Have you had a look at the lenovo s540 that was posted for under £500? Probably better off with that

Unless I missed the part where this laptop has a dedicated GPU then the lenovo is better as the 3350h is faster

I'm torn now. This, the Lenovo or the magicbook. Used for light gaming through steam, nothing too taxing, together with video calling, general internet browsing and office use. Any suggestion welcome!

Are you fussed about screen resolution and size?
If not then go for the 14 inch Lenovo and up the graphics to suit your budget in the configurator. Then you have a decent machine able to handle some games around 30/35 FPS on low/med. This won't have windows installed at the price point.

Honor - 14 inch screen, great all rounder

Huawei - 15 inch screen, worse screen and battery than the Honor

Lenovo 13 inch - Better screen than them both, better performance, slightly better graphics. If you can get the codes to work however you should be able to get this for about £500 without a code

On paper the lenovo is the best, cheaper, slightly better CPU, 1440p screen and a better battery. None the them will be great for gaming though. Also something to consider is the port selection is fairly limited on the lenovo with it having no hdmi or eithernet port although this can be solved with adapters... Also the lenovo is slightly smaller at 13"

But it does have display port so you can have 2 screens

Thanks. The Lenovo comes down to £485 with the various codes, and lists as having windows 10. Sounds like that might be the best option!

Play around with the configuration options and spec it how you would like it.

Windows 10 if you remove it will take off £110 and you cann then use that on the other specs. You would need to add a win10 when you get it off a usb stick and enter product key which are a few quid off eBay. If you cann be bothered with the hassle.

Which lenovo
Mark72710/04/2020 13:59

S540

Better cooling giving it sustained performance and the processor is a tad better giving the GPU more room to perform. It's not a gaming laptop by any stretch of the imagination, no sub £500 laptop is.

Also vastly better screen

Would need better cooling it’s a 35w processor in the Lenovo as opposed to 15w . batter life May be less. It’s only for kids anyway. May wait for new range of Ryzen to filter through

I can't really say if that's correct or not but I going to say it probably isn't true as Lenovo are a top 3 seller.. sure they might not be the best but still the lenovo deal is tonnes better than this

Please see their own forums and Trust pilot reviews. And i have had first hand experience. Good luck to you if you don't do your research. They are top three seller as they were relatively cheap and flooded the market. But they are highly cynical with their 'sales' - only a few months ago one of their laptops (shown on here) was 649. you go on their website and it's now 1049.

BTW the Sun sells a lot as so do Mcdonalds - doesn't meant it's any good

You think other companies don't see cheap laptops? Have a looks at Acer or dell and their trust pilot reviews are just as bad. Not saying lenovo are fantastic but certainly not much worse than average of worse at all

Would have to carry around an extra bit of kit unfortunately, but good suggestion.

Mac Soul assessment is definitely worth following here

forget the MagicBooks free watch it’s a red herring, as my brother described it .. a snake in the garden of Eden.

the Lenovo s540 13 has a 2k IPS screen. It’s resolution will be at least 25% better.

the Huawei and Honor magic books aren’t bad deals and are good all round laptops. The Ryzen professor clocks in fairly well. But the screen is full HD but only 250 nits. nits is the brightness rating - for comparison a 2017 MacBook runs upwards of 389. The screens will be nice for daily use but will be a bit dim.

if I was buying, and I’ve considered all 3 to replace my own Lenovo edge (work yoga isn’t bad) and the s540 is the best offering I think.

Fairly good points but have you considered the lenovo idea 5 that was recently posted? If you drop the OS when buying for the same price as the s540 you can get 512gb ssd, 16 GB ram and a 10th gen i5 which completely smokes the ryzen 5/7 in terms of CPU performance?

Have you got the link to that? £485 for the s540 direct from Lenovo was tempting but amazing what you find when you find a pricemark. The 2K screen was a good incentive for me. Only using it for mild use: AO.com had a fairly impressive Huawei for £799 with a stand-alone 2Gb nVidia but where do you stop I’ve been streaming Xbox one which is only as good as the broadband and Ethernet/WiFi etc!

I also couldn’t drop the OS on Lenovo - I’ve got a stand-alone copy on a USB from when I upgraded my HDD to SSD. I’m in the UK rewards store through work so I can stack discounts but can’t seem to edit the Os

The i5 does not smoke they Ryzen. The i7 is faster but when you consider the S540 has better internal cooling (2heatsinks and 2 fans) it will run cooler thus sustaining performance. You'll probably find the i7 will throttle down to Ryzen levels very quickly and potentially lower under load as the IdeaPad does not have the cooling performance of the S540. The Ryzen will sustain its performance better. Specs are not conclusive of real world usage.

Intel chips are known to throttle down quickly as intel allow them to reach a higher temp and then it all boils down to how manufacturers implement thier cooling systems. You have powerful chips these days in smaller chassis. These need to be cooled proficiently to achieve a maintened performance. This is one area manufacturers skimp out. Whacking an i7 in a laptop and selling it looks good on paper but this is where real world usage really needs to be noted.

There are only really incremental improvements here

I'm not saying the IdeaPad is a bad machine at all. Just trying to help so people can make an informed decision
