Yes, there is an expected SSD chip shortage in 2017

Wanted to add that two weeks ago Windows started giving me constant warnings saying that my hard disk is going to fail.

why would you buy this over the crucial mx300 525gb from amazon for £116?

No disrespect intended but i've never heard of Windows saying that your hard disk is gong to fail.... that seems very much like a virus to me..

I wouldn't..

This is not that hot. Hynix a decent brand (Hyundai electronics) also responsible for drevo brand I think. But it's not cheap compared to a crucial mx300 which at full price is still cheaper and which has the nice 3D VNAND structure like the Samsung 850.

It's a cold from me.

Usually it's the other way for me, Windows saying "everything's fine, nothing to worry about" then when I finally get some SMART data out of it it's all 'Reallocated sectors: 90% of the disk is broken'.

Event viewer will show errors if it can't write to the disk properly

Sorry, I made a mistake, the drive in the failing system is Sandisk 120gb.
