Very decent.

Quite a beast of a machine

I'd up the ram to 16GB and the SSD to 500GB. Maybe a bluray burner. Apart from that, pretty perfect.

Not bad, but let down by the trend of using GDDR3 over GDDR5 to cut costs. Also single channel RAM could be a help or hindrance depending on whether you upgrade or not.

Meh RAM is cheap.

5400 rpm drive a little slow these days, should be 7200. Screen resolution good. No gigabit lan?

agree. maybe swap the hard drive to another SSD could be better

Only weakness is the graphics card. There has been deals for systems with the 960m round this price. Depends if your priority is cpu or gpu speed.

And without optical drive or IPS screen. Depends what the buyer's priorities are and what they're willing to upgrade later on the Dell.

Nope. He's referring to system RAM, its a single stick, which is good if you want more as you can buy one more stick and double capacity but bad if you don't want more RAM as single stick is generally slower than dual channel

Very nice. Maybe if you found a matched stick of ram you could run dual channel?

All goes when when you see it ha a 950m for £750. For that sort of price, you'd have a 960m. Big difference.

With an SSD and comparable processor? I ask because I'm looking for something of similar spec for as cheap as I can get. I'd be tempted by this, but I think its hideous

If it's any help, I took delivery yesterday and it's not as hideous as feared! Very happy with the performance so far, although I've only done some basics. Would of course have preferred larger SSD, more RAM, better graphics, etc...but couldn't find a better deal at this budget. Build your own on PC Specialist was coming in around £1,000 on the spec I wanted and I just didn't want to stretch that far budget-wise.

I agree, I looked around, (a lot) and couldn't find anything to beat this for the price. Just bought today. The clincher for me is that it is using the new skylake quad core processor.

The amount of dual core haswells at a similar price. This is a quad core skylake, (release Sept 2015), with SSD and dedicated graphics from HP.

HP is number three in laptop rankings

To be honest, if there was a similar specc'ed MSI I would have taken it but there is not.

This is the equivalent http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/9S7-16GD51-1804-MSI-CX61-2QF-1804UK_1769874.html

Note: no SSD. There is no point buying a laptop without SSD....

How does this compare to the Dell inspiron 15 7000 that was posted up about a week before this? Is also 50 pounds cheaper than this HP

This does have a 128GB SSD, but I'd still be tempted to go for the Inspiron because it has the upgrade 960M with GDDR5 RAM which will definitely improve the graphics performance.

I just need to check whether there are 2 hard drive bays in the Inspiron - if there is I'm sold and I'll be placing an order this week!

EDIT: There's an option to purchase with a 128GB SSD +1 TB HDD set up, so definitely two HDD bays. I'm sold! Shame about the 21-25 day dispatch time though

Damn, just checked out the Dell, looks nice.

dell.com/uk/…/pd?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

£749 + £50 SSD, probably should have gone to dell savers.... crap! I wonder is it too late to cancel??

Is there an additional ram slot on the HP pavilion to insert another ram stick?
Is the 128gb SSD separate from the 1TB? Thinking of buying the cheaper model without the SSD & putting in my own bigger capacity SSD.

This looks great for gaming. Could this be the best sub 1k gaming laptop?

pasted the text below from the hp site forum as i am thinking of purchasing this lap top but the guy has a point or maybe doesnt, i dont know and am hoping someone will have the relevant knowledge to shed some light, here goes..
I am thinking of buying this laptop but as it is new the details on the web site seem incorrect. I have called HP sales about this and they have as far as I can tell just told me what the website already says. Can anybody tell me if you can upgrade the memory in this laptop? According to the maintenance manual it appears to have two Dimm slots and only uses one. According to HP sales it only has one. According to the website and sales the network port is 10/100. Really? If this is true I didn;t realise anybody made anything nowadays that wasn't capable of 1Gbps. Any accurate help would be great. I can't even find any quickspecs on it.

Hi Icy.
The recent comment from Jamesjaa has me confused, too.
Could you confirm the network speed (10/100 or 1Gbps?) and the DIMM sslot situation - if it were upgradeable, it would seem to be a near-perfect spec for me.
I am a realist. If I can find a great spec at a superb price (don't forget 3% on Quidco as well as the 7% offer) than I will probably go for it, even if it doesn't have the last tiny bit of bleeding edge performance on paper.
For example, who out there could actually tell the difference in service between GRRD3 and GDDR5, or a 960 over a 950? Come on, guys.
I give this heat, because it has two drives, a quick Haswell and a very capable GPU.

Took delivery of this today. Can anyone else that got one confirm if they have any labels on the bottom?
Normally you'd get labels with model details and serial number but mine has nothing. You wouldn't know what model it is.

Thanks IcyDeals. Puts my mind at ease a little.
Seems odd that there's no serial number or even a model number.

Just checked and you can find both model and serial numbers on a label if you eject the battery. Guess they put it here to stop it coming off.

Thanks

single channel vs dual channel makes zero difference in real world performance, and only minor differences in synthetic benchmarks.

also, ive ordered this laptop through a work scheme. has anyone who have received this laptop got any first impressions? the main points for me that i'd like to know is portability and battery life if poss? just general impressions on how portable is it and rough battery life whilst not gaming

Jamesjaa....did you have any luck regarding the RAM issue? I'm also considering this laptop but will not buy unless I can upgrade the RAM! I was also told by HP support you can't but the manual says it has two Dimm slots? Seems like this question has been asked a few times from scrawling the net but nobody yet has given a clear answer.

didnt sorry deepfat, i plumped for this one anyway, read loads of reviews and unless everyone one of them has missed a trick the ram hasnt been flagged as a major f any issue, im certain you can get gpt more bang for the buck as they say, or more for a little bit more but youve got to draw the line in the sand somewhere, unless youre lucky amd money isnt an issue, also figure none of the pc geeks lol have said anything overly detrimental so it cant be all bad .. can it !!
