Surprised no one else spotted this price drop at Carphone Warehouse (down from £250).

Before the Orange San Francisco fans start, here's why it's worth the extra:

3.8" Screen (800x480 resolution)
800MHz Qualcomm 7230 (Same as HTC Desire Z, full Flash support, huge overclocking potential)
Adreno 205 graphics (Same as Desire HD, Xperia Arc, Xperia Play)
512MB RAM
2GB Internal Storage for Apps
5MP Camera with flash
1500mAh Battery
Android 2.2 of out the box
Swype Keyboard pre-installed

The community around this phone is relatively small but it's easily rooted and overclocked, see the XDA forum: forum.xda-developers.com/for…120

Any community reviews?

Tempted, but might wait and see how much the new San francisco replacement will be (think desire HD size screen)

No FM radio.

Edit. It does have an FM radio, apparently. I was going by the 'Features' list on the Carphone Warehouse site. It has red 'X' next to FM radio.

It HAS got an FM radio
Hot from me. I may have even bought it, but lumbered by what I already have !X)

It looks Ugly.......looks very cheap
I have to vote cold.............

If you're willing to pay a bit more is there a better Android than this available? If not I'll probably buy this.

if the lack of decent camera and flash bug you on the sanfran then this is a pretty good alternative imo but for over £70 more ??? hmmmm It's not tempting me. But it is still a decent phone for the price.

Expected someone would mention the ZTE Skate! It only has the inferior Qualcomm 7227 chip with no full Flash support and inferior graphics.

I've done a lot of searching and you've got to spend £240+ for a 2010 model from the big brands. An alternative I was looking at was an Acer Liquid for £176 but it's out of stock and may have been discontinued:

800x480. OSF is only 110g so this is a fair bit heavier.

Exactly what I was trying to convey - I mentioned the Skate but stated this one could be the better option due to the anticipated price of the Skate.

As you say, you need to pay closer to £250 for the likes of HTC Desire etc (however, you can get the Desire for £209 at buymobilephones.net if you don't mind a 'Refurbished' one - classed as 'Refurbished' but guaranteed to be 100% blemish free. Bought one myself a while ago at this price and came brand new).

the adreno 205/qualcomm 7230 is a powerful combo found in htc desire z/hd and sony ericsson play/arc.
my dz is oc to 1.5ghz after rooting and i love it cos keyboard as well. quadrant scores of 2850.
ive heated this for the internals but i have to admit i dont like the look of the handset.
desire at £209 sounds a good buy for a bit more. not sure it is £50 more handset though.

Can this be rooted and turned into a ps3?

Heat added :-)

This is a very under-rated phone. Nobody actually knows how good it actually is. Great price.

much better than the san fran, hot from me!

Can't get better specs than this for the price

1 step up from the san fran

This looks like a quality phone for the price Heat

considering this can be overclocked to 1.4-1.5ghz (and stable) its a great phone for the specs

ZTE SKATE compared to Huawei Ideos X5

gsmarena.com/com…784

Huawei wins ( just) which bodes well for the Price of the Skate when it comes out

COCO

Great price. Very tempted. Also no need to be rooted as doesn't come with all the propriatary crap that the San Fran does.

This market is moving so fast ATM though. Might just hang on a few months.

I am sure Skate will be less than 200, maybe about the same price as this one. But in anyway, OSF was only 80, so these two are twice as expensive. If you gonna pay just for the phone 200, u might as well take a better one on contract.

Am feelin' this. Will tell my sister to consider this over the Desire as her budget is £200. Hot OP!

Whichever gets CM7 support will win me

Looks great and very good value for what you get. Voted hot.

1) Pick Huawei product
2) Try and find technical support for it
3) Raise eyebrow

Specifically, anything in mobile broadband over about a year old, just doesn't seem to exist. Even finding their official website via searches for their products was not obvious. (Ok, it's huawei.com, but... still! )

Apparently wifi hotspot doesn't work on this, despite being a feature of Android 2.2.

Huawei?

Who are they?

Huawei? Who are they?

Didn't they make the Pulse, if I'm not mistaken?

it looks good, but price....:(

I understand huawei are also very hackable with roms, very much like the osf. Hot.

I had a Huawei router provided by Talk Talk, with it being a router they are designed to be left on 24/7, it packed up after 6 months...obviously this is a lot more complicated in an even smaller package but I'm not sure my experiences with them in the past would convince me to purchase something else from them...not yet anyway, wont vote though

There's an update available to enable it: forum.xda-developers.com/sho…238

They make most of the 3G dongles out there + T-Mobile Pulse, Vodafone 845, Vodafone Smart

You may be right, you may not, but determining the product quality from one of the world's largest telecoms companies based on a single failure of a single router is...........statistically meaningless.

Huawei? Who are they?

Extremely large provider of telecoms transmission and network equipment to Telcos and network providers.
It's only really the past year they've started to target the mainstream consumer under their own name, which is why you've probably never heard of them.
I believe their turnover is in the order of $25Bn

Has this 'proper' multitouch, or the usual crap implementation?
