I always struggled to find a cheap laptop with an decent processor and an SSD, and of course now that I don't need one a deal has come up for one.

It is £298.99 with the cashback from the site, I have used them many times before for other computer component.

If you're a student or need something for the kids to work on, this is perfect and with the specs it'll be fast enough to handle most applications. You could always add a little more RAM if needed.

It's my first post so hope this benefits someone

They look ok for the price. Heat
4gb with the SSD should run great for the casual user.

I know, I wouldn't want to try media editing or gaming on it, but everything else is great for a cheap full-size laptop with a proper processor rather than a tablet/phone processor some of the cheap ones use
I might even grab a few for work users. Cheers OP
HP cashback is a pain. I've done it once and got it eventually, but you really need to remind them several times. They hope you'll forget, imo.
I've done hp cashback & trade in before on laptops & printers & not had a problem, applied for it, done the paperwork and money appeared in bank

"I always struggled to find a cheap laptop with an decent processor and an SSD"

HDD is easiest part to upgrade (and RAM)
Just look at processor and GFX card

Yes, it's ideal to find the perfect unit, but if it ticks all boxes but the hard drive, it's no biggie.

I thought the same way but I kept reading about SSD and my lappy was getting sluggish (500gb sata). I found a tut for my exact model on YouTube and did the job myself.

As for the deal, doesn't look bad for the price, have some heat. I notice it says No Optical Drive in description but appears to be one in images

COLD for me. No laptop in 2018 should have anything other than a 1080p IPS screen.

The Acer Swift 1 for around £250 is better value than this.

Is that a good deal? Looking for a laptop at the moment. Don't really know anything about them though which is my problem.
Good laptop for everyday use, heat
Good price if you don't care about screen resolution. Upgrading requires the back to be removed which is stupid. Manual here.

The processor gives it about a 15% speed boost over the other deal (According to CPUBoss using similar processors) so a good deal there too

Can't find it that cheap, and with half the storage and it not being upgradable/expandable, I don't feel its better. Screen resolution while looking at Facebook and cat videos probably isn't that important for a casual user.

Both are similar, the Currys one is about 15% faster, but if you don't have a laptop to trade it probably isn't worth the premium

Re: currys.co.uk/gbu…tml
I'd say this is better than the HP, primarily because the screen is better but because its just a (bit) better brand at this price level. Note its got a smaller screen but that may be fine you you. NB. Like the HP, upgrading is tricky because you have to take the bottom off (there's no service hatch. Grrrrrr.)

Screen quality is one of the most important things since you look at the screen every time you turn the computer on and could be spending hours in front of it. SSD is aso upgradeable on the Acer.

Both are lightyears better than this HP.

Resolution doesn't make a good screen in and of itself. I can happily use my MacBook Air for hours and that has a supposedly lowly screen

There are refurbs not new and only about half the cpu power of the i3.

It's still a light years better and more well rounded laptop than this HP, even as a refurb. Built well, aluminium chassis, no moving parts, nothing to go wrong. Top quality screen compared to this HP. The CPU is fine - does your basic every day tasks perfectly well. Putting an i3 into something like the HP is little more than marketing to hook people who don't know any better because it's not as you'd be using this to edit 4K videos in Adobe CC.

It's certainly a factor but the simple fact is the 1080p IPS panel used in the Swift 1 is lightyears better than the fuzzy, colour shifting cheapo TN panel found in the HP. They skimped in the wrong area.

EDIT: TO BE CLEAR, I'M TALKING ABOUT THE LENOVO ON CURRYS, not the laptop in the OP.

---
It's not just the screen that's smaller, this thing is dinky. Somewhere between the netbooks of yesteryear, and a proper laptop. It's got a really premium feel to it too. The i3-7100U won't set the world on fire, but it's certainly nippy enough for most people's everyday stuff.

Minor annoyances:

Power button is a normal key directly above the backspace key. Whoever thought that up must have REALLY hated inaccurate typists. Cruel and unusual.

Only one proper USB 3.0 port, although there's a powered USB 2.0 port on the right-hand side, and USB-C on the left too which is nice.

No Ethernet port, but that's an understandable sacrifice at this size. Nothing a combo USB 3.0 + Gigabit Ethernet hub won't sort, and they pair perfectly with the USB-C port. It's got 1 × 1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFI and Bluetooth 4.1 + HS, which does the job.

It's a bloomin' bargain at the price.

First thing I did was wipe the drive and reinstall Windows given Lenovo's past shenanigans. You need to supply drivers for the Intel RST Premium thingy (Press F6-style - grab the f6flpy-x64.zip from Intel and unzip it onto the install flash drive). After that, it was smooth sailing.

I'd vote hot if it wasn't ebuyer.
nice my parents are after a new laptop for surfing the web etc nowt special just their old acer is slowing right down so its either new or a load of work for me on a 10 year old laptop
I just bought costco.co.uk/Ele…062

Have to say, the Lenovo 320S linked above is a vastly better deal. There may be even better ones out there, but in the Lenovo you've got one that Curry's has in stock and will deliver to you the next day. Say what you want about their sales staff (probably best not to - it would get censored), but I've never had a problem with warranty or returns at Currys.

I bought the Yoga version of it for £50 more for my wife and she loves it. The Yoga has the hinge and the case is a bit more... premium, but the guts of the two are the same.
Is there room to fit a second SSD in this?. If not would you be able to take the SSD out and put a bigger new one in with our loosing your windows license?.

Thanks in advanced.
same deal with Lenova at Currys PC World and cheaper by £20
Bought a similar spec for the same price 2 years back, I don't think this is anything special.

No it`s not the price is the same £329-99

Also the Lenovo has got full HD at 1920 x 1080

pcworld.co.uk/gbu…tml
Lenovo is selling it at the same price, but if you've got an old laptop under 7 years old you can trade it in I've ordered one from PC World for pickup, but I don't need to pick it up for 28 days (mine's too old for the deal, sadly).
I'm just wondering if I should wait to pick it up to see if there are any better deals in Easter sales..
Knowing that lot, they`ll probably put the price up for Easter.

Big thread here about the Lenovo from Jan 2018.

Hi. How do I trade in my old laptop for this deal.
OP .. it would help you + everyone else out, if you mentioned somewhere/put your Deal forward in someway as an HP Laptop?.

(As nowhere in your Deal anywhere makes mention of it being an HP Device ... you're more likely to get more heat for your future Deal's via sticking to such simple principles, etc?).

That my 2 Cents worth to you anyway. :-)

Good Deal by the way. :-)
When I wondered if I could get a better deal in Easter sales, I didn't mean from Curry's but from anywhere. But I don't have to pick it up for 28 days and can still cancel 14 days after I pick it up, so I'll just wait.

To be fair, I don't mind buying electronics from CEX because they have the 2 Year Warranty, but some people would probably be put off buying second hand
