Hello, I work at asda. This is not a nationwide deal. There was an offer on iceberg lettuce from the end of last week for 50p (that offer ended today/tomorrow). The company sent huge quantities of it to almost every store and it didn't sell. Most of it was dated Monday, so the stores had to get rid of it by doing a bulk markdown. Ours was at 5p, we had to shift almost 60 cases of the stupid stuff on Monday.

Some other stores may have a large amount dated Wednesday, and *may* have to mark it down..

edit: I might add that the quality of this lettuce is pretty poor. We threw away quite a few of them (basically, they'd been sitting there for 4-5 days).

There may also be something on cucumbers and 6pack salad tomatoes, as they are in the same 50p offer, but not as many of those were sent in and they shift pretty quick.

5P in Carlisle

Wow thats pretty bad, why did asda order so many if they didnt think it would sell? :-s

Kinda cr*p for the farmer who spent ages growing it. I still havent got over asda over charging me 52p, im watching them carefully now thinking they are going to fall from grace :-D

They always do it. If something goes on offer, it will sell more, obviously. Iceberg lettuce will sell regardless of whether it's on offer, as long as it's hot outside. So they should have sent 50% more at most. Instead, we probably had around 400% more. If it was something like strawberries that suddenly went down to half price, they would barely even touch the shelf.

They do this crap all the time. For no reason at all, we will randomly get 200-500% more of any particular line in all of a sudden. Beans - we sell probably 2 cases of each one a day. Last week, they sent us 8 in 1 day. No reason, no explanation, they just turned up. Needless to say that those beans just sit there for a few days, so if you want to buy them, you're not getting fresh stuff for the next few days. i think that once they buy it from the farmers, they've gotta do something with it, so just send it out.

What did they charge you 52p for?
