2017 model?
Good Deal and same price at Currys - was just looking at this phone as a replacement for my slooooow Honor 5X
Have got a Moto g5 reserved at Argos. Should I go for this instead? Not sure what to do.
Nice phone shame about no oleophobic coating on the screen resulting in a slimy mess

Thanks. What exactly do I need a compass for? I use Google maps directions and hit the "navigate" button occasionally when in the car to get turn by turn directions. Does a lack of compass on the g5 mean this won't work?

,,,my slooooow Honor 5X

Try hard / factory resetting it after doing a thorough backup if necessary - should give you a temporary boost at least.

Also, consider a considerably better Huawei P9 for £140+ (secondhand) - a search for P9's sold in the last few weeks: ebay.co.uk/sch…180

what i understand is i might be wrong if anyone wants to correct me is that it's not as accurate when using the GPS features without the use off the compass.

Well, Currys is Carphone Warehouse, so you would expect the same price.
£10 quidco too.
Great phone. Price has been jumping around on this for a few weeks now. Worth it. Had the 2015 version. Wife has 17. Both brilliant for the price.

I'd go for the P8 as due to the extra 1GB of RAM.

Some motorola g5 have 3GB and some 2GB. You need to check. Apart from this NFC and comapss missing on the G5 but G5 has a removable battery which Huawei doesn't have. I went for the G5 specifically for this reason as once the battery wear off then the phone become useless or you will need to pay someone to replace it hoping the phone wont get damaged

I principle, I totally agree Oyster. However, if the P8 Lites 2017's battery is anything like my mothers P9 Lite, (Which is absolutely unbelievably good,) then I'd still go for the P8.

I think that even if the battery is good, it cant last more than 1-2 years before it starts to last for short time..I use 4 spare batteries and never found my self outside in troubles without battery. I choose to give up compass and a slightly better quality phone (huawei) than giving up the battery

Both phones are good there's pros and cons with both, i managed to get the huawei p8 lite 2017 on the EE deal 129.99 so the reason i went with that.

Agreed on lots of batteries giving up after 2 years. On the other hand, if your paying £150 for a phone, are you really going to be using this for more than 2 years?

No enough RAM will start to hurt from day 1, never mind 2 years down the line.
Some interesting pros and cons for both. I guess with a phone at this price point you're never going to get everything or it'd cost more! Depends what's most important on your list of must haves.

I'm still struggling with the whole compass thing. Really can't figure out if I'd miss it or not.

My Nexus 5x completely conked out on me a few weeks back so I'm just looking for a "it'll do for now" phone as a replacement. I'm hoping I won't notice too much of a difference between my 5x and the p8 lite if I go for it. I didn't like my 5x much anyway.

If you ever travel to a new city and want to use the maps to find your way around on foot, a compass is a requirement. Otherwise the phone will guess the walking direction and often send you completely the wrong way.

Also, if you are ever driving through a built up area using the sat nav and GPS signal is lost, the compass will help to direct you until GPS is restored. Without a compass the phone will try to guess what you are doing, and it usually makes a mess of it (wrong direction, wrong street...etc).

If you only use maps as a sat nav, the lack a of a compass probably won't cause you any major issues.

I have used a samsung s3 neo with 1.5GB ram for 2 and half years and still using it (paid something like 150£). No issues until now (except broken screen..my fault)..only thing which caused me some problem was the 16GB memory but i used an external micro SD and kind of solved the problem. I can use this Samsung for another year if I want too. Now I got the G5 with 3GB and im pretty sure I Can use it easily for 2-3 years. I alredy purchased 2 extra batteries for 11£ each. No need for a power bank and can buy more if needed. Compass lack is annoying I agree ..still wondering why Motorola left this out..

Same here... but I found uninstalling and stopping Google apps I don't need made it happier. Chrome and the Camera are real memory hogs.

If I can find a phone which has a battery life as good as the 5X (thanks to the excellent Task Killer) and where I can have 2 SIMS as well as an SD Card I'm sold. Not sure if this is it.
I bought it for £130 Inc 10 top up, at the time ee was selling it for £130 maybe 3 weeks ago but they were oos and Chitter chatter on eBay were selling it for same price, but I was undecided if I should wait for ee to get it back in stock with the benefit of tcb £10+, I went for Chitter chatter and glad I did and very happy with phone 2017 model and knowing ee didn't get it back instock.
I bought this for the wife when EE were doing the £119 + £10 top-up and its one helluva phone for the money. So impressed I put it as a HOTUK watchword and I've just ordered it from CPW to replace my ageing OnePlus X. Cheers OP
I've just watched some sample video capture from this phone. It worries me a bit, very jerky. I'm now leaning back towards the Moto g5. I think video quality (of my children) is more important to me than a compass.

It's more important when you want to know the direction you are looking at (orientation), and when doing the google maps navigation ON foot (because the google maps cannot get your direction unless you walk a long distance. By car, that's not an issue, as within a second you have travelled at least 30ft which is enough to overcome GPS margin of error and provide data of your direction). It's quite useful, for example when you are.getting out of the tube and have to make up your mind which direction you should walk etc.
Furthermore devices with an e-compass receive more positional/directional data, which is important if used for applications requiring those, such as Augmented and Virtual Reality.

This really is useful information, thank you for your time.

For the amount of times I would find use for the compass I'm wondering if I should be getting so hung up on it. Having said that, I did exactly what you mentioned just this Saturday when I was trying to navigate (between pubs and restaurants!) in the middle of London. My phone, an old nexus 5, helped a lot so im assuming it has a compass. Otherwise I may have been lost!
Is the camera on p8 better than honor7?
Got one, have a few Android hanging issues but other than that spot on

Hahahahahahahahaha, it is NOW, never used to be though?.

But it's alllll gooooooooood still, lol. :-D
OP .. I'm taking it that the Phone in your Deal is SIM-Free/Unlocked, yeh?, thanx.
Good price for this. Thanks OP.
Not sure why people compare the P8 to Moto G5. Huawei is miles better. More ram and processing power. Quality is also better. Camera is similar. Removable battery is no advantage to most people who are likely to upgrade before it wears down significantly.
this is a great phone, however I have had bluetooth issues with mine, bluetooth headphones and a fitbit struggled to connect or stay connected, however, my car and Huawei band are fine - seems to be a common problem, however never seems slow to me, get good battery life, photos are good. Finger print scanner is fast. The only other thing is I have a hairline crack straight across the screen and honestly don't know how it got there.
Spec for price I feel this knocks the G5 out of the park...
And if you don't like the huawei emui change it for Evie a superb launcher!

But you shouldn't have to do that. When I seen this phone and in reviews the screen gets sticky it's a really stupid thing Huawei keep doing on budget handsets

It was a moot point for me, something I rarely use so never really came into the buying pro's & cons equation. I'll need to try the wife's video now seeing as you've put it in my head lol. The photos are fine imo.

Oh yes please, an opinion on the video would be good. I never quite know whether to trust the online reviews by the "experts", they're very picky and critical. It's nice to know what normal users think of these things.
