Spotted in my local store in Halifax.
HTC Desire on Pay As You Go only £179.99 plus £10 top up. They had the black one on display but was told thay if they have the brown ones in stock, they're also the same price.
Possible discount for existing customers or NHS workers, but I'm not sure with this one so if somebody will confirm I'll update the price.

edit:

1. Deanoaka: PERK Discount available for a lot of companies, as long as you take your last payslip. Emergency Services, Council Workers, NHS etc - £20 off

2. Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Desire is ready for download from HTC's website.

3. Be aware that the ^ 2.3 Gingerbread update on the HTC Website will remove the ability to root the phone, and applying the update cannot be reversed. So ultimately, if you do the update, you are stuck on 2.3 GB and cannot root. I would advise rooting, then just using a custom version of that HTC update from XDA instead.

Good deal, but waiting for LG Optimus 2X to drop to similar price in next 3 month or so.

Not bad but a 2yr old phone now, should be cheaper....

what's this "PERK" business ??

It's just what they call the discount offered to different companies when you buy a phone in store. 25% off contracts in store, and £20 off any PAYG over £30 currently. About 2000 companies on the list, as I said, most people who use it are from the public service sector, as listed above. Loads of other companies on there, like Shell, Morrison's, Asda etc. Just go in and ask, IN STORE only

wow really ?
i googled but can't see an obvious site, where do i find info / a list of folk who do it ?

Still a great handset though and a better phone than the other Android PAYG handsets in this price range. Root it then throw a decent homebrew Gingerbread rom on and it will look and feel just like current Gen HTC's... InsertCoin v1.08 is a good fast and stable one. grab it from XDADev site....

Yes really! There is nothing online about the deal, it's an in store only promotion. Just go in and ask if the company who you work for is on the list. If you know someone who does work for someone on the list, bring them in with you when you sign up/buy and you still get the discount, as long as they bring a payslip.

You can have up to 5 PERK discounts under the 1 customer name at any one time.

Bad phone due to limited internal memory. If you like installing applications then either root and install a different software version, or get a phone with higher internal memory.

I understand that this discount is being dropped from the end of this month (more penny pinching from Orange). Don't know if the shop staff know yet, they do tend to be treated like mushrooms. . .

Please, don't offend the mushrooms.
I remember some time ago going to one of the stores to ask for a symbian phone:

Lady form the store: (Seeing me browsing through the displayed handsets) Hello, can I help you with anything?
Me: Hi. I'm looking for a symbian phone.
Lady: Do you mean sat-nav?
Me: No, I mean symbian... an operating system.
Lady: All our phones come with a software CD included in the box.
Me: OK, thank you, you were verry helpful.

Were not all like that

It was originally 10% on contracts and the same price for PAYG, but we haven't heard anything other then the current price. It was originally due to stop in June, but it's continued, and long may it

You can update to 2.3 from HTC website, it doesn't solve the infuriating internal memory problem but frees up about 50mb, but you lose your warranty and my tethering app doesn't work anymore ! Wish I hadn't done that

Why would you lose your warranty? It's an official update from HTC. And what app do you use for tethering? Is the stock tethering feature in settings workin fine?

it is an unsupported release. Only available from the HTC Developers portal. to be honest if your going to go the 2.3 route then jst root it and get a Rom from elsewhere as there are much better 2.3 rom's available than HTC's one....

The price of this has really fallen since the release of the sensation.

I love my desire, it is such a solid phone. Running Leedroid 2.3, which runs so sweet.

Can this be unlocked easily?

Is there an easy way to remove the horrible Orange software? Not sure why Orange insist on crippling phones with their own software branding, seems odd. I moved to O2 for this reason. I have the Desire and its a great phone, but the loudspeaker on the back isn't too good, very distorted

Yes, root then flash a stock HTC firmware, use unrevoked to root it's ridiculously easy to do. Even installs CWM recovery for you.

Knew someone would say that, just the one exception in the field
But then the value depends on what someone is willing to pay.....
I have never owned an Apple product in my life and I almost went for hte iphone 4 when it first came out but cancelled my order.....

If you root then does that unlock it?

No, rooting is gaining access to the system files which are normally locked.... Basically like a windows file on your computer that is read only....

It doesn't, but there is definitely a free unlock available on the xda developers forum.

Used it myself and can confirm that it works.

i have 2.2 and the tethering app has never worked.

Have read lots of info on rooting and need to go this way, but there are some parts i dont understand, dont want to make a fool of myself on a techie forum. phone is hilted right now due to the internal memory, shame as its a great phone other than this.

Can you tell me if the goldcard needs to be created on a separate card to the one used in the phone? I was advised to partition my sd card then create a goldcard which i have done, but the rooting never worked. If i try again do i have to recreate the goldcard?

Whoever told you that you needed a goldcard was talking out of their a**e, that was the way the Desire was originally rooted over a year ago. It's very complicated and a bit temperamental from what I understand. Nowadays you just need the modified USB Drivers installed on your computer (windows only, I don't know and don't care about Mac OSX), and a one click root program called Unrevoked which actually does the rooting and installing CWM for you. Try having a watch of this video, it's how I rooted my Desire:
