be aware that this chip and the non K variant 7700 run HOT out of the box, thermal limit is about 100 DC, mine used to run around 40 idle but spike to 72 on opening a web page etc....eventually settling at 55! I got mine delidded ( Thermal Grizzly ) and got temps to 29-32 idle, never spiking above 65 with compact AIO liquid colling, not ideal but much better!
There does seem to be some variety in quality of the 7700k but having said that there's nothing wrong with those temps 40C at idle my i5 6600k heavily overclocked sits at about that but never goes over 70C even when absolutely thrashed on all cores.
Not sure who would buy an i7-7700k right now. Nobody in their right mind would switch to an obsolete platform, when Coffee Lake isn't that much more expensive and offers two more cores.

And surely people with Skylake/Kaby Lake motherboards aren't considering an upgrade so soon. I suppose someone with an i3 could increase the longevity of their system a little, but at £260 it's not a cheap upgrade.

I have a i5 6600 at the moment and I would love to move it to a decent 6th or 7th gen i7 but not at this price you are right.
