Make sure your motherboard has the new update for this CPU. Mine hadn't been rolled out even though I'd been told it had and I had the 6600k and 7600k both boxed so stuck with the 6600k. The performance increase isn't that much neither between the both of them, only major difference is its better for VR.

​no use in buying a processor if ur a gamer just wait for a upgrade for ur graphics card like i have a gtx 970 when the 1170 comes i will get that cause it will actually show u some results

Yeah it's amazing that a decent CPU from 2012 is still more than enough for most users and more powerful than many of the other new CPU's on offer.

Not much ≠ 40%. Blame AMD for it not being more, but 40% is a pretty big jump.

Same with Intel. If you are getting little for your money don't buy it.

As for upgrading from anything above a 4000 series I wouldn't bother until we see what Ryzen offers.

I'm still rocking a 4790K, I don't expect to have a need for upgrading this for a while. The thing with Intel is they probably do have something locked away, same with Nvidia (1080ti), that they'll bring out if AMD hits it out of the park, for now they are probably just sitting on it because they are making profit anyway.

I haven't seen anything suggesting it's even better for VR. Only thing I've seen is they overclock slightly better.

It's all about the heat - they just can't keep them cool enough.

The days of processing power doubling every 18 months are long gone.

Perhaps AMD would have been in better shape if Intel hadn't used anti competitive tactics to "encourage" OEMs not to AMD chips (Althon v P4 was no contest). That kind of blow takes a LONG time to recover from especially when your opponent is spending billions on R&D to recover any lost ground and then increase its lead through better fab production. If Intel hadn’t acted illegally we might have seen a very different x86 landscape now instead of the 5% drip feed of IPC improvements.

Sadly the bang for your buck just isn't there for these recent CPUs. This may be about 40% faster than a 2500k but it's also about 30%-40% more expensive. Same with my 2700k, it's roughly the same speed as this and I paid about the same price 4 years ago. The CPU market in terms of performance per pound, has been stagnant for some time.

And that's one of the major contributing factors the new PC sales market has declinded over the years. When you only have to upgrade instead of needing to upgrade, PC recycle times increase.

+40% rather optimistic as this has a far higher stock speed and boost than 2500K had.
The tame tech press was rather kind to Intel with this Skylake re-brand, but Eurogamer/DigitalFoundry did do a comparison at the same speed:

Gaming average about +34% and a bit more for non-gaming but that's mainly encoding so because of new instructions etc.
Still, after 5-6 years and 4-6 'generations' (six if you count the Haswell Refresh 'Devil's Canyon' and the Skylake refresh 'Kaby Lake' generations), the gain is about a third. Okay, the 'low-hanging-fruit' has been 'picked' and gaining more IPC is very hard but not even the core-count has gone up (so that people buy LGA-2011 I guess).
The good news: no need to upgrade!

Got one of these at £190 due to a cheeky pricing error. It was definitely a one-off, so not a deal unfortunately!

I cant decide what to get now. I have been patiently waiting for the 6th gen prices to drop and to grab a good motherboard+cpu i5 bundle but prices barely budged. Now I'm seeing the prices of 7th gen pretty much the same as 6th gen, this doesn't make sense!

Still it doesnt make sense. In some instances I found that buying the i5 6600k alone is costing more than an i5 7600k.

I know used will be cheaper but prices for 6th gen should be dropping, not costing more than the next gen that has just come out. Totally baffled by this.

Multi threading has been around since the 1950's. Intel have been using SMT since the Pentium 4, about 15 years ago, so I think you should be fine.

Yes, hyperthreading. I said multi threading because the i5 has 1 thread per core, the i7 has 2 so it has multiple threads per core.
