SCH Trade have dropped their price on pretty much every B grade notebook they stock. I managed to sell out their stock of these in 2 previous posts, so for anyone still wanting what is a good bargain this model still has a good amout of ram to work with.

****To get the price just do the following****

- add to basket
- enter code 'DAFFODIL' at the checkout screen without quotes

Overall a pretty nice spec for a 12inch laptop built like a brick with
good battery life for under £100

RAM 2GB
Hard Drive Capacity 80GB
Processor Type Core 2 Duo
Processor Clock Speed 2GHz

My complete revision of my guide - Feel free to repost if needed but please credit me if you use some or part of it

LOADS OF DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS MACHINE IS AVAILABLE ON THE OLD THREAD. CLICK HERE. If you've got any questions most of us have already received our units so feel free to ask there.

Hardware you will need

Cheap charger - £5.99 or 6.99

There are 2 options for chargers you need to consider 90w or 65w depending on your needs

£6.99 Charger
The above is a 90w model that is bulkier and heavier but allows you to use the laptop without the processor being throttled if the battery is not inserted. Further reading here

£5.99 Charger
The above is the 65w model that is smaller and more portable, but will throttle the laptops processor to 66% if the battery is not installed.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Replacement battery - £12.99 or £14.69

The supplied battery should last over an hour, again you have 2 choices a 4 cell that fits flushly with the body of the laptop or an 8cell that sticks out the back. The main difference is that the 8 cell lasts twice as long.

Optional items

Ultrabase with DVD - £11.99 - £15.99

The ultrabase is not entirely required but does add some useful features. Be careful when buying as there are 2 versions of the Ultrabase X6, one for the X61T (tablet), and this one for the standard X61 and the X61s.

£15.99 Ultrabase X6

---O- The Astec123 Turbo guide to the Ultrabase X6 -O---

General information about the x6 ultrabase and it's features can be found here.

All these ultrabase SLIM devices are supported in the bases DVD slot.

The battery option is available in the ultrabase x6 that supports the x61 and x61s. However, it's generally very expensive add on but one worth considering when picking up an ultrabase.

To add a SATA disk you will need the correct caddy which can be had for £7 from Malaysia.

Another important point, if you buy one second hand is to check if the keys are supplied. Not a major issue if they are not as they are not needed unless you want to prevent the base being taken off the laptop.

Click here for sorting out the key issue.

As you can see they are really useful to set up on a desk at home with the charger, then you just undock the laptop and walk away. Then to return home, simply redock the laptop and it will charge up.

My guide of what to do when you get your laptop

Right, now everyone's gone a new X61 coming to them, I suppose it's time to run through the things to check on the laptop once it arrives to ensure it's in good order. If anyone think's I've missed something important please mention it and I shall update.

1. Check the plastics and casing of the laptop, the x61 will likely have had abuse over it's life and the best sign of this is the plastics, check the for hairline cracks and take a good look at all the corners. Have a good check around the power cable area as a loose power cable connector is a good sign of a possible problem in the future. Be sure to check your windows COA sticker is intact.

2. Loose hinges are pretty common on this model but the screen should hold itself up. While you are looking at this make sure the lid catches are working and present as these are a common thing to be damaged.

3. Check the keyboard for signs of any spillage, the x61 has drain holes so it is unlikely to have been a problem, but it's a key place where dried gunk will build up if it has had to be used and if it has not been cleaned properly it would be worth doing a decent job of cleaning.

4. Boot up and load the BIOS by pressing the blue ThinkVantage button when the message "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button " is displayed. Check that there is no supervisor password set, if there is one set this will likely cause you issues later so be sure to get in contact with SCH about this. While in the BIOS it's a good time to check the basic configuration of your machine is all correct by scrolling through the menus.

5. After you've installed windows (guide in the first post) and installed the drivers from the Lenovo site, it would be a good time to check everything is working. Check the device manager that everythings working as expected.

6. A bit of stress testing would be a good idea to be sure it's all working on the inside as needed. I would recommend

Very welcome, if you've purchased, feel free to discuss it or ask questions in the other thread (now well over 400 comments).

Many thanks Astec missed out last time

Ordered - using MBNA CC however it does mention credit or debit card (processed securely by paypal)

My visa is linked with my paypal a/c so I guess should be ok...

Listing ended on the 5.99 charger...

Would this this one be a good alternative?

Yes it would be fine but you will need the clover leaf connector end that goes to the wall socket with that one. I'll update the link with a working one in a minute.

I love your self gratification, " I managed to sell out their stock".

Heat none the less. Was going to buy these before, but for some reason didn't... I could have sworn their was a 2.5ghz model last time =(

Link updated, same seller as I had an excellent experience buying with them when I asked to upgrade from the lower wattage PSU to the 90W.

The thing is I did! And not just once but twice, I think I sold them out of about 300 units! - It's quite addictive posting good deals that actually get heat.

You may have seen a HP machine they had a while ago with a 2.5ghz processor.

If I were you, I'd stop being the middle man and start selling my own discounted laptops. I got a strong feeling that you could do a better job x

EDIT: damn, I really did miss a 2.5ghz laptop Even though this is a great deal, it still burns.....

Yea I'm currently working hard on making my own way in my career path through to my dream job and have an interview for the next step up to my dream job soon. I did once consider selling refurb laptops like SCH do but discounted it due to a lack of capital at the time and that I thought it would take all the fun out of tinkering with technology.

As for the 2.5ghz laptop it was not a good deal at the price they wanted.

Finally I can at least give some heat as I joined the fun after the last lot were expired.. Great work by Astec123

why so @n@l about this deal, I reckon you work at this deals site and you wanna shift the crap!

Edited by: "Deelon" 26th Mar 2013

Word of advice: Don't buy cheap PSU's. The prices may be attractive but it is far better to buy a used genuine IBM/Lenovo charger as the cheap import numbers on ebay are not well made (cheap components, unreliable voltages, run hot as hell), and are likely to fail sooner rather than later. And when they finally do go pop (sometimes quite literally) they can take the laptop out with it.

Cheapo Batteries are relatively safe (shouldn't damage the laptop when they fail), but they will not last way too long either in my experience (again cheap components, cheap cells, etc). Genuine batteries cost a lot though so it' s a balancing act of how many cheap ones you might get through vs one genuine one.

SCH do ship with genuine batteries though (have bought several laptops from them and they are were genuine), however the wear level will vary (best I've seen was just 2% wear level, worst has been around 20%).

Well here are the Passmark scores of both:
Intel Core Atom N270 @ 1.60GHz =315
Intel Core2 Duo T7300 @ 2.00GHz =1227

So in theory four times quicker but remember CPU speed isn't everything and the HDD will hold this back.

Oh, to clarify:

what I meant, is the while the CPU on this a lot faster the hard disk on this about the same speed. So 'hold back' is not quite the right words.

Much better if you ask me as I upgraded to this from my NC10. Easier to use for web browsing and typing which was my main reason for getting the NC10 in the first place.

Very welcome. There were a few who commented in the other thread that they would want one, so I've reposted for that very reason to give those who missed the first 2 threads another chance.

Maybe next time before you start nay saying you should do some research as I have said in many threads what county I live in and that it also happens to be quite some distance away from where SCH are based. I'm sure if you read the previous thread it would be self evident that I could not possibly be working for the company as I asked a number of questions from others who have purchased from SCH previously about delivery.

Cheap PSUs are just that and you take them for their face value....CHEAP. However, I have genuine laptop charges that run hotter than the cheap one I have gotten and it's considered normal for high drain devices under load. You get what you pay for in the end and most people just wont fork out for an official charger.

As for the batteries, compared to a Lenovo official cell you can get 3-4 unoffical ones for the same sort of money and overall you would end up with a better overall run time available to you, plus at £15 a pop they are cheap enough to be affordable to replace when they do die.

As for the batteries, totally agree on the points you make as the previous deal linked in my first post shows. There are a mix of total duds on arrival and others like myself reporting good batteries when they have been supplied. However, SCH have always been praised for their customer service in previous threads on replacing DOA batteries.

Definately a lot quicker, I updated mine to a 7200rpm drive on arrival

My Windows experience index ratings are as follows (not exactly an example of the best way to measure but a good gauge).

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz 4.8
Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB 4.8
Graphics Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family 3.5
Gaming graphics 358 MB Total available graphics memory 3.5
Primary hard disk 167GB Free (298GB Total) 5.4

So if anything the bottleneck on these is the graphics side. My NC10 got a rating of 2.2 overall.

Thanks you dudes its probably the same as i paid for the nc10 so Looks a good Call.

Jeez... I suppose that I work at SCH as well considering the amount of deals I posted in the past.

SCH are incredibly cheap if you're in the market for refurbing machines, which is a hobby I enjoy TBH... their CS is excellent and they offer free courier delivery.

These things are great, I have another ordered. Thanks again, OP.

Anyone have experience of the returns process? Is it hassle free, do they reimburse return postage?

Sold out again! well done astec123

Mine is almost new and the battery lasts a happy 3-4 hours on high performance mode watching movies! or 5hrs + on balanced mode!

Anyone can tell me what sort of times they are getting?

What is the typical battery times when they were new?

Thank you, I only do it because it drives me mad seeing good deals being voted cold all the time because the poster has not bothered to put in a bit of effort to put the important information up. This tied with what I've said earlier about researching my purchase extensively beforehand meant I had pretty much all the links and information to hand so it made sense to make it tidy looking in order to make my own life easier to get the bits I needed when my X61 arrived.

Currently out of stock, shot thru the heart!

Keep an eye out, they keep coming back in sock a few units at a time. This is one of 3 threads for pretty much the same deal I've posted over the last week and SCH have sold at least a good 300+ units in that time.

Great post, I ordered one with just 2 units left!
Noodler, how do you work out the wear level of the battery?
Cheers

Shipped (TNT)

Further to my previous post...
I ordered a B Grade T61 and the battery is DOA (first dead one they have sent me, so I went and talked that one in...). I've not had to contact their CS before, but I've emailed them about it and hope they will send a replacement battery without fuss.

No idea, never had to request one. There have been a couple of people discussing replacement DOA batteries on the other thread linked to below in the past few days.

May I suggest anyone with any questions about their machine has a look at the older thread and asks any questions there. There are a lot more people subscribed to it and most have received their units so can probably provide a lot of help to anyone in need of it.
