God Is Not Great is the ultimate case against religion. In a
series of acute readings of the major religious texts, Christopher
Hitchens demonstrates the ways in which religion is man-made,
dangerously sexually repressive and distorts the very origins of the
cosmos. Above all, Hitchens argues that the concept of an omniscient
God has profoundly damaged humanity, and proposes that the world might
be a great deal better off without 'him'.

This is a deal?

Yes it is, hence me posting it. Are you familiar with the meaning of 'deal'? If not, read a dictionary and then read Mr. Hitchens' book for further enlightenment!

Yup, it's right there in the title:

"£1.29 Kindle Deal of the Day, was £6.17"

A shame that the only people who will read this already know religion is a crock of poop

Aren't you supposed to grow out of having imaginary friends before the age of 10?

Hitchens was a superb essayist, who during his lifetime travelled from the radical left to the right of the political spectrum. He moved from the UK to the US where he settled and later took up US citizenship. Anything he has written is always worthy of a read, whether you agree or disagree with his view of the world, there is enjoyment to be had from his mastery of the English language and the formidable presentation of his argument. At the price quoted it is a bargain. Shortly before he died he completed his autobiography which is also worth a read if only for the picture he paints of his contemporaries within the louche London left wing circles where he moved. Enjoy.

A shame that the only people who will read this already know religion is a crock of poop

Wonder how long before somebody posts a religious book as a deal to retaliate?

I'm not very popular in the church and not a good example but I believe God still wants to call me his and that been the case he's got to be the Greatest Dad I could ever want. it's difficult to say once you've felt that level of love that he's imaginary.

Remember he also created Harvey Weinstein in his image, and Big Prophet Mo was fond of young children.

As Hitchens said, Religion is simply an organised way for small number of people to control and abuse their many followers under the threat of a supernatural imaginary being.

Scientology worked in exactly the same way, but instead substituted Xenu - an imaginary space alien.

Strangely, the vast majority of people are happy to dismiss Scientology as a money-making scam (now finally proven) - yet don't seem to be able to apply the same logic to Christianity, Islam et al.

Excellent book and superbly written. A must read for anyone with an open mind.

Voted hot, great read. My favourite Hitchslap is the circumcision one with Rabbi Harold Kushner, well worth a watch on youtube.

The invasion of Iraq is a good idea, no I think I'll give anything by Hitchens a miss if that reflects his intellectual prowess.

A 'deal' with the devil offers favours which tend to include youth, knowledge, wealth, fame, and/or power. This 'deal' seems to offer one of the usual suspect indeed .. 'knowledge'.

A 'deal' it is then. And yet, we know so much already .. whether you believe in Hitchen for his knowledge/perspective or some prophet .. that's what it amounts to ... you are believing someone else or hitchhiking his/her brain.

Don't get me wrong, I entirely believe knowledge is an essential nutrition but we need to seek it and eat it. Once you've positioned a book as a tool against some religion or religion itself, then you are not seeking knowledge, you just needed it as a tool for an already biased opinion. Thus many comments here, are in contradiction of their own proclaimed (implicit or otherwise) ambition.

Voted hot, just because it fits the atmosphere.

Ah, you're invisible friend in the sky!

The one who really loves you, but not enough to not have you burn for all eternity if you dont do exactly as he says.

Prey to a carton of milk for the same effect - if you get what you want then the carton of milk answered your prayers. If you dont, then its the carton of milks will that you didnt get it.

Well theres a new one on me - looking for knowledge is a deal with the Devil!

You're absolutely right though - the last thing organised religion want is free thinking people gaining knowledge and perhaps even thinking for themselves....

I stopped reading Hitchens, Dawkins, etc as it was simply reiterating the conclusions i'd already drawn myself, so for me there was no need. However Hitchens spoke exceptionally well and it was always worth watching him debate.

He was a man with an opinion on various things - he didnt set himself up as a personal messiah or that you had to "follow him".

So just spend your entire life doing what you hope is enough otherwise you'll burn in hell for all eternity.

As Chomsky said, Hitchens was a victim of 'the god that failed syndrome' and as such he is worse than anyone on the right.

I'm really stuffed if it's about how good I've been but fortunately I'm sure it's not.

Try an Alpha Course it's a good place to air your ideas if you feel there's no God or if you feel God is not what you think he should be.

We've been brainwashed since birth into believing that god exists. It's so refreshing to hear from these people. Got doesn't have a leg to stand on.

I'm no fan of religion but he doesn't come across at all well in that debate. Very passive aggresive, rarely making eye contact, blustering a lot.

Hopefully for those who've taken up this deal, he's a better writer than orator.

Now that he's dead i'll bet that he believes in God now

Fantastic book. They should make it compulsory reading in schools. Might knock some sense into people

Being dead precludes believing in anything; even the non-existent.
