Seems like a good price for the latest S812 chipset and reasonably future proof, tempted to replace my old WDTV Live with this.

whilst the Fire TV runs xbmc very well, keep in mind that the UK model cannot be (as yet) rooted. For me, this prevents me from adding a VPN app onto it. Others are annoyed they can't use the usb port for playback

Anyone used one? I'm also looking to move from WD but the last 'state of the art' Android box I tried (a MiniX NEO X7 Mini 2) was a total joke and went back after a day...

I very nearly went for one of these boxes but getting a decent review for one can be difficult, instead bought the FTV yesterday at current price if £64 quid I feel excellent value, really easy to side load, just use fire installer android and ping your apps across couldn't be easier, the gui is excellent and the speed and smoothness fantastic. I've downloadef software ready to install Kodi which hopefully I'll get done today. I wasn't aware UK couldn't be rooted but certainly don't need to do this to add any 3rd party apps of Kodi (xbmc). The remote is simple but great, the box even feels superior quality and quite small. I think I'm going to be really happy with this, tried iplayer app and even on WiFi streams beautifully. Think this box will get better and better. Best selling media device on the US thus Christmas. The other android box sellers seem to pride themselves on the fact that Kodi is pre installed, hiwever guides like this make it easy, it's the one I'll be using today. Even seems to have function to root and mount external hard drive if you wish however can't confirm if this will work or not... tvaddons.ag/ins…tv/

why bother put xbmc on ya phone get a Chromecast and just cast screen

I agree with the_ghost. In the day and age of chromecast, these boxes are redundant in my opinion

Not really. How is my girlfriend meant to stream XBMC to Chromecast from her iPhone?

My Fire TV is sat by my TV, has XBMC, YouTube, iPlayer, live TV, Premier League football, Netflix and all works from my TV remote, or my phone. Chromecast is fine if you've got one person, and you want to stream Plex, but then I've got DLNA built into my TV so I could just use that, but I want something a bit more user friendly and with more flexibility. Even Google recognises this, hence the Nexus TV. Otherwise they'd just leave people with Chromecast and be done with it.

ghost is the man , Chromecast is where its at

Wanted to buy WD TV Live to play media and movie files from My Passport. Should I buy the WD TV Live? Is this dated or are there better options?

what about the formats Chromecast can't support?

And then have no use for the phone apart from battery drain whilst casting?

Not a 'One For All' Option there (to be quite honest with you ... ) as it purely depends on your 'angle'? .. if simple 'Media Streaming' is your flavour then Chromecast will be perfect .. but if you want your thang to have more 'meat' to it (as it appears that some of these guys do?), then .....

the way I see it, it depends on the 'Individual' really?

so no 24p playback on this (or chromecast) , anyone ?

Depends purely on what your looking for?.

But all I can tell you is .. a 'Smart Box', or an 'Android Box' will do you BOTH ..... :-)

M8 box also to consider

whilst the WD Live is pretty limited, I still keep mine as it plays HD video from network so well despite having two xbmc boxes

Following on from my last post I also have 3 chromecast which I got for £18 so bargain at the time... although they are great AFTV is in a diff league, I've just installed xbmc, the remote is great and the unit lightening fast, build quality awesome absolutely no regrets...

No optical, but if you've got a remotely modern amp that's not needed … No optical, but if you've got a remotely modern amp that's not needed anyway, it's got 2 USB's (one full size, one micro), a micro sd slot and it came with a usb to LAN adapter as well. You can get the full size boxes the same with LAN, optical etc for under £30 on aliexpress as well anyway.

I stand corrected!
