Why not get YouView?

Why not get YouView?

Big difference is input. Freesat uses a dish whereas you view uses aerial.

Where my aerial comes into the house, it's the most obscure location ever. No idea why you'd have a TV there. Having a sky dish (and choosing where I wanted it to be installed) means I rely on the coax from the dish and aerial is redundant.
Rather than drilling and rerouting the aerial, it's easier to just buy a freesat box or pay for sky.

these are excellent bits of kit. heat added

Excellent spot thank you. I've had Freesat as a deal alert for a few weeks now, exactly what I was looking for. Cheers.

I have had a older model humax hdr for about 6 years now, can't fault it!

Easy to replace the hard drive for a 2tb one for hours of HD storage

good box.
humax were selling refurbished boxes directly at good price, but it looks they have closed the web site now.

Excellent, got a spare 1tb. Cheers for that.

Brilliant freesat box

Love my 1TB one...great boxes.

we have a refurbished one of these which cost similar money. it's very good. good price

Great bit of kit. Only got rid of mine (moved to EE TV) as I wanted to stream recordings to an iPad.

Thanks to our biased national propaganda machine any HD content must be encrypted and can only be replayed on the machine which recorded it. Outrageous when they've made you pay for that content with the threat of prison if you refuse.
In the US and EU countries like Germany this DRM is actually illegal. Theoretically it should be possible to buy this in Germany and bypass the UK encryption, meaning you can playback content on any machine which will do it.

I got a refurb 1TB from Bargain Crazy a few months after these came out for like £180 which was a great deal back then. Unit appeared brand new with adhesive cellophane still on...box however was missing polystyrene inserts and unit was packed out with bubblewrap.

These do crop up once in a while on Bargain Crazy but they tend to only have like 1 in stock at a time, worth going for if during one of their 20% coupon codes.

Interesting, although Freesat units are only sold in the UK...obviously the channels are scanned and regionalised with an EPG from the usual Astra 28E but I cannot see anyway around this law...as these boxes with this sort of customisation are only sold here.

just as easy to hook up and external 2TB hard drive as i do. record films etc and transfer to external hard drive all from the Humax remote.

It also lacks stuff available on Freeview owing to Sky licencing and doesn't have the rewind a week YouView EPG.

If you want to read about the skull duggery the BBC has been up to over this then the newspaper most closely associated with them has run a series of articles about it. It's certainly interesting:

Are you sure those boxes are not just exports for ex-pats living in Germany to buy to receive UK TV content? (and if so it would be cheaper at that price to just buy from Amazon UK and have them shipped). I really cannot see Humax producing boxes without HD encryption and supplying them to mainland europe personally.

brill bit of kit, if you are thinking about it, just buy it, you will not regret it

DRM is illegal in Germany so they couldn't supply a box which does encrypt.

Of course, even my 1963 10" black and white tube driven TV in a big mahogany cabinet gets Sky Sports & Films for free and in 4K and 3D.

Good price for a great box.

I have Humax FOX SAT HDR units (2 of them) one running stock the other running custom firmware.
Picture is great, and SD up scaling exceptional as is the audio.

This model on Amazon is a decent price. This new model (I purchase the more expensive model with 1TB drive and Wifi) is a good set up. It has a DNLA client / SMB etc. as well as a good iPlayer and other internet services.

One nice feature is full native support for MKVs and AVI etc.. plays back with no issues.

Insert a USB drive with media and after a short scan it will offer to copy some or all the content to HD.for later playback.

Inteface and EPG is very slick

For the folk asking about FreeSAT for these units the units have 2 modes 1) FreeSAT 2) STB
In set top box mode there is no EPG and you get more channels.
The reason for separating them is the made licencing and DRM
There is custom firmware for the older models to allow STB channels on FREESAT mode. I think there are also holes in the HD DRM as you can log the chaseplay file.
The image quality on these units is superb. Much better than the Sky units IMHO also the FreeSAT channels have lower compression than SKY so fewer artefacts.

Good deal heat++

i didnt understand half that but ........sounded amazing oO

No dish included, is this such a good price after all?

What do I need to buy to get this connected to my home wifi?

Almost any sat dish will do, twenty quid on fleabay will see you right (and a few quid to a tame installer, if you're not up to the task yourself).

Would be interested to hear if it also supports motor-driven dishes, as Hotbird is one of the great unsung joys of 'free' sattellite viewing.

I own one great box. There is rewind a week EPG with this box. On freesat it's known as freetime. Nice EPG. There is also Showcase which shows specially selected top shows too.
