Even the P20 Pro would be a huge upgrade for you.

The lite versions are quite a lot 'liter' than the normal and Pro versions

I guess I'm holding out until I find a Hauwei phone with 5G capabilities. I think buying a 4g only model may be a redundant purchase now

Is headphone jack important to you? (P30 only)

Is IR Blaster important to you (P20 Pro only)

Is more modern design highly important to you (P30)?

Is lower cost important to you? (probably P20 Pro)

Both great phones, both have lots of power in real world use even though P30 processor newer.

To me it all depends on what you are prepared to pay and if any of the above are must-haves. Also if oyu are looking at sim free or best contract deals.

I have a P20 Pro, partner has a P30.

Like Xavier says above, P30 Lite a good step up on P10 Lite.

All depends on what features you value most.

I guess I'm wondering if I should hold out for a phone with 5g capabilities or upgrade now to one of Hauwei's latest models. It has to be SIM free and battery life, speed and storage are most important features for me

This is best Huawei deal right now, forget about 5G, won't be relevant for at least 2 years (if speed of 4G rollout is anything to go by):

Everyone has their own opinion but Xavier is right and I'd be comfy staying with 4G for quite a while yet. If you get good 4G in your area it offers pretty much all most people could want for a phone for the foreseeable future imo. The main area I live I get 4G regular speeds of at least 40-60mbps and often up to just over 80mbps, but I know others may have varied experience and opinions.

Buying a 5G phone at a premium when in truth the infrastructure will take quite a while to roll out fully, especially outside of big cities and into towns and villages. Unless you get a cracking deal I'd personally get a 5G phone when the 5G infrastructure from EE/Three etc mature, to get the best value.

Hey man. So here's the breakdown

P20 Pro -
Has bigger battery by about 10% but realistically from real world tests you'll notice 6% more battery

P30 - has better processor and camera.

I'd probably go for the P30 myself. OR even better - if you can, id get the OnePlus 7 Pro - the 7T is coming out soon so price dropped, its a really good phone

The mate 30 has no google apps, no google store on it. You *might* be able to side-load this stuff and the underlying frameworks but you will find various apps like spotify, netflix, any streaming apps, most (all?) banking apps will either not work or not work as you'd think because they rely on the phones being certified by google.

You also do not know what active measures google will take to stop this stuff working even if you want to get into sideloading.

Hey Real, I'd edge towards P30 too but mainly if price difference not too much and the buyer is not bothered about an IR blaster.

P30 edges photo quality (and obviously has that better optical zoom). But P20 Pro takes much better black and white photos with the dedicated monochrome lens, though only seriously arty people likely to prioritise that.

Lots of choice out there!

I was comparing DXOMARK scores and specs sheet. Besides the extra lens is a huge plus. The monochrome lens is extremely niche so didn't want to confuse the person. If you need such a niche, chances are, you'll know about it already

And I defo agree with you but if there was a decent difference in price, still nothing wrong with the P20 Pro.

DXO marks are very useful but not perfect.

You're right that not everyone needs niches such as a monochrome camera. These same people might not want to dig into settings to get the best out of the top DXO rated phones for different photo scenarios either.

People that want a highly rated DXO mark cameraphone that also gives the best point and shoot pictures are probably best looking in the direction of the phones by the famous search engine... And I'm not talking about Bing

According to TechRadar, no option to sideload ANY apps - Huawei app store will be only way (& its downfall, like Microsoft store)

Monochrome not as niche as it seems, it helps a lot with processing contrast, depth, detail & low light scenes into the final combined picture, as b&w sensor more sensitive than colour one in some respects.

Personally not so keen on zoom & ultrawide, I find that even more niche

Very good points about other uses of the monochrome sensor, Master Xavier!

I'm with you on the zoom lenses - for instance 50 x zoom on the P30 Pro using a periscope lens seems very niche as well - technically super impressive but most useful for an aspiring James bond or a stalker . With the exception of those taking the odd stadium shots at sports events or concerts, perhaps.

I see a little bit more use in ultrawide for those that like to take pics on their travels, or its help with Macro photography, but once again, one persons essential is another persons niche. That's why its good that there are so many options out there!

Well... you'd need the frameworks and even if you get that working - given the phone is not certified by Google lots of things that rely on google DRM are likely not to work - so one known consequence of using Netflix on non-certified phones is that it will never play in HD, spotify might or might not work.

Remember Google has to show they aren't working with Huawei in any way and its fairly trival for them to flick a switch that looks at the device signature and say "naw, this will not work on this device".

Basically if you are a tech nerd who wants to spend hours on forums looking for work-arounds and are happy that google pay will never work and most payment apps and banking apps will never work - this is for you.

If you are a normal person who just wants to use a phone, this is not for you...

Nah it'll be fine. Google won't go to the effort of purposely blocking Huawei, they're out in Congress trying to get the decision overturned. They're ordered to stop trade, so that's all they're doing; cutting them out of their trade. They won't hinder users on purpose.

Apps may be missing a few features, it should be fine tho. I'm buying the phone so I'll keep you updated
Is this the pro?
