HP one has a pretty good spec & I think is a bargain @ £236.55 even tho it is a refurb.

What about sticking in a link to the Dell one?

Can you link us to any more i3 refurbs at this price from a reputable seller? Haven't seen one in months...

That listing is really annoying. Says 500gb hard drive in the listing title but 320gb in the spec further down.

Why not?

Had my DV6 for 8 months now & had no faults or problems whatsoever, upgraded the drive in mine from a 500 to a 750, rung HP & they were more than happy to send me the recovery discs out.

And in those 8 months it has been on a lot of the time, due to hosting a small website, a little FTP of a weekend and a Minecraft server for the last 6 months

Probably done 4 reboots since October & those were just because applications needed a restart before use

Only gripe with it is the mousepad doesn't have clicky buttons... but hey thats what USB mice are for

Some there for around this price point. £237 is a good price given the HDD shortages, but there will be much better deals in the next weeks.

That link only gave me four threads, with prices ranging £350 to £454.
just google "laptop reliability chart" HP have the worst failure rate, I wouldn't risk the money on it. voted cold.
4 major Chinese companies manufacturer about 90% of the worlds laptop.. acer, asus, hp, fujitsu, sony, dell, apple, toshiba, ibm/levono, etc. all start life at the same places.

Charts over 2 years old. Might as well be 50 years in IT. Really doesn't ring true with recent laptop repairs I see as an IT Tech.

Good to hear a rare voice of reason when it comes to slating HP reliability especially from someone who knows what they're talking about. There's 7% of a difference in reliability on that chart anyway between top and bottom. The risk is more than covered by the saving you make in buying a laptop at this price.

Am I the only on appalled by the fact that in this day and age you have a 1 in 5 chance of your laptop going breasts up?
DONT buy this! i had 2 HP G series laptops and they overheat within a 3-6 months i had two so this is not a coincidence, got this repaired 4 times still overheated dont buy this.

difference between asus and HP is 10% after 3 years not 7. A 1 in 4 chance of your hp laptop failing in 3 years is bad. 1 in 6.66 for asus isnt good either but a lot better. HP customer service is supposed to be appalling from what ive heard as well.

It says a lot about the brand though rather than the technology. It suggests HP's quality control is poor.
Who sells more laptops?

Asus or HP?

As i've said in a previous thread, if i sold 1 laptop & it never failed in 10 years, i could say i have a 0% failiure rate, whereas someone else could sell 100 laptops & 1 fails in 10 years, it would be a 1% failiure rate, 1% is worse than 0%,

Doesn't make my laptop the best laptop in the world, and that doesnt make the other company unreliable

(hope this came out right lol, sounded right in my head)
What is HP Laptop reliability like these days? Do we have recent figures?
might be mine what i returned when the fan went on it, hate hp since and their call centre worse than 3g and bt etc
i bought a smaller (circa 11") hp pavillion a year ago, its been on about 6 hours a day every day since, and had no problems. All the HP software is a bit annoying because im not techy enough to remvoe it all, but in reality its only one box to close when you boot up.

Not had a problem with heat, but it only gets used on a table. If you put it on something soft that covers the vents, it will of course get hot.
HP. Ultra unreliable. Bargepole. Touch. DON'T.

You're right. I didn't actually look at the link. I just remembered seeing it before and was thinking of dell or hp at the time and it was 7% between them. I think these figure are greatly reduced for those who take care of their appliances. My girlfriend picks her acer up by the screen and leaves it on cushions. It's been away 3 times in 2 years. If I wasn't aware of this I would put people off buying an acer.

It's upwards of £120 for a 3 year guarantee on a laptop now but I'd recommend it to anyone because they are all unreliable. l get a new one every 3 years anyway. Get an extended warranty and treat it like crap if you want
Good luck getting one of these in good condition. Where I work we bought a few and one had a totally smashed in screen, it obviously hadn't even been checked or the courier went to town on it.
P.S. Merry Christmas guys:D
Well I ordered 2..... the original laptop the OP mentioned is now not showing, so probably out of stock. No confirmation email and not showing properly on my order history so I guess I will cross my fingers and wait til tuesday when they are back at work !

Generally faulty motherboards, I work for a company that is MS Certified Refurbisher, and some HPs e.g. DV6, DV6000, DV9000 (well those are absolute garbage) DV7, Probook 4520S all can have major motherboard faults. i3 based G62s can have problems with the BIOS or Motherboard and won't boot. HP are the largest manufacturer of laptops in the world or were and as a result statistically will have a large amount of failures in comparison to other manufacturers. Personally I wouldn't touch DV6, DV7, DV6000, DV9000 and i3 based G62, they seem to be worse than the P6xxx (core i3 variants) I'd also probably be wary of the G6 too.

Also absolutely do not ever touch any Advent refurbs, they are rediculously poor machines, also getting the drivers for them can be an insanely difficult task. You have been warned.

How about the Lenovo Thinkpad Edge, more specifically the E520? Ordered one but never had an IBM/Lenovo in the past and you seem to know your stuff.

I have to agree that HPs are not all that. I have had a Compaq, a HP, and an Asus, and Asus is definitely better.
