Google 'O2 unlock form' and it will all become clear.
really disappointed with the M9 design, basically look the same like M8 with upgraded camera. I was quite excited to see some leaked photos online, unfortunately they were not real. It's a shame that HTC is being lazy, they were doing so well last year, now I might have to choose Samsung S6 instead, or wait for LG G4.

Show me where I can get an M8 new for under 300 right now and we'll pretend you know what you're talking about.

It's because the M9 is not as good as the S6, and in some ways it's actually worse than the M8.

Anandtech weren't particularly kind to the M9 in their review. They criticize it for regressing in display quality, with colour accuracy, brightness and viewing angles being better on the M8. Battery life in all scenarios is also better on the M8.

The camera is apparently quite poor for a high end smartphone, with low light images being much worse than the shots taken with the M8. Almost every review published today (Engadget, The Verge, PhoneArena, Pocketnow, Trusted Reviews) has issues with poor main camera image quality, and reduced display quality over the M8.

It might be better to get an M8 for a significantly cheaper price, or get the S6 if you have a silly amount of money.

each to their own... but these phones will be on offer soon... only android I have seen hold value is the note 4 and that that recently has started to fall after 5 months

I comment as an ex htc m7, note 3 and current note 4 owner... with only the latter I have bought post launch date
How is it then only £20 a month instead of £48?

It's not. You cancel the airtime and pay the handset cost in full, which is £489.99

So in short, you can't buy a brand new HTC One M8 for under £300. Best price I have found on line for the unlocked/sim free version (which you need to get the official 5.01 update) is £345 on amazon (from a prime seller).

This is a decent enough deal for a network version of the M9 but HTC have a track record of giving their updates to the sim free/unlocked phones as their priority - network version often have to wait a while and come with additional bloatware. Plus in this case you have the hassle of cancelling the contract, going through a credit check etc etc.

Personally I am likely get an M8 next week when the M9 officially launches, I think that *then* you will start to see places clearing stocks of the M8 for £299 or similar, but we're not at that point yet.

All the new phones this year have been very disappointing. The S6 is like the iPhone 4 and S3 have had a baby (eww its fugly), the new LG will still have those daft buttons on the back rather than the side. If (like me) you don't particularly want a Huawei/Oppo/other_random_china_phone then you are out of luck this time around.

Fingers crossed Google will release a new Nexus 5 type device later this year..

Some reviews cite the new camera as a step back. It's an overall poor effort from HTC.

Well the old camera is now on the front so it isn't a step back, it got put where it should have been all along.

The problem with the rear camera is the software sucks, but HTCs camera software always does suck.

The sensor is good though, it's a Toshiba 1/2.4 and arguably the best sensor on the Android market.

Anandtech's review see's the One M9 a flagship phone of 2015 as a regression rather than a progression. This is quite a damning report/review of this phone.

anandtech.com/sho…t-1

This conclusion really sums it up:

"Although we’re still missing some of the pieces, based upon what data we have the One M9 is in an alarming place for a new smartphone. It’s pretty rare that a new phone ends up regressing in almost every major way compared to an old phone, but the One M9 ends up doing this in display and battery life. The SoC is better, but I can’t help but feel that Snapdragon 805 ends up being a better choice than Snapdragon 810 for a flagship smartphone at this time. The Snapdragon 808 may be better suited as an upgrade to the Snapdragon 805, but given the performance of the 810 I’m not really holding my breath. Given all of these issues, I’m almost tempted to point to the One M8 as the better phone, but until we get the full picture we won’t be coming to any final conclusions about the One M9."

It's also an unsettling report of a SOC the Snapdragon 810, any phone that uses this SOC will have to throttle its performance via software for it to work. Wait for the 820 is the view of Anandtech.

The S6 beats the M9 >

xda-developers.com/ben…ed/

Those sites are respected sites, Anandtech known for in depth technical reviews of hardware for around 20 years. XDA Developers the de facto standard place to go for in depth technical analysis/review and custom software for smartphones.

There's no doubt in my mind and from reviews that know what they're talking about, the One M9 is a fail.

whats mental is how this phone actually ended up being worse than it's predecessor, like, i honestly dont think i've ever know such a thing. The M7 was beautiful and almost perfect size but lacked decent Battery and Micro SD. The M8 was a bit too big but had good battery and micro sd. The M9 has crap battery, hasn't improved on the design and actually has a worse camera if reports are to be believed. Literally staggered at how a firm can get it so so so wrong... (for the record I owned an m7 for 14 months and an m8 for about 10... now rocking a z3 compact, which as a phone isnt as premium as an htc but dear god does that battery run and run and run ....

Illogical, it's obvious 2014 flagships are better than this phone, and they already exist at a price far lower than this phone.
I really like the gold accents and design. I just am disappointed by the reported battery life and inadequate camera, two big issues. That said, the S6 is no good for me either with its several omissions. This deal itself for the m9 is good, but I think I'm not bothering to upgrade at all ...

Better is subjective. For me at the end of the day it's user experience. I don't care about benchmarks, camera quality. Fair enough many do, I don't. I would have gone for the M8, however the dimensions and the feel in the hand were all off. The dimensions for this appear better, it appears more snappier than the S6 or the Z3 in day to day activities, even with the optimised TouchWiz.

Also, microSD card

Let me get this right?

Anandtech's conclusion on the M9 is they are not coming to a conclusion yet.

That's the best thing I've heard all week.
Why buy this bezel happy phone when you can buy the beautiful galaxy s6 edge
How much better is the M9 over the M8 and, Samsung S5 Sony Z3? These are the handsets I'm mulling over for an upgrade as they are significantly cheaper than the M9. Any advice would be great.

Anandtech and XDA Developers have already stated major failings with the One M9. If you or anyone really want the M9 and feel it's right for you then it may be hard for any review to actually change your view. It's human nature to resist alternate opinion and defend your position if you have made up your mind despite any conflicting evidence. The One M9 as it stands is by all accounts no better than it's predecessor as a whole and in some crucial areas actually worse. Does this mean you shouldn't buy it, well it doesn't matter to me, it matters only to you. Do what is right for you.

Read this thread fully, the answers to your question regarding M9 versus M8 have already been stated quite clearly. My main problem with the SGS5 is the quite horrible plastic design, the rest of the phone is quite a power house and has a great camera and display. Check this conclusion on the Z3 and it offers comparison with other phones of its era including the SGS5.

It is dire. I've seen a quote from someone in semiconductors calling it an embarrassment to Japanese engineering as well as Toshiba themselves being embarrassed by it. Why they didn't use the IMX220 is beyond me. Maybe they couldn't afford it.

Where have you seen positive impressions of it?
why is the battery life reportedly so bad? it only had a 1080p screen with 2900 odd Mhp battery
mchu6am4

Good price compared to s6 price!

Doesn't compare to an S6 though, so pointless comparing price.
