That's so daft that I had to vote cold.

I've just posted a thread for a compatible motherboard for a system I am about to build and this CPU is on my shopping list. I have found it for £209.99 at Overclockers overclockers.co.uk/int…tml

It has been this price for a while.

Not happy, that this, the motherboard and SSD drives on my list have appeared on HUKD in the last 24hrs - wasn't planning on splashing the cash so quick. Just missing a good price for Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (currently @ £160) then I can start buying/building.

OCUK offer is for OEM and 12 months warranty only via OCUK. Boxed with 36 months warranty with amazing intel direct service is no brainer here when You realize OCUK are robbers when it comes to delivery prices.

Thanks for the advice. Hadn't voted as for the extra £9 I have the knowledge that this is from Amazon, a retailer I trust. I've not heard of Overclockers but that is probably down to the fact I've never built a machine before. May now look to bundle the purchase of parts between Amazon and eBuyer.
OP does have a point.......this is a beast of a CPU..... i thin it needs an X99 Mobo or dont it, anyone?

Need any Z370 mobo.
You can if you are adventurous and willing to sacrifice , get these working on z170/z270 Mobos But I think its fraught with danger . 4.7gbhz is reportedly possible.

I've made the cpu hot
It's only around £198 delivered from Amazon.de, and knowing Amazon it'll be dispatched from the UK anyhow.

ah yes the fictitious statement Bill Gates never said

The point is that this 6 core CPU might be great (I suspect it is) but it does not render all previous generations of CPU obsolete. A dual core from 2010 is still capable of basic tasks. And besides I don't need any more reasons to ditch perfectly good CPU's for the next best thing

I think you're misunderstanding the situation. Yep, 2c is enough for basic tasks. This chip doesn't change that fact. What this chip does change, however, is the value of comparably placed chips in the market. If you've a need for a performance part, why would you buy the part with only 2/3rds the power of its replacement?
Yes they are obsolete.

Is a mk1 ford fiesta obsolete? It might drive, it might keep you dry. But it IS obsolete.

EDIT: although lets face it Ryzen gave us 12 threads at this price 12months ago so said CPU's (kabylake back) have been courting the old obsolete for a long time

The modders were able to get a Core i3-8300 processor to boot in a couple of older boards, but not a Core i7-8700 chip. That is a higher core chip, of course—six cores instead of four—which seems to suggest that the power issue is related to driving higher core counts.

From your own article, they were able to get the lower core count CPUs working.

Even *saying* what you just said is ludicrous as someone may misunderstand what you are saying, *Heavy modifications, likely including soldering and highly skilled rewiring*.

All for what? 15 quid saving?

They have significantly lower single threaded performance, so not really.
This is HOtukdeals so I'm sure a little soldering and rewriting of BIOS should be no barrier to a hefty saving.
I recommend anyone buying intel cpu to hold off. Intel just announce a revision to their 8th gen CPU with the meltdown fix.
