Cheapest Core 2 Duo I could find, overclock this one to 3GHz and you'll have an amazingly fast system for little money.

There is little real world difference between this chip and a top of the line Core 2 Duo when this chip is overclocked, but the difference in price is huge.

Remember to use google checkout to keep the price low.

Stangely ebuyer have the slower e2140 for more money...?

Its worth bearing in mind however that theres free shipping on the Intel Core 2 Duo E4300, so it works out £62.73 delivered with google checkout for a chip with a 1mb more cache.

I'd go for the Gigabyte DS3 (P35 chipset), but most from Asus, Gigabyte, ABIT, DFI, BFG, EVGA that support this processor will get it to 340 FSB, thus giving you 3GHz with decent cooling.

Also, if you clock this chip to 3GHz it will play games with the best of them. Look at the next page of the review you linked to, SmilingCrow.

The main areas that prefer the larger cache will be encoding films/music, rather than games tbh.

I assume the 1MEG cache models overclock a lot more because they run cooler as they only have one meg cache or are the 2MEG cache models equally overclockable?

The review does show the E2160 (1MB) over-clocked to 3.4GHz beating the X6800 (4MB) at its stock speed of 2.93 GHz in MOST benchmarks. However, that’s not really an Apples to Oranges comparison and if you ran a 4MB C2D at 3.4GHz it would win the test significantly, especially in Games.

The 1MB cache models perform poorly in games when compared with the 2 and 4 MB versions when running at the SAME clock speed. The other applications typically showed much smaller and often insignificant differences including the encoding applications which gained only 3 – 5% when comparing the 1 and 4 MB versions.
The games in comparison gained an average of 17.5% when moving from 1 to 4 MB cache; this was at a speed of 1.8GHz. The difference between the 1 and 2MB chips was ~ 13%.
If you are over-clocking the CPUs to roughly 3.5GHz it is likely that the performance difference between the 1MB chips and the others will grow as the faster they are running, the more data they will need to process and the more the smaller cache size will become a penalty.

So a 13% gain in Games has to be a bargain when you consider the cost difference between the E2160 and E4300 is only £7.

Not at all. The different size cache versions have different properties and this affects their over-clocking potential; the early 4MB cache versions seemed to be have been particularly good. Different batches of chips also over-clock better than others which is why some people chase after chips made at a particular plant in a particular week. The chips have batch codes which allow you to track this data.

The realistic limitation on your over-clocking will be your heatsink, motherboard, RAM and sometimes power supply rather than anything else.

The point they are making is that with little extra expenditure an £50 chip can beat a chip costing many hundreds of pounds. Surely the only mugs game is getting an x6800 and running at stock?
