Great for use on giffgaff I'd guess with their free data currently.

so this handset isn't locked ?

Whats better this or a San Francisco?

so this handset isn't locked ?

I'd presume it's locked, but giffgaff uses the o2 network.

The Wildfire does have a far superior camera but for apps the SF is better more built for this res - the screen on the SF is excellent if you're after internet browsing - built wise HTC wins.

As always - horses for courses - it depends what you want.

so can the £10 airtime be applied to my existing o2 sim card? i want to keep my number.

Just what my sis needs after losing her phone this week. Seems the white version is cheaper at various retailers. comparemobiledeals.com/mob…-Go is there a reason for this?oO

Also any chance anyone knows whether this is definitely unlocked or unbranded??:)

Also does it have gps for google sat nav capability?

Having owned Orange brand phones before who actually makes this and what support is there for future Android updates?

Wildfire > Orange San Francisco

Because the San Francisco has the most TERRIBLE build quality EVER.

Do you base that observation on personal experience? I've had my San Fran since September and have no complaints about battery life. It's been 35 hours since I took mine off charge and I have 90% battery remaining.

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4_R8TkwT74w/TPC_PxQKBhI/AAAAAAABWn0/OxZ8aTDFQKU/s800/20101127_091406_1084_LR.jpg

I'm running the stock Orange ROM, but have removed the Orange apps and am running it fairly lean, with just the apps I really want/need. I have a plain, black wallpaper and no live widgets. I only enable data and sync when I need to use it. For standby purposes I leave those things turned off. I have checked periodically for rogue apps consuming large chunks of juice and there are none.

If you're going to use the thing for non stop gaming or streaming data then of course battery life will suffer, but that's true of any smartphone. When set up well the San Fran barely sips at the battery. Of course, as with all modern battery tech, battery performance will improve after the battery has been charge cycled a few times.

Hmm... Interesting post.
My missus is going to buy an Android phone (once she sells her N95 on eBay next week). She's looking to me for advice as I bought the HTC Desire Z last week. It rocks but eats battery (see below for more details). I'm not sure whether to get the Wildfire or SF. She just wants to play Angry Birds but I don't think it works on Android 2.1 (i.e. the Wildfire/SF)?

My HTC Desire Z absolutely eats battery power. I am having to charge it up almost twice a day. This is my second one (as the first was faulty). I've disabled live wallpapers and set weather updates to 3hrs (plus got rid of other live widgets) but I still have to charge at least once a day. I installed Advanced Task Killer and System App. Lite, etc but still charging at least once a day!

I looked at getting a San Francisco and came to the same conclusion about build quality. Total piece of junk.

build quality on the san fran is under rated. its a darn solid phone!! and the screen on this is stated in a couple reviews i read as being just too small res for doing android any justice.

will this be unlocked?

Does anybody know if either the Wildfire or SF will run Angry Birds? Or if the OS can be upgraded to 2.2?

As the mobile is probably locked to O2 is there a reliable unlocking service anyone has used? I have read about issues with newer manufactured Wildfire phones not being unlockable for weeks or months.

I’ve got a Wildfire and the camera is utter rubbish. The quality is far below my previous phone, the Sony Ericsson W800i, which has a surprisingly high quality camera for a phone at the time, and still easily surpasses a lot of today’s phones.

Both the SF and Wildfire should be able to play Angry Birds (it runs on my HTC Hero with 2.1), but it can be a bit laggy at times.

Yeah... my mother-in-laws SE W880i controls her PC via bluetooth. Why couldnt they have added that feature to the HTC's as standard? Yeah you could download but then that could be said about a lot of apps.

This may be a good price for this particular device, but:

- The San Francisco is 40 quid cheaper.
- The San Francisco has FIVE times as many pixels on the screen.
- The SF can be unlocked for free (and you can install custom non-Orange firmware)

Seems like a no-brainer to me (unless build quality is so important to you, but you probably have more important things to worry about if you're clumsy enough to drop your phone on the floor all the time!).

As as few people wanted to know: Angry Birds runs fine on my SF (Android 2.1).

I had ATK on my SF but after reading a few posts on the Internet decided to remove it. The logic was that the phone uses more battery power turning the apps on/off than it would do just leving the apps open. The OS is designed to allow the apps to remain open but use the minimal amount of power required.

After removing ATK I found I got much better battery life by dropping the screen brightness down to the minimum and then installing Juice Defender, an application which switches on/off all of the background services as and when required.

Give it a go.

Of all of the phones I've ever had the best camera in my opinion was the Sony Ericsson K800i, which was 3.2MP and had the Xenon flash. It baffles me how you can get to that standard some 4-5 years ago and then you look at what is available now and they seem to have gone backwards!

I can only assume that the reason for phones not coming with a flash now is either down to cost and/or space limitations.

Original Poster

have bought 3 phones from dialaphone over the past few years and they have always come unlocked. the cashback through quidco stated £10 for an O2 PAYG. i realise that dialaphone dont float alot of peoples boats, but the cash back deal was honoured for a previous purchase, and the 3 phone were not locked to any network. hope this helps.

Does anyone know if you can unlock the San Fran and use on other networks other than Orange?

If you're buying to unlock very/marshall ward have it back on vodafone for £129 8% quidco no airtime purchase

Look at post #19. I'm running my San Fran on giffgaff, as the display shows. My unlock cost me £1.85 back in September, but now I believe you can get unlock codes for free. Look at the Modaco site for tons of info on the San Fran, unlocking and a host of other stuff.

EDIT : Link to the Modaco forum for the ZTE Blade, which is the same phone as the Orange San Francisco - android.modaco.com/cat…om/
