please note that this unit for £213 on Amazon is the 160 gig model that I dont believe is included in the 100 quid cashback (that ended end of Jan I think, different part number to the 250gig model)

I think the only difference is the size of the hard drive and the fact that this model has £100 cashback for this part number 633724-421 currently
I missed out getting the 160 gig version late last year, there were deals for this model for about £110 with the cashback (160gig version 612275-421) I would be very wary trying to get the 160 gig version and trying to claim cash rebate from HP

Cashback form specifically mentions the model number so that the £100 cashback is only valid on the newer 250Gb model. Also 160Gb was end of life, so suprising to see it still around! This is an awesome machine. For ages I tried different NAS devices and found the newer ones were always quicker, but this will beat any NAS for speed and functionality (depending on software)! Install Windows Home server or some free linux software and you will have a great home server with very low power usage! Good forum for this "Good Cheap Server" online where people have tried some of the many options!

I purchased for exactly this very purpose and to run Squeezecenter. Initially thought the processor wasnt all that (1.4 ghz) but after bit of reading found out that its supposed to be faster than Atom 330 which I was going to build to make a NAS. For novices out there, please note unlike an off the shelf NAS you will need to put a OS on it

Can anyone confirm if this can take non-ECC ram or only ECC ram? Will get rather pricey if you need to bump up it up with ECC...

There were a few ram deals on previous deals with this... Also that forum I mentioned online talks about ram.

Powerwise, I would guess this would only use a little more. CPU is 15Watt I think, so without usage should be almost as low, and then peak higher depending on how many and what HDD you use.
FreeNAS is supposed to be great, but again, the forum I mentioned has other alternatives that seem to be giving better transfer speeds.

Also, I myself bought one of these and can confirm it is not just for business use... just write N/A under company name in form!

Answers based on my 2 x 160Gb Microservers plus previous threads:

the 250Gb model has the larger disk and supposedly a more efficient power supply

if the motherboard is the same as the 160Gb model , it will take non-ECC RAM - I've got a 160Gb model running 4Gb (2 x 2Gb) of Play RAM with no problem

company name on claim form is irrelevant - I left it blank and received £100 cheques for both mine

They do have different part numbers so part number or specifications are wrong on amazon. Also sold by lambdatek on amazon and they have the newer model at 250 on their site, so something seems wrong.

I'm running standalone Debian on one of mine for things where I don't want to share the CPU. Also as a backup (rsync) to the FreeNAS server on the other one.

On the other I'm running Vmware ESXi with virtual machines of: FreeNAS, Torrent Client, Music Server (php/MySQL), Smoothwall - all running simultaneously with no problem.

So work out your needs and consider these have 1.4Ghz dual-core CPUs.

I measured 40 watts with 4 x HDD installed

I think the Amazon one is for a different model. Although the SKU is correct (633724-421) the listed HDD is only 160GB. I think Amazon have made a mistake with their listing.

I bought one of the 160gb ones back in the december offer. I bought windows home server and some of the 2tb samsung spinpoints that keep popping up on here and its been a fantastic addition to my home network. Full automated backup of all computer, media streaming as well as access to my files and compters when I'm away from home. The unit is quiet and rock solid, its just been sat there for 2 months now doing its thing. Would definatly reccomend. Have some heat!

Yes it does and ESXI works as well i have tested it.

This is tempting as I'd like to dabble with an MS Server of some kind. Only thing is that I've bought a few copies of Windows 7 Home Premium but it seems that they wouldn't be able to join the MS Server Domain. Anybody know if this is correct?

Did you get a confirmation? I got a confirmation email from HP a week after sending in the claim form -- that was a couple days ago. Based on that, and with it being a reputable company, I'm quite sure I'll be getting the cheque soon -- but if you didn't get a confirmation, I'd suggest you chase it!
