Figured this deserved it's own post as it appears to be the cheapest going at the mo.

2 year warranty as standard.

Much better deal than the one yesterday.

Top deal, hope this means the retail price of these is coming down to £249 soon! I've noticed most places now have stock of them at last. With Sky dropping to £49 they do need to trim the price a bit.

Don't forget you can get ITV HD on SKY now once you get the new EPG

anyone bought here before ?

Dont forget installation charges

Hot product and getter better value for money all the time.

Pays for itself in less than 12 months if you ditch your $ky HD+ contract.

Before we get the $ky v Freesat debate going this isn't in direct competition to Sky ... They are two different services aimed mainly at two different types of consumer .Freesat is just a limited service for limited Free HD for those that dont want, or cant afford, chunky PAY TV contracts or can't receive digital terrestrial Freeview.

]http//ww…696 Sky Pay Once Watch Forever £73.40 but ask the installer to fit a quad LNB and twin Cable or fit one yourself once the dish is up and aligned (which is the hard bit).

If you dont have a Sky dish already this is probaly the cheapest way to get an installation and 4 months of free Sky and a basic Sky box and viewing card to keep forever or sell!!.... Dont forget to Cancel $ky 1 month before the free 4 month trial is up

Interesting info , really interested in this now .... how much is the sky box worth if you were to sell it on ?
Also do you get a quad lnb with that package of ebuyer or do you have to buy one for the installer to fit instead of the one that comes with the package , if so where would you get one from and how much are they?

Cheers in advance for the help....

Another year and these will hopefully be sub-£200 and there'll be a few more FTA HD channels. Sky must be worried....

I tried getting my sky engineer to fit a quad lnb, he was having none of it, i even asked if i could buy one, didnt matter you can get second hand ones on ebay for £5-£8, just fitted mine (piece of pi$$ to fit)

So do you guys reckon the price will drop further soon, i reckon theyll level out at £200 and stay there...

You dont get a quad LNB with the Sky pay Once package. If you speak to your installer nicely he might fit one for free. Mine was a subcontractor and charged me £20 to fit the Quad LNB and twin cable and he gave me a receipt for them. Dont enquire with Sky up front else you'll pay a lot more as its not classed as a standard installation.

You can pick one up for about £30 from Screwfix, Maplins, B&Q or specialsit shops like Sat cure are very good. ]http//ww…htm. Even Argos sell a complete kit though not the cheapest! ]http//ww…htm

I dont know how much you'll get for the basic sky box but "buy-it now" ones are going for £40 upwards plus p&p. I personally ran a third cable from my Quad LNB and use mine to watch FTA channels on the bedroom TV.

Tough luck with the installer. I reckon as sales of Freesat have shot up in the past few months as people cant afford (or are fed up of paying) Sky contracts they are getting wise. As you say.... easy to fit. Once the dish is up and aligned by the engineer it's just a straight swap. A basic Freesat install will set you pack £70+ and you wont get a free box or sky free for 4 months. (BUT BE SURE to cancel 1 month in advance).

I doubt until Metronics and Pansonic launch thier PVR's you'll seen prices drop much lower than they are now. Even then I think £250 will be the limit as the decent Freeview PVR's (Topfield, Humax etc) are £200 or more.

I posted a similar deal on one of these a couple of weeks ago hotukdeals.com/ite…924 but backed out of it after reading all the negative feedback re SD picture quality.

Still waiting for my refund from Homebase! :-( ...............

SD quality is improved if fed through RGB scart but the HD picture is superb.

Hi, Bought one of these when the Homebase deal was on. This is a fantastic box! not sure why people are slating the SD picture quality, mine has superb picture quality for both HD and SD piped through a Panasonic 50" display.

Bought the quad LNB from leConcepts (they sell a kit including 20 meters of cable, the LNB, the adapter and all fixings and plugs for the cable for £35) was extremely straight forward to fit. My signal strength is 90% and signal quality is 100%.

Take the plunge you wont be dissapointed

Thought you were always tied into a 12 month contract with Sky? Do you not have to give the box back if you cancel?

Normally Sky is a 12 month contract, but SKY Pay Once Watch Forever is not a contract. It's a tempter to get you be in a contract which is why you get Sky free( 4 basic mixes) for 4 months in the the hope you'll carry on with it.

You get to keep the Box, the dish, the installation, and the viewing card FREE FOREVER!!!

Just cancel 1 month before the 4 month free trial is up and you are totally out of $ky's clutches to do as you please with all the kit.. Cancel your direct debit to be sure as well. Technically their T&C's say you have to keep the box contected to a phone line for 12 months but as you are not in a signed contract they cant really enforce it. The engineer said you only need the phone line to initally activate the box. I've moved mine to the bedroom where it's not near a socket anyway.

EDIT: Even if you only have a single LNB you can still use this box for recording one channel whilst watching another ... but with some limitiations.

36,000 have already got the new epg....the rest will get it over the next few months......

Can you scan and get some of teh 'foreign' channels as per a normal Sky digibox?

Also, could you connect a DVD Recorder to this and save material onto DVD?

There is a non-freesat mode that lets you scan for all the FTA channels and there is no limit on the number as there is with the Sky Boxes. There is even an hidden menu that allows you to operate motorised systems for acccess to 1000's of FTA channles from other satellites.

I believe, to record to DVD you would have to copy to an external hard drive first to transfer to a PC or record from the scart output to an input on a DVD recorder.

I think you still have to set up the channel manually and there is rumour of ITV trying to restrict it.

Spectrum have been going for ages as a bricks and mortar shop. They are down the road from me and have been good in the most.

Had one issue with the appliance shop, sold me an oem diswasher rather than the retail one (oem had no casing whatsoever). Apart from that, they've been around for YEARS!

I may have to take the hit and get this, the more I hear about the machine the better it sounds, just a shame there is not a great deal of HD content out there.

How well does the series link work? (Our series link on freeview is pants so it'd be nice to have that feature working)

Series link works fine. It also tells you if there is an HD version available and if you want to record that or SD.

Correct, you have to manually add is as a "Other Channel" much the same as you do when new HD channels are testing. A quick google search will tell you the frequency required to get it. Don't get your hopes up, apart from the football - there aint much else on.

With regard to ITV restricting it, not sure how they can as it a a free to air channel!

Quite! I think I read something about PIN restrictions but you can easily overide them.

A software update can be forced by switching the STB off at the mains, leaving for 30secs and then re-establish power whilst keeping "backup" pressed in on your STB (not on the remote). You might need to hold the backup button down for up to 30secs before the dowload starts.

In saying all of that, I'm not sure if this forces an EPG update? Anyone advise?

You should not force an update, it is normally only done at installation and no it will not get you the new EPG. For info go to Digital Spy, there is a thread with 4000 odd posts on the subject and covers all you will ever need and more...

quad lnb on ebay at £9.99, i have fitted ten upto now and not had a problem... just check satellitetv out for more info, and is ITV HD really worth commenting about... I install and believe for about 3 programmes per month its not really worth getting freesat just for that lmao....

by the way I copy straight to external dvd recorder with no problems too, though if you go for a comag hd you can also copy hd direct to a external hard drive with the usb output it has!!

just a thought..

I must admit after checking this out myself you do get problems with some SD broadcasts, but then again I only use it fo the extre fta and non fta channels and for HD only. For freeview SD your better watching it thru your tv with inbuilt freeview if you can...

make your own judgement either way....

by the way I mainly got it for the extra 12 music channels I get on a fixed dish, couple that to a motorised dish and you get Nat Geigraphic HD too.... :))
