8th-gen Core i5-8250U CPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Full HD 14 inch IPS touch display, convertible to tablet mode and compatible with optional HP Pen digitiser.

My daughter's Lenovo Miix 510 (6 months old) has gone wrong for a second time and she is travelling in less than a week and needs to bring Uni graphic art coursework with her so a bit of a desperate search for an 'affordable' replacement as the Lenovo, which is back in Germany for repair, won't be back in time for her travel. Will probably sell it. Ordered a pen with it, which was reduced from £40 to £28 as part of a bundle deal with the laptop. Ordered this morning, only hope it arrives by end of Wednesday as she is travelling on Thursday!

Nice and hot
Hope you mean sell the Lenovo, I have one, it's just over a year old and the worst laptop I've owned.
I paid a similar price for this laptop last year. I’ve been impressed with the build quality and it runs nice and quick. I’d definitely recommended it

Yes, the backlight keeps failing The HP is a budget model, I know, but it packs a punch with the 8th-gen i5 CPU and my daughter's work involves a fair amount of CPU work as her course work involves using 3D animation and video editing. The Lenovo is fine when it works but now the backlight has failed again we've lost faith in it. It has the older generation i5 CPU and the new one is nearly twice as fast on the Passmark benchmarks.

Depends. Spec wise, no, but not by much. Also you posted a 15.6 inch and for some people that's too large to be mobile. Personally I use 13 inch laptops as lighter therefore the HP represents better value for me.

Try and find some reviews. Notebookcheck, I think it's called, is very thorough.

Hmmm - thanks for that. I will make enquiries as this for my daughter at university. Nobody to speak to today though as it's the weekend.
How does this one compare? Has a 3 year guarantee

It's the same model but with a smaller SSD. In my experience 128GB is not enough and my daughter will be storing lots of large graphics and video files. Oddly, the HP specs don't mention any SD Card slots but other variants apparently do have one, so 128GB may be OK if you're happy to supplement this, if required, with a large SD Card, though performance will be lower and a 128GB SD Card is going to use up most of your £50 saving. The extra two years warranty is nice but again in my experience once you get past the first year most things that will go wrong that would be covered by a warranty would already have happened.

Is the student store only for college students or is it for school children as well. How does one get student discount. Looking at one for my child in school

You will need to have an education email address at the very least I would expect. I think school teaching staff are included.
How easy is to clean the fan? I've got an old Samsung i7-4th gen that I use for graphic design and this looks like an ideal replacement!

So I managed to get the student discount for my daughter in the end so thanks for this. The HP Store chap was very helpful and although He could not stop the original order being shipped he arranged for my daughter's order to be completed in time so both orders arrived today with the courier, who had instructions only to let me sign for the student discount one I did of course have to pay twice but I will be refunded for the first order.

It's charging up at the moment and looks really nice if you're OK with a light silver external finish.

There is a fan outlet along the left side of the base (when viewed from the front). You could vac that fairly easily. For anything more direct here is a teardown video:

Ive been told never to vacuum a computer because the static electricity can ruin the components. What about compressed air' is that safe?
Another question: is this compatible with Wacom tablets? Or is the HP Pen just as good?
