Probably fine for a occasional viewer but worth noting that TVs only include a single tuner, so if you record you won't be able to change the channel where as a PVR will have 2 tuners (minimum, newer ones can have 3+) so you can record and watch a different channel at the same time or even record two things and watch another channel by switching back to the TVs tuner...
The 1TB version looks better value at around £8 extra.

And don't forget 4.5% TCB

Only downside with most catchup apps outside of iPlayer is that you are forced to watch adverts. Tempted with one of these to allow add skipping having binned Sky+ a few years back.

Has anyone used this specific model? Roughly how much can this store in terms of hours at a decent resolution?

I've got to say, I got a youview box for my grandma and it's got Greta features that every smarttv should have built in, like going back in TV guide and it launching iPlayer and so on to play what you've missed.
Ok price, not amazing for just 500GB IMHO. If you don't mind going used I would recommend hunting out a used Youview box on eBay, the BT ones are pretty good, especially the 4K one with a 1TB HDD and can be had often for this kind of money (sometimes less). The 4K is irrelevant for Freeview but 4K does work with some of the apps e.g. Netflix...

Do you happen to have a link to the 1TB one of this too please?. :-)

Thanks for this detail, I was wondering if modern tv's would be ok with an external HD.

Also, any recommendations of WIFI enabled boxes?
Anything like this device that can do IPTV?

Is youview box and bt box the same thing?

Is youview box and bt box the same thing?

Mostly, yes.

It's like a SKY box, and a FreeSAT box.

Other than a few 'niggles' specific from one system to the next, they're essentially the same thing.

So depends upon your interpretation really?, lol.

But yeh, essentially the same thing, etc ...
I have a Youview box (TalkTalk DN372T) and a 9 year old TV. I’m planning on replacing my TV with a more modern one, hopefully, with built in twin tuners so I can add an external drive to replace my YV box.

Anyone know if this proposed setup will be as convenient to use as my present arrangement.

The Dtrt2000 is a retail Youview box. It looks nicer than the BT badged Youview boxes which essentially have the same internals in a smaller plasticky box which runs BT software. The BT software is ready for their online service but without subscription simply performs like the retail box.

The dtrt2000 does in some instances suffer a bit with cross transmitter interference where it can autoretune itself and set up the channels for another strong transmitter. Its not a common issue but it can happen. Personally I think the Humax boxes running Youview/BT software are excellent recorders and integrate well with the various broadcaster catch up services.
These seem a bit pointless these days.

Most newer model (<2 year old) Smart Tvs do have these features.
Freeview Play - The going back in TV guide and catchup features

Merry Xmas

I've been using Humax since the PVR8000T Had a Topfield (absolute nightmare) and a Sharp (rebadged something or other) that both died on me/turned buggy pretty quickly.

Now have the Humax FVP-4000T. Was using the Humax Fox T2 before that.

CEX has a grade A/500GB for £40, though, personally I wouldn't be that keen! uk.webuy.com/sea…000

The BT Youview boxes on CEX are here, though I don't know which corresponds to which Humax model - if they even do.

Agree. Almost never watch anything live nowadays; either record or live pause for 15 mins at start to skip adverts. Sky TV added insult to injury - paying for the subscription and having to suffer the adverts to boot.
Got 1tb one from Hughes last week for my sister for xmas. She's not tech savvy so I plugged it in and applied an update to save me hassle on xmas day. Seems like a nice box and easy to use. I ditched Virgin a few years ago and got a Humax FVP4000T, saved me loads of money.

Yeah, good wasn't it!
Don’t know much about these boxes other than the picture quality via my current one (TalkTalk DN370T) is far inferior to that when viewed directly through my TV. Is this a feature/failure of all of these boxes irrespective of the make?
I’d like to improve the picture quality of my recorded stuff but if they are all the same there is little point in changing.

The live tv and recorded tv quality of the several Humax YouView and Freesat boxes I have had has been indistinguishable. They are also superb picture quality and look the same as my Samsung tv. First I'd check the quality of your cables, connections and aerial (presumably passes through your Talk talk box to your tv). See what the signal and quality readings are. However, I've seen the TalkTalk box image quality discussed before so maybe that's it.
Think some of the TalkTalk boxes were made by Huawei - got one a few years ago, and I threw mine out (you had to pay more for the recording function) as I had a Humax already. I assumed it was like my mum's at the time, which was slooooow as hell.

As others have mentioned, take a look at second-hand BT Humax boxes (T2100 / T4000) on eBay. They represent excellent value and a better deal than this one posted I think.

eg.

BT Humax DTR-T2100
look to pay around £40-£50

BT Humax DTR-T4000 (1TB)
look to pay around £65-£80

You won't get the BT Internet enabled channels but I just use mine as a Freeview HD box. Very happy with my purchase.

If you don't like eBay, you can buy these from CEX also
