Yes I know the series is definitely not politically correct and it would never be made these days so if you are easily offended it's probably best to avoid it as a lot of his views and rants are definitely not acceptable particularly his ehm, well "choice" name for his gay, male home help Winston. However I think what the makers were aiming for was people to laugh at Alf Garnett for being so ridiculous rather than agreeing with him but quite a lot of people seem to miss this

The complete Series One to Six of Johnny Speight's sequel to the classic 1960s comedy 'Till Death Us Do Part', featuring old big mouth himself, Alf Garnett (Warren Mitchell). Times have changed for Alf, with Else (Dandy Nichols) having died, he has had to get used to life as a widower, finally having to look after himself and cook his own meals - unless he can get his landlady from upstairs, Mrs. Hollingbery (Carmel McSharry), to do it for him.

The series relentlessly mocked Alf Garnett's opinions and rants, but was just about subtle enough for a lot of people to miss it, for them Alf was a bit of a hero!

Think that's the point that is often missed as as you say it is quite subtle but we used to sit laughing at Alf Garnett for being so ridiculous during his rants rather than agreeing with his views

Ah ha but noticed you didn't include it in your list of top 5 comedies...lol...to be fair we should probably refer to it as a list of top 5 retro comedies before people start telling us we've missed out Family Guy/Simpsons/Modern Family etc

You're on a roll tonight Tigger with these TV series!

Think I've dropped into full retro mode...I'd better watch out just in case temptation gets the better of me and I suddenly think it's a good idea to put on a leotard, leg-warmers and compulsory head band and start dancing around singing Fame into my hairbrush....lol...
