Impartial MOT at Local Authority Test Centres

Let me say first of all, I want no credit for this. But I would like to thank kneale81 for the post 2 years ago (now marked as expired). The reason for reposting is to make people aware who may have missed that old post. I have just put a 12 year old Focus into my local Council MOT centre, somewhat reluctantly since advice from two other garages was basically dont even bother (God I hate some mechanics). Lo and behold, apart from a £20 link arm it flew through. Since they don't do any remedial work, there's no pressure and no bull. Fees may vary but mine was £37 with a free retest, but do check with your centre before you book. Thanks again kneale81, I owe you.

I've copied this from the original post (which was over two years ago) (thanks Kneale81) so it may well be out of date

Bit of a journey to get one!
MSE
not a government test centre but California mot centre in gomersal near Batley and birstall is good. they only do mots they are pretty impartial.
great stuff, thanks!
always use Halton Council at Widnes, never had a fail, only advice such as tyres. very good
So why was the original deal expired? I will bare this in mind next year.
I've found Mr clutch to be pretty good too and very cheap. The reason they are good is because they cannot do a lot of the repair work that comes about from an MOT fail.
in northern ireland u only have the option of gov run mot but every major town has one. far better set up its about 35 for a test and about 18 for a retest if u fail and have to get something done. lads at my local one are great cause if u are borderline on something but good enough to pas that year they will tell u and let u know it needs fixed for the following year
So if you take it to one of these centres and it fails, what happens next? If they don't do repairs is it still legal to drive it away? Or do you have to book it in straight away

Surely that would only be a problem if you were getting the MOT done after its expired. In which case you should only be driving it direct to the MOT station and that station should be the closest one to you.

Damn the 3 month wait for the Glasgow one! Oh well. Just gonna have to get a rip off mot done as usual.
wow, i didnt know i have "local authorities", lol. Someone had strong appeal to authority type of programming.
Telford Centre at Donnington is the bomb 3 cars all passed...............really nice people and very helpful
Thank you for the post btw x
We used the Wandsworth one on Monday to get a Defender done - no problems and they were very friendly - even offered to open early and do it so I could collect it and go to work rather than having to come back at the end of the day.
A very excellent motoring website Honestjohn has been banging on about this for years.

I am using this council MOT centre from last 2 years without any issues.
price is £54.85
Thanks for this.

For you at the centre you picked. From the OPs description:

Fees may vary but mine was £37 with a free retest, but do check with your centre before you book.
I've only had 3 cars in nearly 35 years of motoring and I've only had my current car 2 years. That means I have mostly run old cars.

In my experience chains like National and Kwik Fit are trustworthy, and I have had several instances of my two ancient Ford Fiestas needing nothing doing at MOT time.
this is where i go for the mot they charge £35 free retest.
The MOT shop in York does the same thing.
Any non repair mot center is fair as they don't have an interest in failing you.

thats right but there quick enough to recommend somewhere
Just got one £25 at Kwik fit, passed no probs.Booked online plus there is a discount code too. Can't remember last time I paid over £30 for an mot?? They can't really fail it incorrectly. Too easy for you to get it checked elsewhere and they'll lose their licence if proved wrong, not worth it. If they pass you and have some advisory suggested work, just say no.
I've used my local council MOT for years, with the idea being that it's good to get an independent second opinion before I get the car serviced (so that I know if the car is OK before I take it to a money making garage). However last year the MOT failed on a tiny bulb above the rear license plate not working (can't believe they can be failed on such a minor thing, but I guess it's a police requirement to see a lit-up license plate at night). Because the council garage didn't have any spares and didn't know how (or want to) access that bulb as it requires removing a panel, I had to bring it back at the next available slot (approximately 4 days later) for a re-test after getting the bulb replaced.

So basically I spent some hours of my day getting the first MOT (this meant some time off work). I then had to take it to Halfords so I could get a replacement light and ask them to put it in for me (more of my own time). I then had to spend another hour of a different day getting the second (albeit much quicker) MOT done.

Life is too short for all of this imo. This year I got the MOT done at the same time as the service, had no issues and no hassles. Plus if you don't trust whoever you're using to service your car, then you may as well find a new place.
Mentioned on MSE for ages.
This is nothing new, been around for years.

Once a vehicle fails an MOT, any current MOT on that vehicle is void. So driving it away could have insurance and legal implications.

No the current MOT would not be void...but driving an unroadworthy vehicle may be a separate offence.

Driving a vehicle that’s failed

You can take your vehicle away if your MOT certificate is still valid.

If your MOT has run out you can take your vehicle to:

have the failed defects fixed
a pre-arranged MOT test appointment
In both cases, your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined.

https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/after-the-test

Not very clear that, but the current MOT is defo not voided.

The point being that, if your car is unroadworthy, it's unroadworthy irrespective of a garage telling you. You could get an MOT done today and it for whatever reason becomes unroadworthy tomorrow. That doesn't invalidate the MOT, it just puts you at risk of a different offence.
