HUGE DIGITAL CAMERA CLEARANCE SALE AT SAINSBURY'S

37
Found 7th Jun 2007
I was in my local Sainsbury's store this morning and noticed there is a big clearance on digital camera's in the electrical section - in fact virtually every cmaera (bar one or two) was reduced to clear ranging from Sony to Canon to Kodak and Vivitar.

I asked the lady the reason for the clearance - she said it was to get rid of the old models so the new models could be brought in and she also said she imagined it would be nationwide.

I decided to go for the Sony DSC-T10 which was marked reduced to clear at £149.99 (and i thought that was a good deal) and it scanned at the till as £99.99!!! These are on amazon for £198. This clearance started yesterday (06/06/2007) so there are still plenty left in my local anyway, although i took the last one of the sony DSC-T10's.

PLEASE NOTE: Only larger stores will probably sell these items and it is ONLY AVAILABLE IN-STORE and not on-line. Stock will probably be limited but definatley worth a look if your in a Sainsbury's in the next few days.

Oh and don't foget to use your nectar card!

Does not look like £99.99 price for the camera mentioned above is Nationwide: most sainsbury's still want £149.99 unless you get a discount for the display model.

Oh.....i thought Sony was a good brand. Anyway if this is the case Sainsbury's will take it back within 28 days for a refund so i will see how it goes......their quite good like that so nothing ventured nothing gained.

They had about 12 different types of cameras on clearance from around 4 different brands but no T30's that you mentioned, although there were one or two other Sony's.

Anyway I have to go to work now so if anyone has any questions will reply tonight.

I really want to buy the Sony T10 but they have none at my local store in Ilford  . Did anyone else have any luck finding them? Could someone be willing to purchase it for me and I will pay them and also arrange postal service? :?:

- so not exactly 'HUGE' then?

NO,NO,NO,NO.....Don't touch Sony cameras with a bargepole !!!
They have an ongoing problem with the CCD chip on them.....OK they offer a free fix because it's a problem they know about.....Trouble is you don't know it's knackered until you come to use it for a special occasion / holiday.

The ccd chip problem happens around 3 years....OR BEFORE.... after you buy it....you get blured or shaky piccys....or the lcd screen has lines in it or the lcd screen goes blank.....If you have a Sony camera YOU MUST INFORM SONY NOW if you have a problem with it....I believe the free fix ends soon...

see this link .. sony.co.uk/vie…_GB

And the trouble also is that people don't know of this problem.....so when, after a couple or 3 years the camera goes kaput they just go out and get another one....usually Sony because of their 'good' reputation !

yeh (yeh is apparently too short message to write)

I have a Sony DSC-P92....father in law has the DSC-T33....Brother in law has the same as me and Sister in law has the DSC-U60.....the sister in law had to send hers back to Sony 2 weeks ago.....As did all of us over the past 6 months.....4 cameras....4 returns.
Sony's reputation made me buy Sony....and their after sales to fix the problem have been great (a 5 week turnaround though)....but they say that the NEW ccd chip could go at any time also.....so next time it goes I will plumb for a new camera....NOT Sony !

just been to sainsbury in washington tyne and wear still priced at 149.99 when i asked woman to scan it to check price!!!!

Fortunately the T10 isn't on the list.

Our 4 year old P32 is. However, it is not broken, it refuses to have a problem, it's possibly in denial. :giggle:

Can you post a scanned image of the receipt for all of us to see. The lady in our local sainsbury said that if I take a copy of your receipt she will price match

same here! please ...

Was the box damaged at all?

All this talk about Sony probs ! there was a Comet offer on the T30 recently and I didn't take it up - instead went for the Sanyo Xacti E60 (my daughter knicked the previous E6 model from me after 6 months). Great camera at around £100 delivered !

Yes T30 (a friend owns one) is a great camera, I own the T1 and also recently the T10 and all are great. The T1 I have had for nearly 4 years now and its bloody great!

1303 what store did you go ,,i went to local store in leeds ,,and it was priced at 149 and scanned at 149 ,,so can you tell me where did you get it for 99 pnds ,,
cheers

I would advise don't scan your receipt in or give your exact location, nice deal for those who can get it.

Seeing as advice is being dished out, I would advise to not take the above advice

Seems OP got lucky and the manager of that store had applied an additional discount to clear stock quickly - common practice for a manager to do this.

So as only one person has got this deal and it certainly isn't a 'HUGE' clearance, can't really understand the hotness of this thread.

lol ^

a little hint on taking your pictures with a compact camera - having worked in a photo store for a few years, most people just click straight down on the button, not allowing the camera to focus, and then wonder why they have blurred photos. On most modern decent digital compacts, you need to hold the button half down (you can usually see what's happening as your white focus points will go green) and then shoot the picture.

We do our passport photos on a sony t7 which is fine, in a lit room with no flash.

You know what they say about bad workmen...

Huge digital camera sale, eh? No use to me, I only want a small digital camera :whistling:

Well IMO it was since they had loads of digitla cameras on sale - Kodaks, Canon, Vivitar and Sony - in all around 12 different cameras - maybe not huge in your opinion but that is huge for "Sainsbury's" who usually only reduce one at a time.

Thanks for this - certainly news to me. I've got a DSC-P100 which fortunately doesn't appear to be on the list, or exhibiting any problems.
It's not a perfect camera by any means, but have been very pleased with the results and generaly build quality/sturdiness. Would probably buy another Sony camera when this one eventually dies, but having read about all these CCD failures I'm not so sure now.

Well i don't even know to scan my receipt anyway plus it would be kinda difficult for someone who does not have a scanner :whistling:

Anyway i called up the store in question this morning and said i told a friend about this deal but when they tried to get it it was £50 more than i paid. She said she'd call me back.

The upshot was that the section manager had asked the price controller to lower it to £99.99 as a "system reduction", which meant it appeared this was the system price as supposed to a specifically reduced price, as it was a display model - (even though it had been kept behind a glass cabinet and probably never was touched) - however whilst i knew i was taking the last one i was unaware i was actually taking one that was previously on display. I know for a fact they are not meant to apply "system reductions" like this - it should always show up as "price rreduction" but i cannot complain as i got a good deal.

Anyway i am really sorry as it looks like i mucked up on this one big style- in future i will make sure i check with at least two stores before i post anything. However if your store only has one left and its on display its worthwhile asking for a discount although i know this is a long shot. Anyway once again really sorry:oops: and i have adjusted title accordingly and added a note in the OP.

Despite being £149.99 i don't think it the Sony DSC-T10 is available anywhere else cheaper (well not according to Pricerunner anyway) so maybe some people might still be interested.

Alos had many other brands like Kodaks and Canons starting from around the £39.99 mark.

Vivitar Cameras were starting from £19.99

Hopefully someone picked up a good deal even if not the Sony for £99.99

You are right in what you are saying about the half press, but that is not the main problem, as most compact cameras will not take a picture unless it has focussed. A lot of the blurriness come because of the slight lag between pressing the shutter and actually exposing the sensor. It may only be a fraction of a second, but most people will have started to put the camera down by the time the sensor is exposed!!

If they have the ViviCam 5385 then it's worth buying Rebadged Pentax.

If they have the ViviCam 5385 then it's worth buying Rebadged Pentax.

These are manufactured by Premier cameras (the largest camera manufacturer in the world) for Vivitar and Pentax, and though they look very similar, they will be quite different cameras underneath. The Pentax has a few more features, a much better lens and bespoke software processing - all of which will have an impact on the final image.

I got a Canon Ixus 800 for £99.99 and it is amazing.

Cheapest place on the internet for exactly the same camera is £219.99

Amazing deal in my eyes.

They also had a Canon Ixus 60 with Selphy Printer for £99.99, also around the £200 + mark on the internet.

Bought the Ixus 800 on Friday night and my brother bought the last one on Saturday morning from the store in the Galleries Washington.

The prices did seem very cheap.
