A 500GB USB 3.0 hard drive for less than £40. Bargain.

It can be delivered to store for next day collection for free.

I cannot find this particular product anywhere else so the product description is pretty bad but here you are:

Take files anywhere in style with the Intenso Portable External Hard Drive USB 3.0 with protection suite. It’s a perfect choice if you need constant access to your music, photos, files, and entire digital world. Sporting a sleek lightweight but durable enclosure, the Intenso is the perfect companion to your laptop or netbook computer.

With the robust software suite included, the Intenso is a user-friendly choice, regardless of whether you’re on a Mac or a PC. Intenso Backup Assistant is included to help you manage your backups, so there’s no need to worry about losing data.

And let’s not forget this baby’s USB 3.0 powered - powered directly from the USB port on your PC. No separate power supply is needed (although an optional cable may be required for the few computers that limit power from the USB port).

System requirements:
Latest version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7/Mac OS X 10.x
Minimum free disk space: 600MB recommended

There is also a 1TB Intenso drive at John Lewis for £64.95:

I have this drive. Paid the same price 12 months ago. Great deal considering the current sky-high cost of storage

£15 more delivered gets you a 7200rp sata 600 external 2TB external usb 3 drive though, as posted on here numerous times in the last week - double the size for £15 more is a far better deal and it comes with a 2 year warranty.

You cant compare USB external with USB powered portable, they are different products.

If it's a desktop drive then you cant compare it pricewise to a portable drive.
That's not portable, is it?
Just bought the 1TB version. Thanks rogerh!
Yes it's portable, I can plug it anywhere with a power socket. If you mean form factor and self-powered, who exactly needs to cart 1TB around with them every single day and if you did you'd just add a second drive to your laptop negating the need for any external drive that you then have to cart about in a laptop bag ?

Me. I have XBMC running off my 500 gig drive, with all my films and TV shows on it, and it goes wherever my laptop goes. Only, it's full to capacity and I keep having to delete things to make space. With this, I won't have to. And it's not a burden to carry around like a 3.5 inch drive would be, what with the plug and the power brick...

According to your logic, that makes every electrical item in my house portable becuase i can plug them anywhere with a power socket....

Exactly, i.e. they are not fixed in place, so portable.

I can't resist, I've watched so many people justify the difference, yet people still argue about it. It's a difference in form factor and power source, not portability.
New numpty on the scene?

I'm not even going to bother. There's no hope for you.
There are degrees of portability, though. Fridge-freezers and washing machines would also be technically portable but I wouldn't fancy lugging one of those around with me.

If you use a desktop, or if you never take your laptop out the house, ever, then a 3.5 inch drive is fine. But it's just not practical to take a 3.5 inch drive, plus power cable (including plug and brick) with you everywhere you go.
It is worth ringing your local store. Welwyn has four in stock, other stores may be the same.
Oh man... shame I missed out on this mega deal!!
Could i open the 1TB portable drive and use the hdd in my NAS?
1TB is only USB 2.0 not 3

It's not about justification. It's simply a definition that, in this case, indicates a difference between two devices - one is portable, one isn't. Whether that difference matters is for you to decide. Most people know what's meant by portable; you clearly don't.
Picked one up at the Welwyn store today. The guy in the store said that there were 2 left at the Welwyn branch.Thanks.
So a portable home and portaloo, by definition are portable, yet are subject to scale and form factor, but that's not what defines them
Bought today in Norwich shop. £39.95 for 500gb. Thanks to OP.
