After seeing the recent Android phone post by 'lookingforadeal' I thought I would put this offer out there as I feel it is a good deal and can be easily unlocked. I purchased this HTC Hero (from the link provided) myself and have owned it for about a week now and have to say I love it! It took some getting used to it but now I've got it sussed I can't put it down!

The phone is refurbished but comes with 12months warranty. The handset I received was literally in brand new condition, not even the slightest scratch/mark on it.

£12 cashback also available at Quidco, bringing total possible cost to 147.99. (Thanks and credit to Zurich)

The cheapest place online I can find it new is here: handtec.co.uk/pro…te- (£280)

How this compare with the new offering from Orange (San Fransisco??) ?

You know I love my HTC Hero and I reckon it's a great phone but if you want a budget phone then at £109 I'd have to say I would probably buy the Orange San Francisco over this. It's about two thirds of the price, slightly bigger screen (3.5" vs 3.2" ), higher screen resolution (800x480 vs 480x320) etc etc. I'm depressed I want a budget entry level phone more than my own now.

Better camera (5MP), more memory, Quad Band rather than Tri-Band. Not really a techie sorry! They are very similar phones specification wise. Hero is IMO, better looking but that boils down to personal preference. Also, the Hero has excellent reviews whereas reviews for the San Francisco are scarce.

Both phones, I'm sure, are excellent handsets and Android is continuing to grow and evolve.

Hope that helps

Btw Gr1zz1y89 don't let me put off your new phone I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot but... if your feeling brave you can find instructions on how to root your HTC Hero and flash it with FroydVillain (Android 2.2 Froyo) at the link below. It's not Sense but stock android with Launcher Pro. I've only being using it for about a week but it makes for a nice change of UI if you get bored of Sense and of course you get the 2.2 features (well some of them).

Just make sure you read all the instructions and comments before you start.

Thanks Kopparberger, I'm really interested in 'rooting' but slightly nervous at the same time! How does the UI differ?

i love my hero, even more so with 2.1 over the 1.5

has been posted previously but a wee while ago - loving mine.

op, you might want to add topcashback and quidco give £12 cashback on all payg including this.

Zurich - just seen the previous post of this after altering search. I'll add the cashback details now. Thanks for the advice

I bought this a few months ago at this price

I'm thinking about buying this for my daughter, she's currently on o2 PAYG.How easy is it to unlock these? I suspect she would want to remain on o2,so is it just a case of getting a data bolt on?

Hi Ben7. It is very easy to unlock the HTC Hero, the link provided below will unlock the HTC Hero to accept any network in the world. They send you a code with very simple instructions. Voila! The price of this service is around £6.

Unlock Link

Alternatively, visit a phone shop in your local town and they should be able to unlock it for you at the cost of about £15.

As for the data bolt on, I have turned mobile internet off on my handset. I have WIFI at my flat/uni/back home so don't really need it. If your daughter does require a data bolt on for 02, you can get unlimited internet for £7.50 per month.

Thanks for your mention of the Orange San Fransisco, I was gonna buy a HTC Hero (hence looking at this thread) but on your recommendation I researched the San Fransisco and have just bought one, your right it looks an incredible phone if you consider it's only £99!! Thanks again.
