Is it impossible to find an i5 7th gen, 8gb, 256gb ssd without a bloody dvdrw that doesn’t cost the earth? Bin looking for ages

Original Poster

This is an 8th generation machine, not comparable to the 7th gen ones. I’ve edited my original post to make that clearer.

Take it the graphics make this no good for gaming? despite fancy processor?

Almost certainly not, though it should cope with some games on "low" setting. You can see example benchmarks for the "Intel UHD Graphics 620" (which is the integrated graphics solution built into the i5-8250U) towards the bottom of this page:
notebookcheck.net/Int…tml

But it's really not been designed for gaming. Different market segment entirely.

Processor would be good for Photoshop, Lightroom etc.. Video Editing Software and so on.. gaming demands a strong GPU which this really doesn't have.

I need to find a laptop for an Xmas gift.
Very tempted to pick this one up. The specs, extras and price seem to be very good value.

Does anyone have any experience with this laptop, or HP laptops in general?

I've never owned a HP before so I'm not sure what to expect in terms of build quality.

Cheers.

pretty main stream, hp have been around the block. I'd trust it and very tempted with this!

I was going to wait for black Friday, but went for this instead. Ordered yesterday, arrived today. very please with it. Looks nice, super quick to start up. had to do a few updates but you do with any computer. Disc drive is a little on the loud side, but nothing I cant live with.

If you want any accessories with it, Order this first, then if you have uni days log in with that for discount on the accessories. you can't get this bundle on the student store, I tried. It's really hard to log out of the student store once in, so make sure you order the bundle first.

I'm in the same boat. Was originally planning to wait until Black Friday as well, but I'm not sure if we will see any deals as good as this on a laptop offering 8th Gen Intel, SSD, HDD, Optical Drive & FHD Screen (plus the free printer & 3 years care plan).

HP support informed me this deal will expire by the end of this week. I guess I don't have long to make my mind up!

Good to hear you're happy with your purchase!

Does it have a backlit keyboard? I sometimes use the laptop in a dark room, so would be useful to have a backlit keyboard

I'm in two minds of whether to go for this HP Pavilion - i5 8250u quad core, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD for £649, or another hot deal - which is HP 250 G6 - i7 7500 dual core, 256 GB SSD for £549.

It's £100 extra for an 8th gen i5 quad core processor vs. a 7th gen dual core, and 128GB more SSD but no HDD. The pavilion is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Yes it has a backlit keyboard the light is white round the keys . if you look back at the previous picture post the bench mark for the i7 7500 rates a lot lower then the 8th gen i5-8250u. which is why I chose this one.

I've not set the printer up yet. i have 2 already, but looking at the leaflet this one does not have the new limits set to the ink program, so you should be able to go for the £7.99 a month program for 4 months, use a referral code you will get 5.

I'm going to cancel one of my ink programs and set this printer up with a new email address. will get me 5 months free ink, and an extra 1 month on the other printer i have, so saving me nearly £50 on ink fees. that and the 3 years care pack was too good to resist.

I also have a HP printer, so the new one is just a bonus which I might sell or give as a present to someone. I can't be bothered with the ink subscriptions as the printer is rarely used. I've just gone ahead and purchased this laptop. Thanks for the advice :).

Nice deal, thanks for listing

You have to use the £50 discount code

Can anyone who has bought this tell me what the screen is like? It looks overall like a premium laptop (aluminium plate, backlit keyboard, etc) but the screen is normally the make or break on these.

I too would like to know this, i suppose can always return under distance selling.

Hi, I received mine on Monday, I didn't actually like the size of it it was too big for my liking. I didn't switch it on to test it. So processed a refund which got approved under the category "changed my mind". Expecting DHL to come today to pick it up. Looks wise the laptop looks great, with a nice aluminium finish, and looks expensive. I think personally 14" screen is the perfect size for a laptop for the tasks I will be using it for. I wasn't expecting the 15.6 one for be quite as bulky. Each to their own.

Thank you - ordered!

Thanks OP, fantastic deal. Ordered and can't wait for delivery on Friday.

Decided to bite the bullet and order before the Coupon expired. Due for delivery Monday, looking forward to receive it.

Thanks OP Ordered last night, said delivery today but not even been dispatched yet so probably Monday or Tuesday. On the HP store account it is coming up as two orders but I only placed one, which is slightly concerning though. For those that have received theirs already, whats the initial impressions?

just cancelled my delivery for tomorrow and reordered at the black Friday price of £ 589.00 super hot

I had held off from ordering, went and checked hp website and seen the new code.

just ordered

it did but they have pulled the deal

e voucher has expired

Just received this morning, here's some initial feedback points:

- HP's packing needs to be improved. Laptop box strapped to printer box, not other packaging around both.
- Laptop feels nice and sturdy, metal body mostly (I think)
- Backlit keyboard is lovely!
- Not got past Windows 10 welcome screen yet (had to go to work), but the screen looks nice.
- Integrated battery, so it's a well put together package.

Little gutted to see this now at £589 for Black Friday, except without the 3yr warranty and printer (which I've already sold)
Will report back once got to play with it more.

cancelled my order from Friday for them to still ship it today + they have now processed today's order too so i have 2 lots coming both with printers and extended warranty lol, at least i got a bundle today at the £589 price with the extras

@sionwhughes or anyone else who already has theirs. Can you confirm if it's UK or US keyboard layout please? Or better yet post a picture of it.
