Nice and simple bike this, rigid fork, 1 X 8 speed, easy to maintain rim brakes and a steel frame should give it a smooth ride.
    Heat.

Im not a weight obsessive but 14.5kg seems pretty heavy for a basic bike?

Well it's a steel frame and fork which will always be heavy but should result in a smooth ride, obviously if you do lots of hill climbs or want to accelerate quickly this isn't a bike for that. But it will be strong so good for larger riders that might bend/crack aluminium frames over time. Also you don't want to be carrying it up stairs or steps. Otherwise steel is tried, tested, and good value and should last if the welding is decent and protected from water damage (rust). Chromoly would be preferable but pricier. I think this would make a good pub bike or beater that you don't need to worry about catching too much attention when locking it up.

    Great bike!

got one for the wife a few years ago,

it’s won’t go up mountains or win the tour de france

but for occasional  trips up and down old rail ways and canal paths it’s great

simple reliable 8 speed gears and v brakes,
