Preferences vary but as a P30 Pro owner this is still my favourite Huawei of all time, for the following reasons:

Fingerprint reader is capacitive and doesn’t light your room up every time you use it, or constantly flash a position reminder every time you move the phone. It’s also a bit more reliable than the one on my P30 Pro.

You can use the fingerprint scanner for navigation, and to my mind it’s far better than using on-screen gestures once you get used to it.

3X zoom on the P20 Pro is arguably more useful. The telephoto on the P30 Pro is great for bragging but as someone who takes photos of people rather than the moon, it’s just too much zoom for me. You can use 3X zoom on the P30 Pro too, but that’s just digitally cropping the main sensor and not using the actual zoom lens.

Stereo speakers

Notification light (not critical but I do like having one)

Equally good battery life on the P20 Pro compared with the P30 Pro in my experience

More ‘sensible’ form factor

Black and white standalone sensor on the P20 Pro is really nice for taking portrait shots, if you like unleashing your creative side.

How many people care? And that's a genuine question?

Me, personal SIM and Work, would t have a single SIM phone anymore so if this was £19.99 it's no use to me.
Lol when I posted this it was moved as it was too complicated a deal... Hey ho...

For me it's a £300+ saving so unless you wanted to specifically get the P30 Pro it's better value for money to get the P20 Pro, but like you said, everyone had their own preferences.

I was going to get the P20 Pro for myself but headed towards the Mate 20 Pro instead.

I know quite alot have been successful, I have got the Mate 20 Pro and the P20 Pro with no issues and a couple of other people I know have got it.

It's certainly worth a try if you are passing a shop.

I had the Mate 20 Pro too but I really didn’t like that, and recycled it within a few weeks. The only advantage it had was the newer generation processor and wide angle, although it lost the b&w processor in the process. I kind of regretted selling the P20 Pro to get it and ended up buying another P20 Pro
tried on live chat and best they could do is £225 and no other offers online and that would be the cheapest

Don't say that 🙈 I haven't used my Mate 20 Pro yet but I have been in two minds over it, I know I would love the P20 Pro but for an extra £27 it seemed rude not to get the Mate 20 Pro
Not again! Lol

The issues I had with the Mate 20 Pro was that the fingerprint scanner was utter trash and (lit up every time you moved the phone like the P30 Pro). Face unlock was supposed to be as good as the iPhone but *personally* I found it almost unusable. Others have said it’s great though. I also don’t like the insanely curved screen - you can get a normal screen protector for the P20 Pro. I also listen to a lot of podcasts around the house and the semi-stereo speaker setup on the Mate 20 Pro really isn’t a patch on the P20 Pro - it also muffled when I had the phone on charge as - bizarrely- Huawei decided to put the main loudspeaker *inside* the USB C cavity.

If I could get a decent exchange on the P30 Pro I’d be tempted to swap back to the P20 Pro, as it’s not as if it wasn’t fast as hell anyway.

The mate is definitely the better spec out of the 2.
Cant say I love the curved edges, but now it's in a case it's not so bad.
For those in two minds about whether to get the Mate 20 or P20...if it's something you may end up selling, the Mate 20 Pro has better resale value (I just sold my Refresh deal Mate 20 for £350 via FB. Probably could get more for it on Ebay).

As for differences between the phones...I think I'd personally prefer using the P20 (flat screen, normal fingerprint sensor)...but the Kirin 980 is a decent step up, and a wide angle lens is (to me) more useful than the P20's monochrome sensor. The Mate 20 also has expandable storage.

Whichever one you go for...they're all stuck with EMUI - which I find to be a fairly poor alternative to Oxygen OS, stock Android or even MIUI.

Amazing price though - so it's worth investing

Valid point about speaker in USB port. Stupid idea. I don't tend to use it so thats not a major issue.
I find face rec works well.
Have honor view 10 where fingerprint is an actual button.
Taking some getting used to on this.
I find the HV10 is as fast as this.
But I'll prob keep this.
Like wide angle feature on camera. Screen is nice.
Ip68 but Tbh I still don't plan on taking it swimming.
But I'd still rather have no curved edges. Defo needs a case which u have to with any phone imo.

The expandable storage is restricted to expensive NM cards, so it almost renders it non-existent to me as I’d only want to use the card I already have.

I wish curved edges would die TBH. I can’t stand them. On the P30 Pro I am CONSTANTLY triggering video suggestions when watching content on YouTube, as whenever I try to pick the phone up part of my hand catches the screen edge. I think the bezel size on the newer iPhone models is just about right to provide extra screen real estate without making you have to handle your phone with kid gloves whenever you pick it up. I feel like Samsung have started to pull back on the curves, so at least they’re seeing sense. In fact my favourite of this year’s Galaxy range is the S10e - really nice form factor, completely flat screen and a completely normal fingerprint scanner on the edge of the phone.

Yes these nano cards are 3 times the cost. Can't see them catching on. I do like to have a separate sd card. For now gonna stick with the 128 gb internal.
Can plug a USB into phone to save anything down if memory gets full.

If the nano cards come up on a black friday deal or any other time I might get one.

Yep...the NM cards are totally pointless. Less capacity, slower than normal micro SD's, and more expensive. I wish they'd stuck with micro SD. But it does at least offer the possibility of storage expansion (unlike the other phone I was considering from Xiaomi).

I disagreed Samsung used it alot with short cut enabled swiping on the edge for access to various apps and stuff.

Also without it we would not be where we are now with bendable/foldable oled screens. It was the next step.in mobile innovation at the time.
Great deal. Unfortunately this phone is not dual sim.
