I spent the day (Friday 21st) looking for a nice laptop deal for my young nieces Xmas pressie. Yes, I really mean a whole 20 hours solid!

I initially noted HP had some cracking prices in their sale, with on average £100-£200 off laptops (34 models), which made them very good prices for a top brand.

Then I spotted a 15% voucher code: 15OFFVC

NEW CODE for 15% off: 15OFFXMAS

I was looking at the Envy Ultrabooks (which are lovely looking machines). But I plumped for the Pavilion Ultrabook™ 14-b006sa. This is currently on sale @ Very for £500 reduced from £580. Also a lower spec variant of this model (b005sa) is in Currys @ £480.

I have posted the specs. below, but we are talking a 3rd gen Intel (Ivybridge), with HD4000 graphics, 6GB ram, a SSD of 32GB which means a boot time of ~8 seconds (!!) as well as a 750GB SATA, HDMI, USB3, Webcam, SD slot, battery up to 9 hours and all packed in a sleek, ultra-thin 1.8kg package!

A modern budget Ultrabook of that spec. for less than £300 after Quidco. Fill yer boots! There are several other stonking deals on there.

To top it all - free NEXT DAY delivery - Which should (hopefully!) mean I get it in time for Xmas.

A blinding deal IMHO. But hurry the code ends Tomorrow (23rd) and Quidco is only 15% for 24 hours (till the 23rd also)! So that could mean almost 30% off already nicely discounted machines.

Hope this helps some folks. Time to go to bed now (03:15!)....

PS: The slightly lower spec. variant of this model (14-b003sa) with 4GB and 320GB SATA can be yours for £314 after discount and £267 after Quidco. Yes, that's £267 for an Ivybridge Ultrabook with SSD!!!! Its £430 @ JL and that's discounted! [great mini-review there too].

if you went to work for 20 hours youd have fared better

I doubt it! In Britain today few people would have earned enough to make up for the saving...£500-£288=£212
Taking home nearly £11 an hour means that you are paid around £16 an hour before tax.
That's £640 a week, £2700 a month or £32,400 a year. Then you've got to take into account petrol, food and childcare.

I think spending a day saving cash for Christmas is great

I have just received mine. I ordered in the early hours of December 23rd (really the 24th) and have received it today, 27th December. My HP tracking did not change; I got the laptop when HP said I would.

I went for the HP Pavilion 14 – B006SA, the laptop in the title of this thread.

I work in IT and I’m into my computers (multiple 23” screens, SSD’s, RAID media servers for HD stuff, etc)

I am about to go traveling around the world for one to two years so I wanted a decent laptop. I have a small Samsung NC10 netbook which is great….but not really going to do the job for so long. My criteria was:

Light – I will be doing a lot of traveling so I needed it to be no more than 2KG. This one was 1.8KG….only 400g heavier than my Samsung NC10 netbook.

Powerful – I would be doing some photo processing, HDR photography and even some gaming if I get bored. Don’t believe the crap, the i3 is fine. Sure, it may not process a batch of photos as quick as an i5 or i7 but it will get it done fast enough. You never really ‘wait’ for photos to process anyway, you do something else like watch a video – you don’t even remember to check when it’s finished. Faster is better but not always the most convenient.

6GB memory is good, more is better but I was happy with anything more than 4GB (I have 16GB in the home system).

Cheap – It’s going to see the world. It’s going to get sand in it, maybe stolen, used heavily and likely broken. I can spend £800 and get some super macbook air wannabe, thinner and lighter but then I KNOW I’m going to be obsessing over it. This laptop was a good price for a good config.

    So how is it?

I like it. It feels light, it looks thin. I’ve only had about an hour to play but I’m very happy – it does what it says on the tin. I don’t think it’s cheap looking, I’ve used Asus, Dell and Lenovo laptops over the years and this is good in comparison. It’s not cheap looking it’s just not flashy.

So what don’t I like? The case is glossy, so fingerprints do stick out and you find yourself wiping all the time! The keyboard isn’t that good….however this may simply be because I’m used to typical PC keyboards and not laptop ones – I’ve hated every laptop keyboard!

I don’t like the Windows 8 layout but you can make it look and work like Windows 7 so who cares?

    Overall i'm happy.

Overheating generally only occurs when the GPU is being stressed too much … Overheating generally only occurs when the GPU is being stressed too much due to things like hardcore gaming or intense graphics editing. CPU overheating is less likely to occur because the extra power of the i7 and its 4 cores and hyper threads share the workload rather than a single CPU core doing all of the heavy work and getting too stressed thus causing it to overheat.

Not one part of your comment is true.

    1. Overheating occurs if a component is faulty, or you have the air vents covered like using it on a bed for extended periods of time. No GPU/CPU will overheat from 24/7 use at 100% load unless it's faulty, that includes however many cores the CPU has in whatever configuration.

    2. "it's 4 cores and hyper threads"........It has 4 cores and hyper threading technology, there is no such thing as "hyper threads". HyperThreading is a technology to make the operating system see twice the number of physical cores, theoretically improving processing that can be performed in parallel.

3."extra power of the i7"....again.....what!? That has nothing to do with it overheating, if anything it's the opposite, higher CPU speed generally has a higher TDP, either way you're wrong as a working CPU doesn't overheat unless it's been starved of airflow to it's heatsink. Intel CPUs are rated up to around 80c for continuous 100% load 24/7 usage.

    4. "hardcore gaming"......What?

    5. "Intense graphics editing".....This was the clincher that made me make this post......Seriously, do you always just talk randomly about stuff you don't have the faintest idea about.

    ....intense graphics editing indeed...lmao.

Is that like intense talking? Intense walking? Intense making a cup of tea? Intense....I dunno....

What is intense graphics editing? It's called "photo editing", generally photo editing applications don't make use of the GPU at all, recent versions of photoshop can use the GPU, but it's not "intense". Also, it's only really using CPU/GPU when applying effects, so we're talking long pauses of hardly being taxed at all...

It's just ridiculous no matter how you think about it, have you even used image editing software before?

Hardcore gaming, Is that like gaming after having had 10 coffees?

Received the base model 14-b003sa and setting it up for my parents and so far very happy with the purchase considering the price.

    Main factors for buying:

    1. Below budget of £320 (£313 without quidco and approx £270 with quidco)
    2. Lightness
    3. 14" screen so portable
    4. Great specification using latest intel tech considering the price

Unless I'm mistaken, there is nothing else out there that comes close to this laptop specs for the price paid.

This is my parents first laptop so need to keep it simple for them. Windows 8 tiles interface will be ideal for them!!

DSR law means u have 7 working days counting from the day after receipt of the item to let retailer know u wish to cancel contract and return item. U then have 30 days from that day to return item for full refund excluding return postage costs. You ARE entitled to full refund of postage costs for delivery to u though. Obviously in this case that doesn't apply because there aren't any. Under DSR you CANNOT open packaging and item must be returned in as new condition. DSR is to provide a cooling off period, not a try before u buy to see if it's suitable service.

I'd have thought the question would be, "is it an ultrabook" actually. … I'd have thought the question would be, "is it an ultrabook" actually. Most of us already have reasonable enough laptops and were looking for something compact and snazzy, which this isn't.

Right then genius lets take your first sentence, I will assume you knew it had a 14" screen before ordering
    and it weighed 1.8kg.
'were looking for something compact and snazzy, which this isn't.'

How would you fit a 14" screen in anything smaller ?
    anything more compact ?
    Perhaps a fold-able screen :-)

1.8kg for a 14" device is very light.

'Snazzy' - did you not look at the pictures or check any reviews before ordering.

Ultrabook - even my pet rabbit knows that is just a marketing term, like adding the word 'Turbo' to things.
    Like turbo boost.

  16. jnm21's avatar
Robo, I'm sorry if I offended you with the idiot term, but what is the definition of idiot? Someone who through inability to read a spec orders a 1.8Kg 14" laptop then slates it for being 14" & 1.8Kg?

Maybe you should go to ebay, but a "boat with a hole" that states faulty/non-working & then leave negative feedback when it sinks? At least then those of us who ordered this in full possession of the facts may get what they ordered in a timely fashion!

As for the folding screen option suggested by Nesima - classic - LMAO! I wonder if anyone has called HP to ask if they have it in stock in lieu of the non-ultrabook that they refused delivery of?

Right been to Currys had a fondle, poke and twist of the 14-b005sa at £470.
The only difference is the main one in this thread has 2Gb more RAM.

Good screen, nice keyboard, a fairly solid slab of metallic speckled black
plastic, hinges seemed pretty strong to me, did not move when I twisted the
screen. The screen has a little flex but it is very thin.

Windows 8, I think I will like it.

    What I didn't like:
    1. No easy access panels on the bottom side, I think you will have to take the
whole bottom off to upgrade the RAM, HDD etc.
    2. The disk access light appears to be on the right hand side where you cannot
see it without having to specifically look.
No connections or card slots on the front, also none on the back.
    3. The USB 3 connections x 2 on the right-hand side were not blue, I thought
    being blue was standard ?

For £340 it is a bargain, 14" screen and less than 2kg means it is a practical and
very usable ultra portable machine, I don't think it weighs much more than my
Samsung NC10 with the 4/6 cell battery (the biggest).

Nice little ASUS next to it for a bit more money with a metal finish.
But only a 11" screen, so less usable but more portable.

For Those wishing install fresh windows 8 without the crappy HP customisations

    follow these steps

enter you USB flash where the drivers are you downloaded and then select load drivers
the drivers are in the folder

    Sorry, £350 before

No problem Well at that price it's probably worth considering:

    > Pavilion Ultrabook™ 14-b006sa and 14-b003sa (The ones in the title of this deal) - At £339 and £314 respectively, both probably offer the best bang for your buck overall as far as the internal specs are concerned.

    > Pavilion Sleekbook 15-b053sa - Slightly over your budget at £381 but it has an Ivy bridge i5 processor, bluetooth, and a slightly larger screen. However slightly less RAM and no SSD.

    > ENVY Sleekbook 6-1125ea - £339 like the one in the title, however it has more RAM, better graphics (slightly), better keyboard, trackpad, build quality, design, speakers, Bluetooth, WiDi, dual array microphone, packs Beats™ Audio and comes with Microsoft® Office Starter. On the downside though it has a slightly slower AMD processor (still good for everyday computing though, and is actually faster in some cases), it also has no SSD, meaning boot time will be a little slower and the laptop may generally feel less quick to respond.

    > ENVY Ultrabook 4-1010sa - Slightly over budget at £365, but offers almost all the bonuses of the ENVY Sleekbook above (minus the better graphics and more RAM), but also packs an SSD, and a 2nd gen i3 processor which is ever-so slightly faster than the AMD in the Sleekbook, however ever-so slightly less fast than the 3rd gen i3 in the first one (from the title). Unfortunately it also has the worst graphics of the lot.

All of the laptops above are an absolute steal at their respective prices, now it's just down to which one suits your needs best.

    Hope that helped!

Thanks for a mature and balanced review.
People need to remember they are judging and assessing a £340 device, something that is a tool
that will get used, not a Rolls Royce ASUS Zen Buddha slab of genius or a vastly overpriced ASUS
wanabee GayBook Air with deliberately built in design flaws to extract more money from sheep.

So the question is is it worth £340, is it sturdy enough to survive a couple of years of usage.

Basically a load of people got suckered in by the word "Ultrabook" which … Basically a load of people got suckered in by the word "Ultrabook" which got the deal going, then as the temp rose, people just voted hot without looking over the specs properly, namely a 1.8kg weight. Ultrabook guideline dictates a maximum weight of 1.5Kg, that's the maximum, not the average.Unfortunately since there is no law regarding the term and it is simply a made up load of rubbish by Intel, manufacturers have exploited the terms to unthinkable limits, as is the case here with this LAPTOP. It's no ultrabook and it's nothing special.Unfortunately again, we now have hundreds of ignorant people defending their purchasing decision.I would hazard a guess that since the OP mentioned spending 20 hours looking for the best one to get for his niece that also added a few hot votes.Even I voted it hot and bought one because the cashback was allegedly going to be running out very soon. Immediately after ordering I asked myself why I bothered.Still, it was a mistake and lots of people have happily been suckered into this. It's not fit for purpose really, as I posted a page or so back. I already have a laptop that's basically this spec that cost me £280 2 years ago, that WAS a bargain. 2 years later and a nicer finish, slight weight reduction, dvd/cd drive taken out it's hardly a deal at all.I'll likely get called an idiot again in a few minutes, such is life.

    I don't see an idiot.

Just a conceited little twerp with a big chip. This comes from a bloke, who having bought a machine is informing all and sundry, he will be refusing delivery when it arrives. That is sick. Nobody asked you to buy it, yet you expect a company to pack it and deliver it. All for nothing. Hope you get you just desserts for that sort of action. How old are you?? 19 going on 9??

You don't like it, you don't think it's a good deal. Super, great, woo hoo for you.

Why spend so much time dissing people on one thread.

FWIW, I've bought one for my holiday home. People who stay there can use it and for under £300 it's a good price and as good as anything else i've seen in that price range. I researched it against similar machines and am more than happy with the purchase. That doesn't make me ignorant. Or is it, there's a good many idiots on here who don't exactly see a £300 purchase, the be all and end all of their life? I'm sure it's nothing to an all knowing big hitter like yourself. LMFAO at YOU.

The way your going on, some people will be expecting it to give them a free blow job, when they take it out of the box and to be fair, it appears it could be your best chance of getting one. So keep it. I hear it's got a few USB ports ;-)

So a bit of advice. Stop knocking the deal, trot on, have a gander and stick up a deal of your own that's better.

Then all the saddos like you can flock there and sl@g your deal off.

OP.. Well done and thanks for taking the time to post.

Shouldn't need one - Windows 8 comes with built in version of Microsoft Security Essentials - does the job fine with little interruptions and doesnt bloat the system

It is a low voltage CPU, it is not going to have the performance of a full blown laptop CPU.
The Ultrabook has probably taken a personal dislike to you because of your attitude and
is therefore deliberately crashing to wind you up ;-)

And of course you never realised a 14" screen would not fit into a 10" or 11" form factor,
    damned annoying that, bl@@dy HP.

OP here. I took delivery of the Envy dv7-7201sa today.

I have to say it is a thing of real slickness and beauty. Very high build quality. 17.3" of brushed Black aluminium and even an illuminated HP logo on the cover (nice touch). All the LED's are bright White. So, cosmetically it looks very expensive and has a lovely finish.

The 1600x900 display is lovely and really makes a difference in Windows 8. Also, the Beats audio definitely has more deep bass and power than your average laptop speakers (it's a 4 speaker setup).

Trackpad on this is first class. Nice and big (which makes gestures in Win8 much more practical) and also the buttons have a definite click to them. Two finger scrolling works an absolute treat.

Just getting used to Windows 8 (and it does take quite some getting used to!). However, I did spot a nice HP utility onboard called "HP Quick Start". I wasn't happy about installing the third-art "Classicshell", so I opted to give Quick start a try and it's great.

Surprisingly, this thing runs virtually silent and the HP coolsense technology really does seem to do a fantastic job of keeping it cool. Had it on for 6 hours now and it is still running cool (not even warm)!

Can't comment on battery life yet as just fully charged it, but it comes with a 6cell battery and 90w adapter combined with Energy smart it should be pretty good.

Overall for a genuine desktop replacement which feels so well put together, for £509 (and potentially £445 after Quidco) I am "chuffed to bits".

Great find OP. Bargains this side of xmas are hard to find but you managed it. Best deal for my needs is the 14" screen HP ENVY Ultrabook™ 4-1101sa at £599. Assuming the 15% code works plus 15% quidco (excl.vat) then it could be as low as £460ish for metal design, gorgeous looks, core i5 cpu, backlit keyboard etc. I'm so tempted.... must resist....

I always use TCB now, usually better rates & by far better CS.

Quidco became a joke in tracking ability.
