Why Go Green with HSBC?
HSBC is committed to finding ways of reducing its impact on the environment through saving paper and the energy used to produce, transport and dispose of it. Going Green means you can do all your day-to-day banking as normal and we'll avoid using unnecessary paper wherever we can.

Going Green means
*No paper statements - your statements and charges summaries will be delivered electronically via Internet Banking.
*Fewer letters to open - we will call or email you for service reasons wherever possible rather than write to you.
*No cheque book or paying-in book for your current account.
*No paper-based marketing.

So, we save HSBC a small fortune in statements, letters, cheque-book and paying-in book and they give you a one-off £5! Wahoooooo!!!!

I knew they would eventually give a financial incentive to do this, all be it small....done :w00t:

Thanks for the heads up

I think this is an awful idea .... no cheques??

How on earth do you pay someone who doesnt accept cards - ie the service charge on my flat can be paid by cheque only.

That means needing to get HSBC to write you a cheque - for £10 a time if i recall correctly!

Also if you need a paper statement for proof (as is often asked) then your stuck as well!

Agreed. Not a hot deal - luke warm perhaps, but no more. They are saving more than £5.00 - and should return at least double this amount.

I tried this the last time they offered it...but my poverty spec account "didnt apply"

Just realised the £5 is a one off payment - absolutely no win for £5!!

Surely nobody would lose their cheque book for the sake of £5? I nearly did it a while back but didn't when I realised that requirement.

That is a good point, I write one cheque per year for ground rent.

Businesses that still only accept cheques should bring themselves up to date rather than force everyone to continue using them.

It's not just businesses though, plenty of purchases still require cheques, even my gite rental last year in France was paid for by cheque, as what the damage deposit. It's just normal in so many purchases.

Excellent post. Hadn't thought of those issues until you pointed them out. The paper statement proof is a big issue for me.

Just looking through my cheque book and apart from ground rent I wrote a couple of cheques 3 years ago for kids school trips.

Still have Nationwide, Barclays and A & L cheque books so it's not a major problem

For people like me, who dont ever write cheques out and who do all their banking online it suits me perfect to do this might aswell have a fiver out of it aswll.

May not suit some people i understand this but no need to slate it!

A lot of Building Societies still insist on a cheque to open new accounts, so a big NO NO for me.

I've just spoken with HSBC's indian hotline to clarify these issues

1. If you use a lot of cheques don't go green but if like me you only use the odd one then even after you go green you can continue to use your current cheque book until you run out (as I have about 12 cheques left so should last for next 12 years!).

2. Anyone requiring a copy statement can either print off online or ring up and request one, it will be provided free of charge for transactions within the last 12 months and beyond 12 months a £1 charge will apply.

Just remembered - the HSBC Indian hot line is often pretty slow and useless (changed my current account after decades with HSBC because of this). Definitely a cold deal. Very cold. A real rip off, I think. Still the idea is right - just not the implementation and the cashback offered is far too little.

This deal has been around ages, I left them feedback saying I wasn't prepared to lose my chequebook for the sake of £5 but they could stop sending me paper statements if they liked as I have to shred them and I always check online. But obviously "computer said no" and I still receive my statements every month and they go straight in the shredder.

I don't see why paper statements are linked to cheques anyway ??

Cold from me.

If anyone does decide to go for this order yourself a new cheque book first.

Manishankar did say that if you still need cheques they may still be able to provide them for you but it would be at the discretion of your local branch.

According to T & C's this offer expires on 25th January

@ Johnboy_1975 - Same for me with the statements, they don't tell me anything about my account that I don't already know and end up in the shredder with the rest of the junk mail.

For anyone in this situation (me included) you can still stop your paper statements without going 'green'. Log into internet banking and on one of the links on the left hand side (edit preferences or something like that - can't get on atm to check sorry), you can choose your delivery options for each account, one of which being online, no paper statements. I've enabled it on all my accounts so will still get the cheque book but without any statements through the post

Hope this helps.

^^^

That's exactly the sort of useful thing I was hoping the helpdesk people would have mailed me back after I left them feedback.

Cheers

a cheque can be written on anything, don't forget, and as long as it has all the information on, is still legal
