I've had Iomega external drives fail on me. Hours of expensive phone calls to Ireland later I finally got it swapped out, at great expense. This drive only has a year's warranty and given Iomega's track record I would be tempted to avoid.

On paper a great deal. Just don't trust Iomega (nor Trust).

We've used them in the office for years, with no bad effects. I personally own one of their soho nas drives, which is fine as a usb device, but crappy when it runs through the network.

They're certainly towards the cheaper end of the market, but this looks like a decent price for a simple device.

Does anyone know if iomega manufacture their own hdds or do they source from other suppliers?

Thanks, thekanester, my experience was one external duff CD-RW about 10 years ago. Put me off CD-RW for life!

I don't think Iomega has manufactured these since the introduction of the Prestige/eGo series.

I found some reviews of the Prestige successor to the Select which appears to use Seagate drives, although this is unofficial.

Great spot.
Had loads of Iomega's and all been fine.

If drives have a three year max warranty and these have been sitting in a warehouse since the 2008 introduction of the Prestige, odds are they don't have much life left in them.

You pays yer money. Actually the warranty looks quite good though a little ambiguous, I think you must register your purchase to receive three years.

Surely it would last just as long, or do they degrade whilst they are sat in the box?

yes but you can't read, go buy your massive drive...

No portable HD thread would be complete without someone posting a 3.5"

this was for yesteday only unfortunately, the price is now £32.99 still a good deal tho

I'm in the market for an external hard drive to back up music, pics, video's etc. Am I better with one of these drives or a 3.5 one?

I think you’ll find this is a better bargain:

Got iomega 500gb samsung inside & its been spot on!!

I bought a 40gb Iomega yes 40gb about 12 yrs ago with firewire ( before usb 2 was about) and it's still going strong. . .I bought the ego 500gb usb3 listed here for £29.99 a few weeks back

Mine's arrived.

Can't get inside it though. Also no sign in the literature of the three year warranty the tech support guy claimed I could get upon registering it.

Toshiba inside. Don't bother opening it, you _will_ break the shell.
