SCH Trade have dropped their price on pretty much every B grade notebook they stock. I managed to sell out their stock of another model in yesterdays deal, so for anyone still wanting what is a good bargain this model still has a good amout of ram to work with.

****To get the price just do the following****

- add to basket
- enter code 'DAFFODIL' at the checkout screen without quotes

Overall a pretty nice spec for a 12inch laptop built like a brick with
good battery life for under £100

RAM 2GB
Hard Drive Capacity 80GB
Processor Type Core 2 Duo
Processor Clock Speed 2GHz

Hardware you will need

Cheap charger - £5.99 or 6.99

**UPDATE** - I no longer recommend the cheap ebay chargers. I have gotten myself the following model at £13 and rate it well. Several other people have purchased the same model and report no issues unlike the old recommendations listed below which have a tendancy to stop working. Click here for the Leicke charger. There are 2 versions of the charger 1 with 2 USB ports to charge other devices and one without. The additional USB ports do add to the overall cost.

There are 2 options for chargers you need to consider 90w or 65w depending on your needs

£6.99 Charger - NOT RECOMMENDED TO BUY
The above is a 90w model that is bulkier and heavier but allows you to use the laptop without the processor being throttled if the battery is not inserted. Further reading here

£5.99 Charger - NOT RECOMMENDED TO BUY
The above is the 65w model that is smaller and more portable, but will throttle the laptops processor to 66% if the battery is not installed.

Replacement battery - £12.99 or £14.69

The supplied battery should last over an hour, again you have 2 choices a 4 cell that fits flushly with the body of the laptop or an 8cell that sticks out the back. The main difference is that the 8 cell lasts twice as long.

Optional items

Ultrabase with DVD - £11.99 - £15.99

The ultrabase is not entirely required but does add some useful features. Be careful when buying as there are 2 versions of the Ultrabase X6, one for the X61T (tablet), and this one for the standard X61 and the X61s.

£15.99 Ultrabase X6

---O- The Astec123 Turbo guide to the Ultrabase X6 -O---

General information about the x6 ultrabase and it's features can be found here.

All these ultrabase SLIM devices are supported in the bases DVD slot.

The battery option is available in the ultrabase x6 that supports the x61 and x61s. However, it's generally very expensive add on but one worth considering when picking up an ultrabase.

To add a SATA disk you will need the correct caddy which can be had for £7 from Malaysia.NOT COMPATIBLE WITH X6 (X61) ULTRABASE

Another important point, if you buy one second hand is to check if the keys are supplied. Not a major issue if they are not as they are not needed unless you want to prevent the base being taken off the laptop.

Click here for sorting out the key issue.

As you can see they are really useful to set up on a desk at home with the charger, then you just undock the laptop and walk away. Then to return home, simply redock the laptop and it will charge up.

My guide of what to do when you get your laptop

Right, now everyone's gone a new X61 coming to them, I suppose it's time to run through the things to check on the laptop once it arrives to ensure it's in good order. If anyone think's I've missed something important please mention it and I shall update.

1. Check the plastics and casing of the laptop, the x61 will likely have had abuse over it's life and the best sign of this is the plastics, check the for hairline cracks and take a good look at all the corners. Have a good check around the power cable area as a loose power cable connector is a good sign of a possible problem in the future. Be sure to check your windows COA sticker is intact.

2. Loose hinges are pretty common on this model but the screen should hold itself up. While you are looking at this make sure the lid catches are working and present as these are a common thing to be damaged.

3. Check the keyboard for signs of any spillage, the x61 has drain holes so it is unlikely to have been a problem, but it's a key place where dried gunk will build up if it has had to be used and if it has not been cleaned properly it would be worth doing a decent job of cleaning.

4. Boot up and load the BIOS by pressing the blue ThinkVantage button when the message "To

Quality bit of kit. Way better than a Netbook. Dead easy to slap Ubuntu on there too.

Excellent price.

This is not built like a brick. Whoever wrote this "brick metaphor" needs to go back to school to learn that metal is stronger than brick, so the wrong metaphor was used. This is built with stronger materials than brick, they are metal alloys (for chasis, lid, hinges). Sadly no matter how it was built like a "brick" or "tank" the human hands have bedevilled these to B grade, C grade or even complete wreck.

So far I've bought 4 of these and set them up with Windows 7 and 4gb of ram on each one for the kids, they love them and they're definetely netbook killers.

Not bad would get one myself but just bought a new mobile so not wise at moment lol. Heat added.

Sometimes refurbished can be hit and miss on quality but will take a punt at that price.
Thanks.

2ghz processor? I'm sold. Have some heat.

EDIT: personally i need 3GB Ram minimal. Thanks for the website, I'll ever just upgrade the Ram or look for another model

Ordered one, my back up laptop has a temperamental screen and often needs to be hooked up to an external monitor, so for this price I couldn't resist.

Thanks, OP, for details in first post... looking forward to seeing what condition it arrives in

Just be sure to get yourself a power adapter at the very least, I'd definately advise a new battery to get the most out of the unit when away from the mains too.

Some for sale threads on here give a good idea of condition these usually are in when received

Thanks, I've ordered a charger, I'll hold off on ordering a battery until I see the condition of the unit.

To be honest, if the screen isn't significantly marked, I won't be too bothered if the casing is tatty at this price.

I've never heard of anyone getting a machine from SCH where it doesnt have a wifi card and every one I've come across who has one has said they have a fingerprint reader. If there are any problems SCH are very good at dealing with issues.

Great piece of kit - I got one when they went UHU (under hundred) the first time about a year ago, and it has been good every since. I just installed Windows 7 on it, and in fact I am using it right now. My only niggle is the lack of a touch pad, but even I have to admit that the track stick is superb. My battery was nearly new (obviously a replacement), but the display backlight is a bit dim (from use, I guess). This is by far the most laptop you can get for the price.

Thanks. (_;)

Ohh yes and I am thinking ps1 & maybe 2 emulation machine.

where on checkout screen do I add code ?

very good kit for the price, I got one from SCH about 6 months ago and great for the money. Just worth mentioning that these do not have a track pad on them and just have the point which is fine for me but I know some people have them.

Looks like a bargain, thanks OP!

very thorough post OP. just unsure about a laptop without a trackpad.. if you're ok with stick, external mouse, or keyboard shortcuts then I guess it's good?

ordered one . thanks.

Thanks OP. Never bought a grade B before. Have gone for this. I hope I won't be disappointed. Went for this charger though as some of the ebay one's I have bought for other things have been iffy.

Perhaps you should invest in some smaller mugs.

There are two of these listed that have exactly the same specs does anybody know if there's any difference?

These are good machines and solid. I have one (bought from ebay for similar money), performance is decent for the minimal cost.

My only two criticisms are that the palmrest of the laptop can get warm, (I believe due to the wifi card), and the other is, although well built they can look a bit scruffy because of the matte finish it has.

I also have a Dell D430 of a similar age which looks tidier and has a touchpad, but otherwise I prefer the performance and the screen aspect ratio (4:3) of the Thinkpad.
