If you have a pay as you go sim with credit on you can go instore and get it for £249.99 as a pay as you go upgrade knocking £50 off the instore price. They said i could pick the white Desire if I wanted and it does not matter what network you pick. (they also confirmed they are all unlocked anyway)

this needs a £10 top up added to the price not unless you already have a payg sim then you can have it as an upgrade, the card will need to have some credit on it as they will need to make a phone call from the phone to register it. at least that is what happened to me a few days ago when i got a wildfire from them in store. heat added as either way it is a very good deal for an unlocked and unbranded phone

Great price for the phone, might be worth adding that the price is only for an O2 handset the other carriers are £299.99. + £10 topup.

Hot!

nice find, thanks.

Are you sure it comes unlocked?

All Phones4U phones come unlocked.

Yes, that makes their prizing strategy... odd.

There is £6.50 cashback available from qudico, this just leaves a balance of £3.50 on the madatory £10 top-up, for those of us without a payg sim to pop in it!

I have this fone and think it's fantastic.

I have this phone and it's amazing, apart from the battery life. Best phone from htc in ages.

oled or tft screen?

yes

Were these not on sale from o2 a long time ago at £180?

I have this phone, paid about £15 more for it brand new off ebay last year, and it's fantastic I couldn't recommend it more although it's one flaw is slighhtly crappy battery life.

The battery is ok if you dont spend all day playing with it, but the phone can do sooooo much, you're bound to spend all day on it!

Thats probably the HTC Wildfire that was on sale for £180.. Its a very similar looking phone... The Desire has never been £180 on payg or sim free

This phone is amazing and well worth the price.
Camera and video are good.
You get a flash on it and it can play flash video, all youtube etc, unlike the iphone.
The market place app store is good too.
If you get advanced task killer free from the market place and use it to kill background apps now and again the battery is no problem either.
Amazing phone

If you don't mind a increasing the bulk slightly:

is the only difference between this and the desire hd the screen?

FWIW I also have this phone and it's the best damn phone I've ever had (yeah, I know that's a cliche but it's also true) and I've had some experience in phones.

RE battery life - yeah, I usually charge every day, but I spend a hell of a lot of time web browsing (over 3G, WiFi), reading books, playing sudoku/kakuro and making calls. If I only make calls the battery lasts about three days. I was a little unhappy about battery life to begin with but that's only because I didn't use my previous smartphones as much as I use this phone - if I did then their battery would last just as long I reckon.

RE screen - can't say if this offer is for AMOLED or SuperLCD but when I got mine it was just the start of the AMOLED shortage - since then it is my understanding that HTC switched to SuperLCD permanently for the Desire, but don;t quote me on that.

Screen size is one difference. Others include:
8MP Camera with dual LED flash,
720p recording,
576MB of RAM while the HD has 768MB

and I think I read somewhere that although both phones have a 1ghz snapdragon processor the HD is a newer version that requires less battery power.

I have the Desire HD... The wife hasd the hero but she's going to get this.

Prob the best phone currently on the market. At least until the tegra 2 phones come out

If its anything like the HTC Hero I would avoid

Let's face it, a smartphone probably isn't going to be a person's first mobile-phone purchase in their lives; so they're probably used to longer battery-life (I'm still getting 3+ weeks on my works Nokia 6310 - I love that phone, I've rejected their "upgrades").

Battery-life is the price of a smartphone, whether it's a Desire / Galaxy S / Nexus or the iPhone it doesn't matter; you'll be reaching for a charger every couple of days - which can be slightly worrying at first. You've just got to realise that you're not carrying a phone any more, it's basically a mini-computer. When you think along those lines, it starts to be less of a concern - well, it did for me anyway.

This is probably a stupid question but what would happen if you used an orange Blackberry sim (which has unlimited data) in this phone? Would orange know and charge loads for data because it isn't a Blackberry?

Forget every couple of days......had the iphone 3GS and now the HTC Wildfire and I'm charging at least once a day sometimes more.

Just out of interest what program do you use to read books? I have a few in PDF format and read using the official Adobe PDF reader foir Android and reflow mode which is great but it has a habit of forgetting where I am when I exit so each time I go back I have to find the page again. I have excluded this from advanced task killer but it still forgets my page. Wondered if you had found a better program?

Expect other retailers to come in line, especially as the Desire 2 is being unveiled @ MWC in a week. HTC Pyramid out in a couple of months too which replaces the Desire HD and has dual-core.

Fair point. Everyones millage will vary depending on usage I guess, but I can only speak from my own experience.

What decent custom roms are about for this?

just to let everyone know i got one on a o2 contract and its comes locked but o2 unlocked it for free..£15 for pay as you go....

Keep one thing in mind on feb 13th HTC launching a bunch of new phones along with it's successor HTC Desire 2, Samsung also launching Galaxy S 2, just hold your money until then.
