a detachable 2in1 device like a surface book but not a laptop
Not sure if this is allowed here, I have a Currys gift card if it is of any help for anyone

Tbh, on a 15.6" laptop, not really. Each to their own, but even on a 11" netbook we had I preferred the keyboard. Maybe it's an age thing!

Unlikely - there is a specific range of HP Gaming laptops, such as Pavilion Gaming & Omen.
This one's overall better than the and version. Better CPU and dedicated graphics beats more ram and touchscreen for me
Spec is good but it’s still quite a lot of money for a Pavilion - which aren’t the most durable built machines. Perhaps I’ve been spoilt by Elitebooks in the past...

He’d be extremely lucky to get a £650 machine like this! It’s not a gaming machine though, you might be better off with a proper ‘gaming laptop’ like the Acer Nitro 5 posted earlier and it’ll save you £200 in the process.

If you need portability, the 14 inch screen is very much a pro... 15.6 and 17 inch screen would be a con, for many users.
What's the screen quality like on this?

As good as you will get on a laptop - it's an IPS screen, rather than the older, dull screens you get on some cheaper models. Same screen as they use for the business laptops, afaik.

Bought this and had to return it due to the high-pitched coil whine. I understand that coil whine is normal but this laptop's coil whine is unsually high-pitched and it hurts my ear.

I brought it back to the Currys store, the staff opened up a new unit and it had the same high-pitched coil whine.

However, I was allowed to get a refund as they said it could be a 'faulty batch'.

What a waste - the specs at this price was such a bargain.

Fam, do you get any loud coil whine noises? I do agree that the fan is loud too.

Not at all, Open it up and check the fan. If it's like that then replace it or if under warranty, Get the clowns to do it. It will probably take them a week.

Mine isn't too loud.

After a year or so, I'd definitely take out extra warranty with someone. I've had HP laptops run so hot, They started to melt the plastic.
I bought one of these, delivered last night, very pleased with it so far.

Interestingly, the box lists the model number as 14-ce3520na (not 14-ce3520sa) If you look at the specs on HP's site for 14-ce3520na, it is the same but no mention of the nVidia MX250. However mine definitely does have the MX250 4GB.

The fan was running fast during initial setup, on mains power, but quietened down after a few hours when all Windows updates etc. were complete. When on battery the fan does not run with just light browsing, or even watching a YouTube video. The CPU does not run at full speed on battery which will keep it cooler.

System Info states the CPU base frequency is 1.5GHz, which I think means HP have configured the CPU for TDP-up (25W). The default 15W configuration has a 1.3GHz base clock.

People have mentioned coil whine - I can't really hear anything but I'm >40 so could be outside my audible range. If I put my ear right up to it when the fan is not running I can hear a slight electrical buzz/hum but it's not high pitched.

It has only 1 RAM slot, so if you want to upgrade you'll have to replace the existing 8GB.

I have the i5 model. Mines configured for 15 - 18w. Same with the Fan. Went wild while doing updates and setups now even when on my bed the fan doesn't kick in while browsing the net and youtube when on battery power.

I have hear a slight buzz/crackle with mine too.

Any chance you can tell me which variant of the MX250 is included? 1D13 or 1D52?

It would be listed as a hardware ID in device manager. Cheers!
It's 1D13
