Don't mind him, typical troll. I bet he doesn't even own it. I do, and it.s not slow. Go for it. It.s a good deal. They have it even cheaper at Stansted duty-free if you have way there. I saw it at 629.

Ignore the troll.

It’s not slow at all, I have the previous generation CPU in my HP laptop (without the graphics card) and I run Solidworks on it.

It's 4 core / 8 thread CPU with a passmark of 8115 and a single thread rating 2073. It's absolutely nowhere near slow. It's about the best you'll get for this money. Maybe he meant the GPU which scores 1267 and is just average for gaming.

The RAM is 1x 8GB DDR4 stick and the 256GB SSD is M.2 so yes you should be able to upgrade. As is normal with current HP models you'll likely need to unscrew and remove the complete base plastics. I'm not familiar with this model as we haven't had any in as refurbs yet. If it's like its predecessor then you can upgrade.

Is the GPU better than Intel UHD 620 integrated to i7 8gen. and witch one will be more reliable in the long term?

Yes it's better than the Intel HD 620 graphics, neither are great for gaming though. Is it more reliable? When it breaks we'll find out.

so...
you can use solidworks for 1 part on basic pc or assembly of 16000 parts
where you need workstation

solidworks is not good performance indicator at all

How's the battery life? I'm looking for a laptop to take to uni daily. Although HP say up to 10 hours of battery life, one of the reviews states that they only get 45 minutes as a power-heavy user.

Also, is the trackpad nice?
Can't wait for the AMD Ryzen and Intel/AMD APUs to start hitting the market in notebooks.

See if they find their way into reasonable priced machines like this. The 8th gen Intel models with the Vega graphics nailed on the side look particularly good.
Great specs. Shame that the input power plug is still not standardized across the vendors. Hopefully usb3c will make it happen
At this price you might as well spend a bit more and get an XPS from Dell Outlet or something. Is this plastic? Graphics card is meh for the pricetag - usually you can get at least a 1050 at this price which would offer substantially better cooling.

EDIT: Just to add this is from a gaming perspective - if youre using it as a workstation then yeah the 8 threads are good but bit of a waste having the MX card in there. Like sure if youre desperate get it, but doesn't it make sense to just get integrated Vega with the intel chips to save battery power?

How can a pda be an alternative to laptop on campus? You want single portable device with decent computing power and apps that is good enough for your course.

I started in business in 1995 and the Psion 3/5/ and Revo proved invaluable.
Psion were the originators of todays smartphones.
The Gemini is effectively a Psion 5 which still has a groundbreaking keyboard but with cellular and instead of EPOC32, Android and Linux and colour screen.

I knew they'd be a few raised eyebrows with my post, I was just asking myself what I'd have (with my prior knowledge) if I was at Uni 2018.
I'd have two solutions, Gemini and PC, call me 'old school'
Cheers.
Ps
I have ordered Gemini Nov 2017 if I'm honest purely for nostalgia, but I have a feeling I'll use it more than expected.

no worries. I suspected that you are a senior citizen based on that post alone.
The young member who asked this question knows way more than both of us probably, and wanted to know performance of this specific device.
If I was going to uni I would not be happy typing onto tiny PDA(when everybody else got proper laptop), and copy stuff (material/assignments) back and forth between desktop and this. Its another thing that this PDA might not have the applications I need (depending on course I take)
Does anyone know of a good spec laptop with a HDMI in port ? I have a HP pavilion DV6 -6b50sa at the moment, with fingerprint recognition.Or does anyone know what model succeded this one please ?.I dont do games so i dont have to worry about that type of spec in a new one.

HDMI Input? You need an Alienware or MSI gaming laptop for that sort of thing really, you won't find it on any of these HP deals.

Looking forward to my bus pass in 12 years time!

8550u that why do your resarch about it people complain about it that is slow I would wait for new processors or go for some old gaming one as they really count trust me my 6 years old laptop i5-2410m as quick as my new with like i7 - 7200u , and tested others too trust me older strong processors will go still strong and quick better than weak new ones with u on the end
