that is cheap, plus u will get leopard for a tenner from apple direct. not bad?

Voted hot.

Good price even though it could be better with students since they can have a free iPod (by mailing rebate) if they buy a Mac computer before 31/10/07.

Good price, voted hot innit

Excellent price, matching their taxfree deals. It's down to about £772 with quidco I think.

That is a brilliant price. I have the same macbook and upped the ram to 2gb.

Voted Hot and Repped.

just cant justify getting a mac ... so expensive!

can someone enlighten me to why they are better than windows?

Cheaper still, fly to the US and buy one in the apple store! I kid you not

Good post, a good deal but I agree that macs appear to be more expensive and PCs

How can you get cashback from both quidco and egg cash?

Dangerous question!

Having used both (professionally) I wouldn't dream of paying all that extra money for having a mac at home. But I know that there are others that disagree!

Great deal,

Been holding out for a MacBook for a while and now with the Leopard upgrade offer this is a great deal.....

Almost £200 cheaper than the Apple site with Quidco and Egg.

This could indicate that a new macbook is on the horizon, with the new system out next friday. I'd hold out for a week and see, deals might start popping up all over.

Macs are more expensive mainly due to design of the hardware, the "it just works" policy (not always though !), no messing with drivers for things, you just plug in 95% of electronic gadgets/printers/scanners/modems etc and the computer recognises it. For people who like to tinker with their machines and like games I'd say stick with PC.

I prefer macs as they seem logical, an example: plug something in and it shows up on your desktop, not in drive A, B, C, D or whatever. But I do have a PC for games and certain Apps that macs dont have, also I enjoy tinkering and not replacing the whole machine if I feel the need for a slight upgrade.

Thing is, now you can have both mac and PC all in one with bootcamp which is free as part of Leopard. All the joy of both. Hurrah.

Personally I hate both mac and PC but as I have to use them both, I align myself with neither. Macbooks do give you the advantage of running both and looking cool at the same time so they get my vote.

Still cheaper to buy in US.

Hmm, not convinced about this whole apple thing...

But hot deal if you like apples I guess.

I always recommend macs to my non-anorak mates when they call me in to fix PCs which have been knackered by kids downloading dodgy games, Microsoft updates, or by the stifling heap of **** that is Norton anti-virus. People like these need a simple, clean box that they can just switch on and it works (mostly, nothing's perfect.)

If you want to spend your time playing games, fiddling with settings and fixing glitches, go with Windows. If you just want to switch on your machine and do stuff without worrying too much about the technology, go with Apple.

Speaking as someone with five PCs in the house (of which three are working) and one MacBook.

Better to buy this NOW with tiger osX software as you can get leopard for £6. If there is any flaw in leopard, u can always go back to tiger osX;-)

While I dont wanna encourage the Mac Vs PC argument that could well brew here I just wanna say that one mistake a lot of people make is to simply look at the specs of the main components and not a lot else.

My friend recently got a 17inch Core 2 Duo laptop for a really great price, but I thought it was definately an indicator of you get what you pay for with that laptop. The construction looked flimsy, the quality of the display was very poor with a really lame viewing angle, the thing had a really noisy fan that came on every other minute while he was simply browsing the web. Within 5 minutes I had decided I'd never want one of those things on my desk.

I mention this because I think people dont appreciate the whole package when looking price differences on computers. They see the raw specs of the thing for the price and just assume they can get an identical model for cheaper else where. Its kinda like saying you can get a 4 door car for half the price of a BMW, yeah but they have different levels of design.

Add to this the fact Macs run a different operating system that many users believe totally pummels Windows and you can see why some people are willing to pay the price premium.

I've personally had enough of Windows. I looked at Linux but I dont think its ready yet. So my next computer is going to be a Mac. The more I research the Mac operating system the more I'm amazed that Macs arent more popular. It seems to trounce Windows in every aspect.

But thats my personal opinion. Hope it helps though.

I also think that people should wait. When Apple launches new OS, like Leopard this time, they change specification of existing products, and it's always higher spec for the same or cheaper money. Plus another reason, when Leopard is out this system is going to be outdated, so Dixons and other shops will need to get new lines, so these offers will appear again.

voted hot! good price if you want to wait.

i've had a go on a mac, in the apple store ...

they certainly look the part. thing is, do they operate well? are they virus prone? surely it would take time to adapt coming from windows?

anyway, i've recently bought a new laptop ( HP 6715B ) and wont be upgrading anytime soon as i love my new lappy.

I think that Mac desktops are a bit of a rip. However, I'm a student so I got 15% off when I ordered and a free 3year warranty. So My Macbook cost something like £815 which at the time was better value for money than similar laptops.

i was brought up on pc's all my life. used to buy upgrade parts fit it all myself. in the end got bored of having spam software, virus software, firewall software on my pc. always slowing it down and having to update and hundreds of firewall pop up messages and other cr*p always appearing. desktop gets confussing. then i went mac. out of the box you switch on and can be connected to the web in minutes. So user friendly, so quiet, so beautiful. amazing operating system.

like a aston martin next to a souped up escort cosworth, the aston looks and feels amazing. the cosworth probably tuned to be faster but doesnt look and feel the same. an apple computer is relaxing. no problems , no worries.

anyway way off my post. just a quick thought sometimes what dixsons advertises doesnt always come through. i bought a refurb core2duo 1.8 macbook off dixsons and a coreduo 1,8 arrived. just a word of warning, sometimes they say one thing and sell another.

So you can get the same spec laptop (say made by Sony) for half the price. But just because this is made by apple its better value..

Should this not be in stupidukdeals, com rather than here?

This is not a win vs apple comment, but just the make..

eg,
Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7300 2.0GHz
RAM:2GB
160 Gb
15.4"
Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

for £629

There's no known viruses on mac os x, nor spyware. Norton stopped making their AV for mac because it was pointless.

They certainly do look the part, the other 6 in this house have all got windows machines and none of them are as thin as my macbook and they've all got loads of unnecessary ports crammed in wherever they could. Mine seems to have a bluetooth issue so it'll be going back again, but other than that can't fault it, great little machine

I suppose you could install Windows on it. You have to agree Macbooks look pretty even if you don't like the OS.

If you have to ask why a mac is better you probably are not going to buy one, best bet is go into your local dixons and have a play around with the OS and see if you like the feel of it et

Thats actually a lie. There are known worms and viruses for Macs, just no one bothers writing many due to the limited userbase. Norton stopped making AV for macs because no one bought it, because there aren't many viruses. Treating viruses with apathy like this is very dangerous, even if you do use a mac.

Wrong. The Macbooks are not outdated with Leopard.

Leopard works fine on later G4 systems. And that's a whole 2-3 generation of Apple computers. Leopard would have been designed for Macbooks.

Unless you have a 200-300mhz iBook from 2000, don't expect leopard to run. If you have a 2.0+ core 2 duo, then of course it'll run bleedin fantastically.

But at the end of the day they use completely different operating systems, and thus completely different software, so even if can get identical construction and identical specs for less you still cant argue that the Windows machine is better value for money without ignoring the fact they have different software.

For some people the difference in software makes any price premium on the Mac well worth it. And like I said, I've certainly had enough of Microsofts second rate software so I'm switching to Mac.

And just to confuse matters even more... Macs have a substantially better resale value. So even if you get identical specs at a lower price and decide that the mac software isnt worth the extra, well you could still end up getting better value for money with the Mac. Have you seen the crazy prices even really slow second hand macs go for?

So basically trying to compare them directly is a waste of time. Just buy whatever you think will serve you best. For me thats a Mac. And it dont make me stupid to think that :whistling:

If you must, you can install Windoze using Boot Camp (free from Apple) on a drive partition. That way you effectively have two computers in one.

Actually, the very fact that you get 1000s of Mac users going on about how immune they are to viruses makes them a very high prestige target. Anyone who successfully wrote a nasty Mac virus would make a name for themselves that would last decades.

Whether or not you agree with that theory, what is agreed upon by the tech experts is that Windows is very susceptible to viruses and spyware because of its underlying design, not just because its the most popular OS out there. Unix based operating systems on the other hand like Linux and OSX are just more secure, because of the way Unix is designed.

Still cheaper to buy in US.

In the US, you'd have to get there, you'd also be paying local taxes or liable to pay VAT if you brought it back. However, if you avoided the tax then your plane ticket isn't free, your keyboard wouldn't have the pound sign and the charger would be a US one. Simply not worth it.

Sorry, but what are you on about? That's not half the price, the laptops are also not the same. The build quality is a distance apart, the processor is slower, it doesn't have a slot loading drive. Stop trolling.

It's a common mis-conception, Macs are no over-priced.

It's a hot deal because it's the cheapest around, people buy and use Macs, myself included.

However, this line of Macs will be updated at the end of the month when Leopard is released, likely to be a processor upgrade, but worth waiting all the same. Plus, Leopard pre-installed, no need spend more on upgrading.

Well, glad to know you are know what the truth is!!! Have you ever used a Mac? Also, care to elaborate on what these purported worms are viruii are? Would love you to name an actual one!!!

I'm a hardcore IT user (both Mac and Win) and have NEVER come across a Mac OS X virus in the past, oh 7-8 years or so. What you are mentioning are purely proof-of-concept worm/virus which have never spread in the wild. The main reason for it isn't that no one bothers writing them, but because Mac OS X is a Unix variant (Linux is another), which are much stronger/secure architecture than anything ever would from Mirco$oft; its not by security by coincidence but rather by design! Ever wonder why ALL mission-critical systems (banking, networks, infrastructure) never rely on Winblows c**p?

As other posters have pointed out, you get what you pay for, but if you don't want the aggravation or hassle of messing with setting or driver conflicts or what not, go for Macs. They Just Work, both in software and hardware! The ease of use of Mac OS X application is legendary, and truly so!

Off course, if you have the inclination to go hardcore, you can tinker with the Unix underpinning of Mac OS X all you want.

EDIT: As others have pointed out, using Apple's Bootcamp, you can install Winblows on another partition and can then boot into one or the other system. Or using the application called Parallels, you can run Winblows from within Mac OS X, negating the need for reboot. I often use the latter on my iMac to visit some crummy Windoze/Internet Explorer website...
Also, Windows Vista has 'new' features which have been in OSX for a few years (so much for Micro$oft innovation), and Leopard OS is a preview of what Windoze will be in 3-4 years... Don't believe me, then have a look at apple.com/mac…sx/ or go visit your Apple retailer or even any of the free seminar at your local Apple store (see list at apple.com/uk/…il/)

Maybe I was not clear. But I wanted to say that when Apple launches new Operating system, they also launch upgraged products, not because of it necessary, just to make it more attractive, and because they are aware that they overprice their machines. Leopart will work on previous machines, no questions.
