I'm not a laptop expert so I have no idea of how good a deal this is. I was browsing and just happened to come across this and wondered if it was good since someone told me to look for i5 or i7 processors. So please be gentle.

Specs don't show on Currys site as to the GPU - it's the Intel HD4600 on HP site. This GPU has been noted to perform between 30-40% better than the HD4000.

i3 version currently £349 at Argos

Is it worth paying £50 more for the i5 processor ?

Is it worth paying £50 more for the i5 processor ?

the argos one is i3-3217M
the currys one is i5-4200U

looking at http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

the i5 is much more superior (Ctrl+F the two processor ref)
I personally would pay that £50 as i could use that extra oomph. depends on your usage.

Thanks for that, very useful website.

Would you say this is the best value i5 processor in the market at the moment ?

Definitely the best at the moment in my opinion but the market isn't great. Hasn't really improved from last time I looked, last Christmas time.

Argos is a U processor. Got one sitting here. Cat number starts 145.

I went in to two branches today (Tottenham Court Rd and Oxford Street) that was on their 'best deal' promotion. If I remember correctly, the description besides the model said Intel HD 4400 and not the 4600. Someone may want to reconfirm this or maybe correct me.

Thinking of getting this for my parents- any better for the price? Web, email simple tasks etc.. but speed is key for them (getting on and all that every second counts ) x

I have this laptop bought from currys 6months ago for the same price £399 (£599 with £200 off it said)
Not a bad laptop so far

Not getting this on HP Site to order? can anybody please review this system?

this model was released about 2 months ago. may be similar model but they have made this thinner.

Tempted to buy this earlier but clock speed is only 1.6Ghz! Turbo boost to 2.3 but the 3rd gen ones have a much higher clock speed. The salesman couldn't really reply when I quizzed him on it so I walked out to think about it.

Any experts on here care to tell us all what is better? A 3rd gen with higher clock speed or 4th gen at 1.6?

Defiantly!!! Argos i3 comes with 4GB RAM and this one with 8 also HDD 500 and this one 1TB
This is the cheapest i5-4200 with these spec on the market

Yesterday at Argos it was £379 but is now £499. for the lesser spec of 4GB ram and 500GB hard drive.
I bought the Currys one today and very happy with it.

Details on the site seem the same?

If you are with O2, you can get £25 off £250 spend at Currys with O2 moments.

If you are with Amex, you can get further £10 off on £50+ spend so essentially you can get this in £365. 1.57% TCB is also available but not sure if it will be given after using the O2 code.

Depends on the model really, mainly if its a U or an M on the end. U tends to extend battery life whilst M is a bit better perfomance. If you are comparing a 3rd gen M with a 4th gen U then imo the 3rd gen will be better and cheaper. I suspect this is the case as clock speeds would be similar otherwise. A 4th Gen M will be better than a 3rd gen U or M, U standing for Ultra-low power and M simply for Mobile.

Ultimately it depends on what you will use the laptop for and your budget e.g if you are using your laptop for everyday tasks - internet, word processing etc then the difference will be unnoticable.

Oh and just in case, an i5 4th gen will almost always outperform an i3 3rd gen. I'm assuming you are comparing i5s lol.

O2 offer is available instore only

I've just ordered one, also available in choice of 3 colours. I've been looking around at various deals over the last week and this one seems to be the best spec for the price.

anyone know what graphics card it has etc? can't find any details.

does anyone know any info about graphics card? can't find any details.

seems for extra £30 you get dedicated graphics card.

No touchscreen :-(

Hot. I bought similar one with 750 GB only 3 weeks ago for £539. Damn it.

oops, no touchscreen:( I got with the touchscreen though.:) Not sure if it is hot then now.:)

couldn't resist and bought one. also same price in store and accepted £25 off with o2 voucher.

It's not a dedicated card, it uses an APU which puts the processor and GPU on a single chip. While it's technically a separate unit it doesn't have dedicated video memory and has to share memory like other entry level laptops, and with low power components like these the potential benefits of an APU aren't going to be seen here. According to the benchmarks on notebokcheck the integrated graphics options on Intel's 4th gen chips, like this deal, will outperform AMD APUs assuming both are at low clock speeds. Neither are going to play blockbuster games at enjoyable frame rates of course, but I expect there will be a difference when it comes to games like Minecraft that while not technically the most graphically demanding, benefit from increasingly powerful machines behind them.

How about a touchscreen one for £50 more ? Does the A8 chip make much difference from the i5 performance wise ?

I tried to reserve this online and loaded the 02 Moments code into the voucher box but it was not accepted. Did I do something wrong? BTW, I had gone to the Currys site vis Quidco, could this be the reason the 02 code was rejected?

thank you for the info. I did realise after I written it and read more which I should have done first. I ended up getting the one posted for the reason you have posted when I did more research.
