How do these compare to the old N40L ?

So much quicker... I went form N40L > N54L > Gen8. Each jump lead to performance increase, everything much snappier. The Gen8 has the bonus of iLO, so you can power down/up, as well as see diagnostic info from a web browser even if the server is off. Well worth the move to one of these !
Cash back isn't guaranteed.

I bought 2 of these from these people months ago, clicked through the quidco site and they still rejected it despite meeting all their t&c.

And they wouldn't say which terms or conditions I supposedly didn't meet

I was wondering that

I've never had a problem claiming the cashback offer from HP before, and there have been a few.

Hmm, maybe time to swap my N40l for a gen 8.
getting another one on pay day hope they still this cheap lol
Nice one, going to upgrade media server from N40L to this. Like the iLo stuff, have to look into it, have managed to put N40L into hibernation and it wakes up 1 a day for Sabnzbd etc.

Using Windows 7 at the moment, is this still the best way to go or should I be looking at NAS software or even going Linux, don't fancy Win10. If staying with Win7 can I just swap my SSD from N40L to Gen 8, or is it just quicker in the long run to install clean?

May need clean install, due to drivers and CPU. I would recommend either Linux or a Media server solution, plenty out there, depending on your needs.
how loud are these systems?
anyone know which of the non branded memory modules can be used in this? Also it states that the DVD drive isnt included, anyone know which generic one to get? Many thanks in advance for all better informed than me answers!
Disadvantage over the previous generation (N36L,N40L,N54L) is that Gen8 requires ECC RAM.

No cheap 8Gb upgrades

Deffo recommend Kubuntu if you want an OS or XPENOLOGY if you want a NAS

You can find the official parts/specs on HP Partsurfer (partsurfer.hpe.com/Sea…spx?searchText=819185-421) and then shop around for the equivalent item. 4GB (1x4GB) Single Rank x4 - PC3-12800E (DDR3-1600) Unbuffered CAS-11. NB The server does not support non-ECC memory modules.

Any good as a media center? Server grade status aside.
Got the N54L before this one running WHS2011 and over weekend installed win 8 pro which upgraded to 8.1 pro and then upto win 10pro and runs no issues and speed isn't a problem. Now to adjust win10pro to run as a server.
Tempted to upgrade but seeing the improvement I think miss this one this time round.
Heat added.
Is this any good for kodi?

They aren't loud at all, they run quite quietly. I have two of them, one which runs 24x7 in my home office and it causes no problem at all.
Excellent deal, although I barely did anything with the N54L I bought, so need to try and get this up and running.

Yes, but if all you need to do is stream then it's not necessary to get something like this.

Comes with double the ram as standard though (4GB) , faster, has iLO and USB3

I, and 2 other people I know, went through Quidco for the N54L and all of us got rejected for the cashback. 2 others I know went through TCB and got the cashback no problem. All of us bought through Ebuyer. Don't know if that tells you anything or not, maybe there is an issue between Ebuyer and Quidco. This is the Quidco/TCB cashback I'm talking about, not the HP cashback, we all got that.

Officially, did the N54L not require ECC RAM too but, in reality, could actually use non-ECC? Maybe this one is the same and can also use non-ECC, or maybe not, I haven't checked - google is your friend here.

Does it have the advanced iLO (allows full remote console even in the OS) or is it limited to the basic iLO that just allows control of the hardware and watching the boot process etc?

what adjustments do you make to windows? plex? nzb?
How noisy is the fan on this? Couldn't stand the n54l's fan.
Got an N40L running Xpenology, was thinking about upgrading to one of these last time round.

Wife will kill me :-)
ordered thx:)
Anyone got Windows 10 running on this?
Got one of these last time round and it's been brilliant. Set it up running Windows Server 2012 R2 and have Xpenology running inside a VM. All works flawlessly.
What is it like as a plex server? Can it run multiple streams at a time?

Depends on the file format and the client, my N40l runs several happily (9 on last night) but I re-encoded them to direct play rather than transcode.

I replaced both fans on my N54L (one in the back, one in the power supply) and it's much better. Might consider an upgrade, but don't want to have to go through that process again. Trouble is, one person's "quiet" is another person's "way too loud".
Hi, Is it better to buy from server plus or Ebuyer?
please forgive my ignorance, I looking for a cheep option to play minecraft at an acceptable frame rate.
could you install a dedicated graphics card in this machine ?
many thanks in advance.
