Huawei E5220 Mobile Wi-Fi (Vodafone branded R206) with 2GB of data included - £29.99 @ Currys

Got a new tablet for Christmas and needed a way to keep it connected when I'm out and about. Only using it occasionally so I didn't want a contract. After a bit of research I found that this is the cheapest and best value deal out there. Closest equivalent devices on other networks are approx. £20 more expensive. Same device at Argos is £15 more expensive.

Also after a little bit more digging I worked out that the device is actually a Huawei E5220 (for some reason Vodafone rebrand the device to their own model number) and you can't get an unlocked E5220 on Amazon for that cheap.

Even if you just use the included data then unlock the device for 99p this is still a real bargain and it works brilliantly. Does exactly what I need it to.

How can you unlock this for 99p please?

Go onto Ebay and find a reliable seller who supplies unlock codes for the model.

There is a forum which will provide them for free but for 99p it's easier for you to pay or search yourself than me to find out what the site was.

Thanks for the advice.

Bought one of these months back from Argos for £35 i think it was. So yeh hot vote from me. Good device.

Does the credit expire in the same way as 3g dongles?

not voting, just putting in my two bits -- I just got an e5776 from ee for £25, only hitch is it's on a 30 day contract at £13.

However, it's the second time I've done this, and I just phone and cancel the contract. Therefore it's £38 for a 4g mifi plus one month's usage -- then unlock for a couple of quid or so, and I can use the 3 3g sims (currently £2.49 for 1gb/1month) from Currys/PCWorld.

So, this is cheaper (£29.99 vs. £38, but mine was cheaper due to £8.40 TCB). My way I pay a bit more and get 4g capability so won't have to replace my mifi as soon.

But bad news, I just checked .. the same deal i got is now up to £70, so this is more than a heads-up to keep your eyes out because deals come and go.

Does anyone know.... If you got this unlocked and put in the '3' all you can eat data sim for £12.90 per month, if it works?

Yeah same question. Could I use a GiffGaff sim on this with unlimited data?

why bother with this deal, when there's this...

Usually one of two occurrences:
1) you will receive the 3 "block" page informing you that it is against the t&c to tether AYCE data (on the £12.90 plan) and you should consider purchasing a 3 mobile broadband product.
2) as it is not a 3-branded device with an IEMI known to 3, you may be able to flout the AYCE terms and conditions and successfully tether to external devices.
Tethering is usually only permitted within 3's "One Plan" products, although lesser 3 products will normally allow tethering from handsets (not dongle-derived devices) until 3's tethering police attempt to stop it.

Yeah! Forgot about the tethering! Taking that into account, the £15 a month 'one plan' should get round that!? Yes?

NOTE:

Added full r206 manual to OP

Unlock the device and change the settings to allow you choice of connection which is done via a PC using the connection software. I use Ovivo which has 1GB free per month on a similar device I got from ebay.

Useful note on the Amazon site about using Giffgaff
amazon.co.uk/Hua…9OA

"Once I knew there was no problem with the gadget I got on to the Giffgaff website and the FAQs led me to the solution. Because Giffgaff works on the O2 network the automatic response of the machine is to lead you in to O2 not Giffgaff - so you have to change some permissions on the web page which pops up when you plug the gadget in to your laptop. See the Giffgaff website for help with this. It does not take long and is a one off fix which means everything is now great."

Hope this helps the discussion

will this run in Ovivo out of the box

Wow GiffGaff does get a hard sell around here, pity the O2 network it depends on has such poor data coverage.

No. GG doesn't allow tethering, you'd need one of their data sims.

Bought one of these today in store. Mine did not come with 2gb of data. Instead it came loaded with £40 worth of credit. Had to phone up customer service to get a data bundle activated, 3gb for 30 days costs £20 so if I do it again next month I'll have got 6gb instead of the advertised 2gb!

I'm planning on going to America in a few months for a holdiay, I'd want to stay online, so if I took my phone with me and bought one of these could I use the 2gb data over there or is it UK only?

I can't see it being anything other than UK only.

No. It needs unlocking (code from Ebay then connect to computer to enter code). Then you need to change the setting on the computer to Ovivo settings.

The 2GB data from OP item is UK only. Maybe consider some juggle using a 3 PAYG SIM that includes AYCE data - after 30days of SIM registration you can activate roaming to access 3's "Feel at Home" service that provides upto monthly 25GB of data in US as if you were in the UK i.e. no roaming data charges. What hardware you decide to put the 3 SIM is up to you - the AYCED Feel at Home t&c states on-handset-use only, but not sure how the tethering police would be able to enforce this, regardless of device.
Total cost for this option with no on-going monthly commitment would be the £15 All-In-One add-on for upto 30 days when you're in the States, plus whatever it costs to buy & register a 3 PAYG SIM for at least 30 days prior to adding the £15 Add-On. Plus whatever hardware you put the SIM in.

As I said above mine came with £40 credit instead of 2gb of data. It may be possible to use this credit while in the USA but it would probably work out cheaper getting a local sim while you're over there!

One Plan t&c permits tethering in UK. Tethering not permitted if roaming in US with One Plan, but may function.
If you only need upto one month's data roaming in US, maybe just consider the 3 SIM with AYCE data arrangement as previously mentioned - no ongoing commitment and no credit check.

Thanks guys, I'll just get me one of those 3 "feel at home" sims, what a great deal that is! Thanks again.

3's "Feel at Home" is a service benefit, not a service plan. I think any 3 SIM can qualify for "Feel at Home" 30 days after initial SIM use.
"Feel At Home is an additional service that lets you use your UK plan allowance or Add-on allowance to call or text the UK, use data in selected destinations abroad and benefit from lower-than-usual roaming rates. This applies to everyone on our network, whatever plan or tariff you have and whether you're using a phone or Mobile Broadband device. If your plan doesn't include call, text or data allowances, we recommend you buy an Add-on to be able to fully enjoy Feel At Home."

This doesn't have an External Antenna Interface in case thats an issue.

these any good, tempted to get one when we go abroad.

Update on this. It appears to be back down to £25 on a £16 per month 30 day contract. Go thru Quidco however for a £20 cashback making this deal £21 if you cancel after 1 month.

Anyone know of a router like this that also has an ethernet port that they can recomend?

Do you mean something like this?

Thanks but no not really as that doesn't take a sim but requires a broadband dongle to be plugged into the usb port so paying for 2 devices when one should do the job.

They do exist but it seems i'm not going to have the luxury of getting one from a shop, only online.

Looks like the HUAWEI E5151 is the router I need. Seems to be the only model out there that's a 3g modem and has an ethernet port. Not cheap though.

a quick question. Anyone tried if the 2gb data still is available after the device is unlocked?
