Sony tried proprietary memory cards - it all ended in tears and they eventually started using standard SD and uSD cards.

I'd like to see a dual SIM hybrid slot as the standard.

Yep, my Honour 8 Pro (made by Huawei) has two SIM slots, with a 128GB Micro SD in the second slot. Really cannot see how this shift to a fractionally smaller proprietary format is achieving anything meaningful.

The idea is that Huawei can make thinner phones/phones with bigger batteries/better components due to the space they save by not using Micro SD. Instead this memory card fits in the second SIM slot. But pretty sure it is only on the Mate 20 range at the moment.

It's complete carp though. These things are only a tiny bit smaller than Micro SD cards. It's just a scam to fleece customers.

I'm confused. I didn't think my P20 Pro had a slot for expandable memory?

It has 2 SIM slots. If you're only using one, this will fit in the other one.

Seems to be Mate 20 range only, ignore me. Someone in the reviews said they had it in their P20 Pro, but everywhere else states Mate range only.

But it won't work on the P20 Pro. Yes the Nano Memory Card will fit... It just won't work. Think of it like sticking a DVD in an old CD player or a Blu-ray into a DVD player. It might physically fit, it just won't work. The hardware wasn't released on any phone until the Mate 20 range came out.

Yeah, I think it is only the international version and pretty sure the ones in Three are also dual SIM, well that's what I heard.

Good point, I forgot about the eSIM. Well I guess if we could all just forget I was ever here that would be marvellous.

That’s exactly what I thought as well - a huge negative for the Mate 20 which as good as makes it non-expandable memory, just like an iPhone... and the whole point of going to Android is for the choice as most decent phones accept microSD and don’t seem to suffer for claims of internal space or durability.
A new generation of suckers is coming of age. Expect more innovations soon.

Does this make any sense to anyone?
How much more battery power can you get in the tiny space saved by this over a standard SD card?
I should add that my standard SD card already fits into the second SIM slot, now if HUAWEI make an SD card that would fit in the same slot as the SIM card. Now that would be useful and we could have 2 SIM cards and an SD.
This or a standard SD card that you can use in any other device and can buy from any number of suppliers with different prices and quality. NO THANKS HUAWEI.
People are saying that it should have a micro sd slot, however this would require a third slot.

This doubles up with the second sim slot.

However unless other suppliers adopt this size I can't see it surviving long. We'll see on the P30 and Mate 30 phones.
I can actually see one advantage to this, they can sell dual sim phones in the UK and just say to use the other slot for a memory card. It's annoying that UK mobile operators try to prevent us buying dual sim phones.

£43.99 - soon be under £30 and I might consider buying - still way to expensive IMO

If you already have two SIM slots and can pop a memory card in one of them, you do not need a Micro SD slot and the hardware required to read that Micro SD, thus saving space.

Not saying I agree with it, but there is some logic to it.
Everyone should avoid this phone if they are using non standard memory cards.

Exactly!
Heat to the OP as those that want this for their Mate 20/Honor etc, but make no mistake, this is a money making scheme for Huawei. FFS they made the P6, a 6mm thin phone that had a MicroSD slot and a headphone jack which was released back in q1 of 2013.
Although I like Huawei and I've had several of their phones (P6, P8, P9), they have now chosen to copy Apple to much and are now copying the way they make money out of customers by making things like this to use with their own devices rather than using the industry standard option like the MicroSD. Next they'll drop the type c and they'll have their own connection, which of course you can only buy from them.......
I hope they fail just like Sony did.
£40 for 128GB? What's the RRP?
Stupid idea. Why is this hot?

I've been using phones that do this for years, it is a pain when you have to take the card out to run a 2nd SIM though - so people can still contact you abroad, but you can make local (to where you are) calls without paying international call rates.
Most Far East phone companies do phones like this, although I only rate Xiaomi as any good, due to their long record of device support. My oldest Xiaomi is a 1st gen Redmi Note, and still being supported with updates.

We already have this in many phones and have done so for years. My Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has a hybrid slot and I bought it a year ago.

You do have a choice, don't buy the phone in the first place!:{

That’s where I ended up. I don’t feel so stupid for having an iPhone X and a Galaxy S9 (I held off buying a Samsung but got such a good deal on it and am really impressed with the phone) now - the other problem with Huawei is astronomical depreciation (probably for being overpriced in the first place) and I’ve seen a number of them suffer with battery issues too - from the Nexus 6P and P9. I hope Samsung (and LG) stave off this stupid attempt to remove headphone sockets and standard memory card slots longer than the other manufacturers do...

So would they.
This technology put me off buying the Mate 20 Pro. If Nano Memory cards were compatible (with an adapter) to Micro SD card then I think it is a good technology that could be utilised in a few devices but as it isn't compatible (last time I checked) I think it is an overpriced technology that is too limiting to the user. Not voted either way.
