I wouldn't bother, finding a motherboard cheap will be such a nightmare.

You don't really need practice either, if you can build Lego or Ikea furnature you'll be fine.

I'm running a i7 920 (yes 1st gen!) With a gtx 970 and get 60fps+ on Witcher 3 max (no hairworks).

If you do see some throttle just overclock the CPU

Try to get I5 4th gen if possible. Minimum requirement for VR
dijital:

Not really, there are Core2 processors that are faster that some 4th gen i5 processors.

I c. I was looking at the minimum requirement for VR. Can you please suggest to me good and cheap processor for first build? I am thinking of pairing it with gtx 1060 6gb

Need to check how much a motherboard costs....often old ones hard to get hold of

For practice to build best dismantle and rebuild an old pc

Go for the i5 8400 cpu. It' super fast and is great value at current socket. AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is also a good alternative if you want to be future Proofed.
Is this better than a G3258? anniversary pentium
You will lose how much you saved trying yo get a motherboard for lga 1156

No it won't.

This is probably faster than the pentium 166mhz i was using this morning.....
I'd echo other comments here. The headline price is great but putting together a full system could be very costly and a real headache as this is all very old technology now, you would almost certainly have to buy all the other parts used too and if it won't POST (switch on) you could have real trouble identifying (and returning) the part at fault.

All for saving money anyway possible including buying used but if you do it is far more prudent to stick to newer tech where the parts are still commonly available and more likely to be less heavily used and still performance competitive.

A good way of avoiding much of the headache of putting together a new PC with used parts is to look out for cheap motherboard, CPU and RAM bundles. With these much of the work is done for you and you only need to worry about housing it in a case, powering it and adding storage (and a GPU if needed)....

Is this better than a G3258? anniversary pentium

Nope.
Fantastic price. 1156 boards are hard to get now as they were discontinued about 5 years ago, but if you can get one cheap this would make an excellent budget build (perfect for office work and low end games).

This board would be suitable for anyone looking.

I'm still on 1156 (I have an i7 870). Still performs well and doesn't bottleneck my GTX780.

Not a lot in it (not an exact comparison but close enough chips):
anandtech.com/ben…265

If you've currently got a G3258, your next processor should be a Haswell or Broadwell cpu as you have socket 1150. These will be i3, i5 or i7 processors in the 4xxx or 5xxx series (eg i5-4430). You'll need to check individual processor compatibility with your motherboard manufacturer.
I am still running my Haswell i7 4770 on it's 1150 LGA mobo that is 3 years plus old with a GTX 1080 and i have just hit the sweet spot with my PC.

But this is a great little CPU, and add to it a nice cheap GTX750 and you got yourself a nice middle of the road PC that will run games great and make them look good without having to sell a kidney.

Middle of the road about two-three years ago maybe.
^^^^And that is bad because........lol

And i doubt anybody buying this CPU at £15 will expect it to run The Witcher 3 at 4k 60 fps, but as the core for a cheap middle of the road PC to gain access to a almost unlimited catalogue of great games that will run fine on such a CPU, what is not to like for £15.

Although it's "old technology" it's still ranked as the 409th fastest processor out of 980. So it's not bad but not brilliant.

Agree with this. Just go for it. Plenty of resources on YouTube to hold your hand a bit if you are a bit nervous with the first build.

That site will help you choose compatible parts and also (usually) give the cheapest prices. Remember though they are an affiliate so go through Quidco for cashback of your own.

I've put together several PC's, it really is like building lego and I'm no computer nerd. You can't put anything into the wrong socket. The only trouble you may have is power supply but if your building something barebones I wouldn't even worry about that.
Hu guys I would like to buy a mother board and and i5 for my desktop that works with my ddr3 ram can you recommend a good one to buy please?

Doesn't make it middle of the road, it makes it low-end. I didn't say there was anything wrong with that.

It's just not "middle of the road" that gets peoples expectations up.
I don't get who this is for? If you already have the platform, you most likely have the same or better. If you haven't got the chipset, then it's going to to be very tricky and expensive to get the required mobo, and pointless given how old it is, plus why would you for an i3?

Exactly, that's why it's so cheap. Pick a mobo up for £20 and it could be the base of a very good value low end PC. Very upgradeable too as CEX do an i7 for that socket for £35.

Correct skepticism Fishmaster. Even the best Core2Quad that Intel made is about half as fast as the slowest 4th Gen i5.

I am not the one saying it. I think somehow the comment was deleted. I am asking the same question to the person that stated that. @dijital or sumthng... It's weird because I cannot quoted his statement. (it was deleted)

Good value if all you need is the CPU. This should be hotter than the 3220 deal, more processor for the money and age difference is negligible.

I was wrong, so i deleted the post, you managed to quote me brefore I deleted it

My point was, just because they say 4th gen i5 doesn't mean its a hard requirement, there are plenty of slow 4th gen i5's and plenty of faster earlier generation processors.

In regards to that can it still start the VR if I decided to go for the lower gen but a faster one instead?
