Poor old Woolies (and the staff especially). They are a British institution. I don't shop there (as there isn't one in Wigan) but I really don't want to see one of the UK's BIGGEST retailers go under 'cos of this cocked up government and the Thatcher mentality that grew out of the late 70's / early 80's.

Oh, and hot btw

Must be the only thing a United fan and a City fan will ever agree on. I hope that someone comes in and saves them as I can't imagine not having a woolies in my local town. About the only good shop in there as well.

Good deal and should sweeten the misses up so I can have the TV for the weekend footy.

Now I wasn't going to say anything like that, but since you put it like that so do I. Might make up for last year!

Andy Wedge How can you still be blaming Maggie Thatcher she has been out of power 18 Years time to look at the present Government I think...........Woolies is a British Institution it must Go On !!!!!

Someone please save woolies! My wife has been trying big style for the last year or 2, respect and regrets to all their staff, not the best time of year for this. Halfway decent items at appropriate prices. Many towns will be worse off if they die. Respect for the institution, hope it goes well for you guys.

It all started with Thatcher. Seriously, it did. And Reagan. But I do blame the "new" Labour govnmt for not correcting the mess that she started.

Ditto

Saw on the tele that people are saying that it has no identity and doesn't specialise in any one thing. Surely that is the strength of the place. Where else on the high street can you go and buy a newspaper, the latest cd/dvd/video game for yourself, box of chocolates for the wife, birthday present for your son and pair of shoes for your daughter.

Will be a sad day if they do close the doors for good.

Yup.
It's iconic. And if they close then this will be the absolute worse thing that has happened in this mess. And it will speak volumes about the government if they do close. FFS who heard of "Northern Rock" before this whols catastrophe started..and why bail them out and let others (like Woolies) go under?

For those of you who think Woolworths is a British institution really need to do their research. Woolworths was originally an American company. Ever heard of the Woolworth building in New York? It's only because it's become very popular here in the UK since the 1960's that they've concentrated their operations here and become an everyday brand.

It's still been going for 99 years... whether it's here or in America it will be a sad day.

What's next? McDonalds?

What's next? McDonalds?

Hope so - The end to sawdust burgers and spotty ginks. Also they used to give half a pence in every pound to the IRA.-Fact.

it is a sad day for woolies to go under, espesically for the the staff, but they have been mis-managed internally for years. It's not the goverments fault, labour or conservative. I do wish that folk who say things like 'It all started with Thatcher. Seriously, it did. And Reagan. But I do blame the "new" Labour govnmt for not correcting the mess that she started' would take a bit more time to know what they were talking about before starting on a topic they clearly know little about. As 'azzy129' pointed out woolies is not even a uk company originally. Look woolworths up in wiki for some background before posting generalised nonsense and look at what the markets have felt about woolies performance over the last few years.

I do hope something can be sorted however to save the staff jobs, it is a sad day.

anyways forgot why i started posting. The deal is hot. Three mega size toblerones for 6.30 is an amazing price.

Woolworths has been losing money for a long time. Ever heard of throwing good money after bad?

Furthermore, Northern Rock has not been bailed out, it's been bought out!

Is it just me or do none of these prices add up?

I think negative a few hundred million is running out of money. Its all just numbers though, they won't instantly shut down all their operations.

I can see shops staying open, but shelves becoming a bit more empty

Woolworths unfortunately is typical of UK stores who have treated their customers shabbily over the years with poor customer service & undertrained overworked staff, anyone noticed how few staff & checkouts they have in their stores????

MFI is another UK company with some dire horror stories, apart from people losing their jobs good riddance to them.

It amazes me how companies with no collateral, they both rent all their stores, manage to borrow so much money in the first place....

Good deal by the way, bought some from Nettos today for £3.74:thumbsup:

I was thinking the same...

"£2.79 and 3 for 2 (so 3 for £6.30)"
Huh?
If they're £2.79 each and you get a free one if you pay for two then it's 3 for £5.58. I'm not sure where £6.30 comes from.

And then it says the deal is for £3.49. Which doesn't appear to bear any relation to any of the already conflicting amounts.

Not voted - since I've no idea if the deal's right since it contradicts itself several times... :?

This will do for my daughters to "buy" this for me for my Birthday ( Sunday ) and Christmas.

Price is £3.49.
There is a ]printable 20% off voucher, taking the price down to £2.79.
3 for 2 = £5.58.
All makes sense apart from the 3 for 2 bit, bad maths there I guess

Very confusing - I guess the poster just wanted to put the deal on quickly & got a bit excited.
I think the following MIGHT be the correct pricing.

The bars were originally £6.99 but they are reduced to half price -£3.49 or £3.50 maybe?
They are also on a 3 for 2 offer - say £7 for 3
Then you can get 10% off with the discount voucher
Making 3 bars for £6.30.

Damned good deal.
Hubby loves Toblerone - pity he's just been diagnosed with diabetes - Hmmm do I or don't I??
